The Art of Sleeping Well: A Mom’s Liberation

Sleep, that elusive yet essential elixir of life. We all crave and need it, but we seldom get enough of it – especially if you’re a mom.

I adore what I do, but let’s face it, it can sometimes be an overwhelming, exhausting whirlwind. And when I finally collapse into bed, a swirl of thoughts often keeps me tossing and turning, making it nearly impossible to fall or stay asleep.

I’ve experimented with countless sleep-enhancing strategies – no caffeine, a set bedtime, soothing melodies, etc. Yet, these remedies rarely work consistently. I’ve questioned myself, my mattress, and whether something’s amiss.

But then it dawned on me. The real problem isn’t me or my bed; the unrealistic expectations and societal standards imposed upon us. We’re told that quality sleep equates to eight hours in a dark, silent room, on a perfect mattress, in a specific posture that aligns our spine and neck.

But who decided this is the only path to a good night’s sleep? Why must we adhere to rules that might not align with our unique needs and preferences? And why do we carry guilt or shame if we dare to stray?

I chose to break free from these norms and listen to my body and intuition. I realized that the ideal sleeping position for me is any position that grants me five hours of precious rest, whether on my back, side, stomach, or curled up like a fetus. Whether on the couch, floor or even in the car. With a pillow, blanket, or nothing at all.

The particulars don’t matter as long as I can enjoy rejuvenating rest and wake up refreshed. I no longer concern myself with others’ opinions or judgments. I ignore the hashtags and trends. I focus on myself and my well-being.

And you know what? It works. Since I embraced this perspective, I’ve been sleeping better, feeling happier, and embracing life with newfound energy and creativity. I’m more patient and compassionate with my son and clients. I’ve found greater confidence and joy in living my life.

I encourage you to try this approach if you’re wrestling with sleep issues like mine. Let go of the rules and the pressure. Discover your unique path to a restful night. Be your own #SleepingBeauty. Embrace your #MomLife. And savour those precious #Zzzs.

You deserve it.

Balancing the Tightrope of Self-Centeredness and Narcissism: A Humorous Journey

Hey there, lovely readers! 🌟 I hope your day is as fantastic as you are. Today, I want to dive into the intriguing world of self-centeredness and narcissism, but hold onto your hats because we’re spicing it up with a dash of humour and a pinch of sarcasm!

So, what’s the deal with self-centred folks and narcissists? Some smarty-pants experts claim that self-centred people are about their interests and needs. Meanwhile, narcissists strut around with an inflated sense of importance and superiority. Sounds like they’re cut from the same cloth, right? But trust me, there’s a subtle difference I’ve picked up on through personal and professional experiences.

Self-centred folks think they’re pretty awesome but not entirely delusional. Sure, they have a high opinion of themselves. However, they still have doubts and insecurities about their abilities and achievements. They may boast, but they crave validation and approval from the peanut gallery. They can be a tad selfish, but they care about their loved ones (well, to some extent).

Narcissists, on the other hand, have no time for doubt or insecurity. They are utterly convinced that they’re the crème de la crème, no questions asked. They don’t brag; they state facts. Validation and approval? Nah, they demand admiration and unwavering obedience. Everyone else? They’re simply pawns to be manipulated and exploited to meet their desires.

But wait, you may wonder, how can you tell who? Here are some telltale signs:

🔹 Self-centered people might mumble an apology if they fear the consequences, but narcissists? They don’t apologize because they never make mistakes (in their world).

🔹 Constructive criticism? Self-centred folks might take it if they think it benefits them, but narcissists? They’re perfect, remember? They’re not into feedback.

🔹 Empathy? Self-centred individuals might feel it for some, but narcissists? Nope, they’re too busy being superior.

🔹 Friends? Self-centred folks might have a few, but narcissists? They collect admirers and minions, not friends.

Before slapping labels on everyone you know, here’s a reality check: We all have a touch of self-centeredness and narcissism. It’s part of being human. We all want to feel good about ourselves; there’s nothing wrong with that. The key is finding a healthy balance.

But when self-centeredness or narcissism goes into overdrive, it can be a problem for us and those around us. It can blind us to reality, make us insensitive to others’ needs, and leave us unsatisfied.

So, how do we strike that balance? Here are some tips from my own journey:

1. Self-awareness: Embrace your strengths, weaknesses, and everything else.

2. Gratitude: Recognize what you’ve received and share it with others.

3. Respect: Accept diversity and respect other perspectives.

4. Realism: Set ambitious goals but adapt to reality.

5. Communication: Be confident yet humble in your interactions.

These are the ways I try to balance self-centeredness and narcissism with humility and altruism. I don’t always nail it, but I keep trying. And I hope you do, too, because, in the end, we’re all a mix of the best and the worst.

ADHD Diagnosis Challenges in India: A Call for Culturally Relevant Approaches

About 5% of children and teenagers worldwide have ADHD, a brain disorder that makes it hard for them to act and learn like others. It impairs the ability to focus, maintain self-control, and sit still, often involving academic, social, and home life. This post delves into the complexities of diagnosing ADHD in the Indian context, highlighting the limitations of current diagnostic criteria and proposing culturally sensitive alternatives.

Why the Current Diagnostic Criteria Fall Short

The diagnosis of ADHD relies on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), primarily developed based on research conducted in Western countries. These criteria may not adequately apply to Indian children due to significant cultural, educational, and environmental differences. Several vital reasons underpin the flaws in the current diagnostic criteria:

Educational Disparities : The DSM-5 and ICD-11 require symptoms to manifest in at least two settings, often home and school. However, in India, issues like limited access to formal education, large class sizes, poor infrastructure, and insufficient teacher training can hinder educators’ accurate symptom observation and reporting. Lack of Objective Measures : To meet these criteria, the symptoms must cause severe problems in how they get along with others, do in school, or work. Unfortunately, standardized, objective assessment tools to gauge this impact might be lacking in the Indian context, compounded by low awareness, stigma, and resource limitations. Categorical vs. Dimensional Approach : The current criteria adopt a categorical approach, assuming ADHD is a distinct disorder with clear boundaries. Recent research indicates that ADHD exists on a continuum of severity and comorbidity, potentially causing underdiagnosis in children with milder symptoms or comorbid conditions like anxiety, depression, or learning disabilities. Western-Centric Model : The Western-centric model of child development and behaviour underpinning these criteria does not adequately capture the diversity and complexity of the Indian context. Behaviours indicative of ADHD in the West may be deemed normal or culturally acceptable in India, and vice versa.Exploring Alternatives

Given these limitations, it is imperative to develop culturally sensitive and context-specific tools for ADHD diagnosis and management in Indian children. Some viable alternatives include:

Locally Developed Rating Scales : Utilize locally developed or adapted rating scales that account for the nuanced variations of ADHD symptoms and impairment in Indian children, such as the INCLEN Diagnostic Tool for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (INDT-ADHD). Dimensional Approach : Shift towards a dimensional approach that considers the frequency, intensity, duration, and impact of ADHD symptoms across different domains and settings. Comprehensive Assessment : Implement a complete assessment process that includes detailed history taking, mental state examination, physical examination, neuropsychological testing, and screening for other related disorders, ensuring a holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment. Collaborative Approach : Encourage a collaborative approach involving the child, parents, teachers, and other professionals in diagnosing and managing ADHD, fostering consistent and coordinated support across various settings.

ADHD is a significant concern among Indian children, yet the existing diagnostic criteria may not be suitable for this population. Developing culturally sensitive and context-specific assessment tools is crucial to enhance the identification and treatment of ADHD, ultimately improving the quality of life for affected children and their families. Culturally relevant approaches are the key to addressing the unique challenges presented by ADHD in India.

Unearthing Purpose: A Review of ‘Find Your Passion: 25 Questions You Must Ask Yourself’ by Henri Junttila

In a world filled with countless self-help books promising to unlock the secrets of a fulfilling life, “Find Your Passion: 25 Questions You Must Ask Yourself” by Henri Junttila stands out as a practical and invaluable guide for those on the journey to discover their true purpose. With a thoughtful and systematic approach, the author shares 25 thought-provoking questions to help you explore your interests, values, strengths, and goals. Moreover, Junttila offers expert advice on overcoming obstacles like fear, self-doubt, and ever-elusive time constraints.

One of the book’s standout features is its accessibility. Henri Junttila’s writing style is clear and conversational, making it an easy read for anyone. Regardless of whether you prefer jotting down your answers with a pen on paper or typing them out on a computer, this book accommodates your chosen method. The emphasis here is encouraging you to be honest and reflective, taking deliberate steps toward your passion daily.

Personally, I found this book incredibly helpful and inspiring. It provoked introspection, compelling me to consider what ignites my passion and drives my purpose. While some questions were familiar, others were refreshingly new and provided a healthy challenge. In case you find yourself stuck, Junttila’s thoughtful inclusion of various prompts for each question is a testament to his dedication to your success. Moreover, including real-life examples and stories, both from his own experiences and those of individuals who have successfully found their passion, lends the book an enriching and relatable quality.

The book might not be lengthy, but its design is intentional. It is meant to be savoured, not devoured in one sitting. The optimal approach is to dedicate time to answer one question each day or as frequently as you can manage. This deliberate pace allows you to dive deep into your thoughts and feelings, giving you the space to let the ideas simmer and grow. It’s important to note that “Find Your Passion” is not a quick fix or a magic formula to unveil your passion instantaneously. Instead, it is a powerful tool to aid in self-discovery.

While this book shines in many aspects, it could be further enriched by incorporating more stories and examples from diverse fields and backgrounds. This expansion would vividly illustrate the multifaceted nature of passion and how it can manifest in various forms. The book could have also delved into practical advice on navigating the real-life challenges of pursuing one’s power, including financial considerations, time management, and building a support system.

In summary, “Find Your Passion: 25 Questions You Must Ask Yourself” by Henri Junttila is a valuable resource for anyone seeking a more meaningful and purposeful life. It guides you in asking the right questions and offers a helping hand on your journey to uncover your passion and turn it into a reality. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to those in stagnation, boredom, or unhappiness, as it can catalyse transformative change. While I rate it at 4 stars, it has the potential to reach greater heights with the addition of more diverse examples and practical guidance for overcoming the challenges of pursuing one’s passion.

Simplifying Transitions for Children with ADHD: Practical Tips and Helpful Products

Do you have a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who struggles with changing from one activity to another? Do you often face frustration, anxiety, tantrums, or meltdowns when it’s time to switch gears? If so, you are not alone. Many kids with ADHD find transitions difficult and stressful, whether moving from breakfast to lunch, lunch to brushing teeth or brushing teeth to bedtime.

But don’t worry; there are effective methods to make transitions smoother for kids with ADHD and less stressful for both children and parents. You will learn some practical tips and products in this blog post that can aid you and your child cope with transitions and make them more comfortable and enjoyable.

Understanding the Challenge: Why Transitions Are Tough for Kids with ADHD

Children with ADHD often face difficulties in executive functions, encompassing skills such as planning, organizing, focusing, remembering, and impulse control. These skills are vital for switching from one task or situation to another. They enable us to anticipate what comes next, adapt our behaviour, and handle changes or challenges.

However, children with ADHD may have these skills underdeveloped or struggle to utilize them effectively. As a result, they may:

Find it hard to stop one activity and start anotherEncounter challenges in following instructions and routinesQuickly become distracted or bored with the current activityFeel overwhelmed or anxious about the impending changeExhibit resistance or rebellion when transitions are requiredExperience emotional outbursts or meltdowns

These behaviours can disrupt daily routines, create stress, lead to conflicts, and affect a child’s self-esteem and academic performance.

Practical Strategies and Products for Smoother Transitions

The good news is that several strategies and products can assist children with ADHD in improving their executive functions and making transitions easier. Here are some of them:

Timers and Visual Cues

Timers and visual cues can help children with ADHD manage time and understand when to transition to the next activity. Options include kitchen timers, smartphone apps, or devices like the Time Timer. The Time Timer is a highly recommended product that provides a visual representation of time through a disappearing red disk, and it can sound an alert when time is up. It’s useful for various transition activities, such as homework, playtime, bedtime, or chores.

Advance Warnings

It’s essential to provide advance warnings before transitioning to a new activity. Phrases like “Five more minutes until lunch” or “Two more songs until bedtime” help children mentally and emotionally prepare for the change and reduce resistance. You can also use sensory toys like the LIVOND Liquid Motion Bubbler Sensory Timer as a visual cue to signal that it’s time to switch activities.

Rewards and Incentives

Positive reinforcement and motivation work effectively for children with ADHD. You can use rewards and incentives to encourage cooperation during transitions, such as allowing them to pick their favourite cereal at the supermarket, offering extra screen time, or praising good behaviour. Ensure the rewards are immediate, consistent, and meaningful to your child.

Structured Transition Time

Sometimes, children with ADHD benefit from a brief buffer time between activities to calm down and adjust. You can structure the transition time by having a quick snack, playing a short game, reading a book, or practising breathing exercises with your child. This can make transitions smoother and help prevent meltdowns.

Consistent Routine

A predictable and consistent routine can provide children with ADHD with a sense of security and control. Maintain the same order of daily activities, such as waking up, getting dressed, eating breakfast, going to school, doing homework, having dinner, taking a bath, and going to bed. Additionally, you can incorporate the “Thriving with ADHD Workbook for Kids” into their daily routine. This workbook contains 60 engaging activities that help children improve their self-control, concentration, and confidence, aiding in developing healthy habits and transition skills.

In Conclusion

Transitions can pose difficulties for children with ADHD, but they can overcome them. By implementing these tips and considering the recommended products, you can support your child in dealing with changes and make transitions more manageable for both of you.

Emotional Tapestry Unraveled: A Review of ‘Spilled It Again’ by Tanvi Agarwal

“Spilled It Again: A Collection of 100 Verses to Stir Your Emotions” by Tanvi Agarwal is a literary masterpiece that profoundly touches the depths of your heart and soul. This book takes you on an emotional journey through 100 verses, each a poignant exploration of love, pain, hope, and the enigmatic path of self-discovery.

Tanvi Agarwal, the brilliant author behind these verses, has infused her emotions and experiences into every word. With brevity, she designs powerful poems that resonate with the reader’s life journey. Her poetic expressions are a testament to her ability to encapsulate the essence of various emotions and situations, inviting the reader to experience a profound connection.

Reading “Spilled It Again” was an emotional rollercoaster. The poems evoked smiles, tears, contemplation, and inspiration. Agarwal’s mastery lies in her skilful use of rhyme and metaphor, which infuse the verses with a musical and lyrical quality, making the reading experience genuinely captivating.

Several poems stood out, but some that left an indelible mark include:

“Why Is She To Be Blamed?”“Are All Questions Made For Girls Only?”“A Liar”“Emotions: The Feelings of Unconscious Mind”

These verses resonated personally and prompted deep reflection on life’s intricate tapestry and societal norms, particularly those affecting women.

While the book is a treasure trove of emotions, some poems have room for improvement in clarity and coherence. Occasionally, the connection between lines or the meaning of certain words seemed obscure. A more straightforward and expressive language could have enhanced the clarity of the message, as some poems felt incomplete or abrupt.

In conclusion, “Spilled It Again” is an exquisite collection of poems that will ignite your emotions and enrich your appreciation for life. It’s a literary gem that must be revisited repeatedly, with each reading revealing new layers of insight. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all poetry enthusiasts and those yearning to explore the depths of their feelings through the power of words.

Empowering Your Teen for College Success: A Research-Informed Guide for Parents

Are you a parent of a teen who wants to go to college? If so, you might wonder how to help them prepare for this big step in their life. College is a challenging academic environment and a new social and emotional one. Your teen must develop various skills and abilities to succeed in college and beyond.

But don’t worry. You are not alone in this journey. Some research-based tips and strategies can help you and your teen prepare for college. In this guide, I will cover:

Why you should start preparing your teen for college earlyHow to find guidance and support for your teen’s college goalsHow to plan and prepare for the college admission processHow to be flexible and realistic about your teen’s college options and outcomes

Let’s get started!

Start Preparing Your Teen for College Early

According to Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child, teens must develop core executive function skills that help them navigate life’s inevitable challenges. These skills include planning, focus, self-control, awareness, and flexibility. These skills are essential for college success, enabling students to manage their time, cope with stress, interact with others, and adapt to changing situations.

However, these skills do not sprout overnight. Teens must practice them throughout their high school years and even earlier. Parents can help by setting ground rules, such as homework completion, sleep schedule, and regular exercise. They can also let teens make some of their own decisions and learn from their mistakes. This way, teens can gradually gain independence and confidence.

Find Guidance and Support for Your Teen’s College Goals

College preparation is not something that teens can do alone. They need guidance from various sources, such as teachers, counsellors, mentors, and peers. These people can provide teens valuable information, advice, and support as they explore their interests, goals, and options.

Parents can also play a supportive role by encouraging their teens to seek guidance from others. They can help them find reliable sources of information, such as websites, books, or guides. They can also help them connect with people who have relevant experience or expertise, such as alumni, professionals, or tutors. Parents should avoid being too pushy or controlling but respect their teens’ choices and opinions.

Plan and Prepare for the College Admission Process

College admission is a competitive and complex process. It involves various factors, such as entrance exams, academic performance, extracurricular activities, and personal statements. Teens need to plan and prepare well for each aspect of the process.

Parents can help by being involved and informed about the college admission process. They can help their teens research colleges and programs that suit their interests and abilities. They can also help them prepare for entrance exams by providing study materials or enrolling them in coaching classes. They can also help them with their applications by reviewing their essays or letters of recommendation.

Be Flexible and Realistic about Your Teen’s College Options and Outcomes

College is not a one-size-fits-all experience. It can vary depending on the type of college, program, location, culture, and environment. Teens need to be flexible and open-minded about their college options and expectations. They need to realize that there is no perfect college or program for everyone and that they may face some challenges or difficulties.

A supportive and realistic attitude from parents can help their teens make informed decisions about their college options and outcomes. They can assist them in evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of different choices. They can also help them cope with any setbacks or disappointments during the process. They can also celebrate their achievements and successes along the way.

Conclusion

College preparation is a journey that involves both teens and parents. It requires academic skills and life skills essential for college success and beyond. By following these research-based tips, teens and parents can make this journey more enjoyable and rewarding.

I hope you found this helpful. If you have any questions or feedback, please let me know. 😊
