THE FIRST PHONE CALL FROM HEAVEN – Working in the "book cave", almost done with the latest draft - maybe 40 pages until the very end! Souls from heaven begin calling their living loved ones - but only in one tiny Michigan town. It raises all sorts of questions: real or hoax? Why this town? And what would you believe if you got one of these calls? Weaving the mystery and bringing it to its big conclusion is a load of fun, like keeping a secret that others really want to hear. If you want to get an early jump on The First Phone Call From Heaven, here's the link: http://mitchalbom.com/d/books/15802/first-phone-call-heaven

From the Detroit Free Press: Detroit mayor not exactly dream job

Detroit mayor not exactly dream job

You get to be in charge, except for the guy who is really in charge. You get to spend the money, but only if the other guy says OK. You get to state your platform, but you may never be able to implement one bit of it.

Why would anyone want to be mayor of Detroit?

Dave Bing, our current mayor, declined to seek a second term last week. When we spoke, the first question I asked was whether he opted out because an emergency manager now hovered over the city like one of those "War of the Worlds" spaceships.

He said no.

From the Detroit Free Press: Way back for Wings?First, get up the ice

Mitch Albom once again sees Detroit struggle in its own end

Way back for Wings?

First, get up the ice

It is never good, in the sports world, to be worried about your "own end," not in horse racing, not in sumo wrestling and certainly not in hockey.

But the Red Wings' own end is where trouble is brewing, and has been brewing, and it needs to be fixed if they want to keep going in this year's playoffs.

TUESDAY WITH BURT: Spent last night on stage with the great Burt Bacharach, talking about his new book and his life. So fascinating. He is the music of a generation. Knows everyone. Wrote everything from" Baby It's You" to "That's What Friends Are For." A riveting talk about creativity and devotion to art - as well as a story about Frank Sinatra offering to record an entire album of Burt's music, let Burt set up the orchestra, do all the arrangements, Burt says "Wow" and then, when Burt asks to be able to finish work on " Promises, Promises" show first, Sinatra says, "Forget it" and hangs up. The whole night was stories like that. I am proud to call him a friend. Thanks
