The Irony of Seeking Solace in Community

In the hustle and bustle of my life, I sought refuge in a community, craving connection, understanding, and a respite from the chaos. However, my anticipation for solace met an unexpected reality.

Within this community, I encountered a reflection of my own frenetic existence. Instead of a haven, it was a congregation of individuals mirroring my struggles, echoing the same grievances about their overwhelming lives. Venting became the norm, a cycle of complaints perpetuating stress, leaving me more fatigued and disheartened than before.

The irony struck me hard. My pursuit of relaxation led me to a space that amplified my tension. I sought amusement but found myself drifting further into boredom.

This experience was a powerful lesson: a community isn’t a panacea for life’s trials. It’s not a repository where one can deposit woes, expecting them to vanish magically. It’s not an escape from reality, a place to feign normalcy amidst chaos.

Expressing ourselves can be challenging at times. We often resort to phrases that don’t entirely convey our genuine emotions or intentions. Here are some common words and what they might actually mean:

“I’m fine”

This phrase is perhaps the most frequent disguise for deeper emotions. When I say, “I’m fine,” what I might actually mean is, “I’m overwhelmed.” My mind juggles numerous concerns—from family responsibilities and work deadlines to health worries and financial stress. I’m not okay; I’m stressed, anxious, and exhausted. But admitting this vulnerability or seeking help feels daunting. So, I smile and say, “I’m fine,” hoping no one sees through the facade.

When Conscientiousness Becomes a Burden: My Journey to Balance

Conscientiousness, among the Big Five personality traits, embodies organization, diligence, and ambition. On the surface, it seems like a virtuous attribute, but as I’ve discovered, it has a dark side that, if left unchecked, can lead to a life of discontentment and stress.

As someone inherently conscientious, I strive for excellence in every facet of life, whether writing, studying, parenting, or maintaining a tidy household. Holding myself and others to high standards, I find it challenging to leave tasks incomplete or environments messy. My work ethic is driven by a sense of pride, grounded in values of responsibility and dependability.

However, the shadow cast by conscientiousness is daunting. It can fuel tendencies toward perfectionism, procrastination, and overwhelming stress, shrouding one’s life in dissatisfaction and unhappiness. It can potentially hinder enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures and strain interpersonal connections, posing risks to overall well-being.

Let me share how this trait has adversely affected my life:

Unfinished manuscripts clutter my laptop, abandoned due to incessant self-criticism and fear of rejection. The pursuit of flawlessness led me to delay completion, causing these projects to linger in perpetual limbo.Despite despising clutter, my home remains untidy. The desire for a pristine space clashes with the perpetual lack of time and energy devoted to more pressing commitments. Striving for perfection leads to last-minute rushes, resulting in errors and missed deadlines. This self-imposed pressure only ends in disappointment for myself and those I aim to impress.Juggling multiple roles, particularly that of a devoted parent, leaves me little time for personal pursuits. While I yearn to provide unwavering support for my child, this devotion inadvertently fosters dependency and sacrifices my own aspirations.

For instance, I frequently struggle when my 6-year-old son pleads for an extra cookie after dinner. He’s well aware of the “one cookie per day” rule, and his knack for using puppy eyes and a sweet voice makes it hard to say no. His plea, “Please, Mommy, just one more. I promise I’ll be good. I love you so much,” often melts my resolve. How can I resist?

However, I’ve learned that resistance is not only possible but necessary. Giving in breaks my rule and teaches my son that boundaries are negotiable, obtained through charm rather than respecting limits, and undermines my authority. These are lessons I don’t want him to internalize.

So, how can we uphold boundaries without guilt or feeling unkind? Here are effective strategies that have assisted me:

Balancing Motherhood and Health: My Unconventional Approach

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle as a mom is crucial. It’s the cornerstone of our overall well-being, influencing our mood, energy levels, productivity, and happiness. Yet, how do we achieve this while navigating the demands of caring for our little ones? I’ll share a secret: I don’t follow the conventional route.

Let me clarify: my love for my son knows no bounds; he’s my greatest joy. However, he’s also my most demanding, tiring, and unpredictable challenge. He’s the reason for my elation and sometimes my sleepless nights.

So, how do I keep myself healthy amidst this chaos? I adapt. I embrace spontaneity. I find health in unconventional ways. I indulge in the remnants of his meals—often rice, lentils, veggies, and chicken. I exercise by engaging in playful activities: chasing him around the house, playing tag or hide-and-seek, and grooving to his favourite tunes. Sleep? It’s caught whenever he grants me the chance, usually resulting in an inconsistent eight hours a night, albeit with sporadic interruptions.

Is this the textbook method for wellness? Probably not. But it’s my way, and it sustains me. It fuels my happiness. Amidst the whirlwind of parenting, I scarcely have time to fuss over calories, workout routines, or sleep patterns. Instead, I have time to revel in my son’s unique personality. I have time to share laughter, hugs, and kisses. I have time to simply be his mom.

And you know what? That, to me, is the epitome of staying healthy.

However, recognizing the need for an occasional boost in maintaining my health and fitness goals, I’ve discovered some invaluable products that have made a difference in my routine. Here are a few:
