Navigating the Mom’s Dilemma: Intuition vs. Overthinking
Have you ever been caught in the intricate web of distinguishing between intuition and overthinking? As a mom, this internal struggle is something I’m sure many of us can relate to all too well. It’s like having a sixth sense one moment and feeling like you’re drowning in worries the next.
Intuition is the compass within us that guides us without conscious thought. That gut feeling prompts you to trust a person, avoid a situation, or make quick decisions. This innate sense can be a lifesaver when time is short and information is scarce, helping us navigate twists and turns.
On the flip side, overthinking is the art of pondering something excessively or for an unnecessarily extended period. That nagging voice fuels self-doubt, causes you to second-guess your choices and conjures up worst-case scenarios. Overthinking can paralyze us, preventing us from taking action and thoroughly enjoying the present moment.
So, how can you discern whether it’s your intuition or overthinking at play? Here are a few insights I’ve gathered from my own experiences:
Emotional Barometer: Pay attention to your emotions. Intuition often brings a sense of calm, confidence, or clarity, whereas overthinking often ushers in anxiety, fear, or confusion.Body Signals: Listen to your body. As a mother, my deepest desire is to make my son happy and let him feel my boundless love for him. For a long time, I believed his love language was centred around gifts. He frequently requested toys and candy, and I interpreted his joy as a result of these material possessions. It seemed a straightforward equation – buying him what he wanted to be equated to expressing my love and making him feel cherished.
However, life teaches us valuable lessons, and I was in for a revelation. I realized that his actual love language was quality time, and the toys and candy were merely a means to an end. He craved those items to engage with me, to share his laughter and happiness. The toys and sweets were not the ends in themselves but the vehicles that allowed us to bond.
It wasn’t the objects but the moments we spent together that held the most meaning to him. He wanted me to be part of his games, listen to his stories with rapt attention, and share laughter and heartfelt hugs. He longed for my presence, undivided attention, and the reassurance that I was genuinely interested in him and his world.
This realization prompted a change in my approach. I invested in our relationship by creating precious memories and saving money simultaneously. Instead of focusing on buying things, I started participating in activities he enjoyed. How to Find Balance in the Sleep Struggle: Insights from a Mom
Sleep – it’s a cornerstone of our health and overall well-being. It influences our mood, energy levels, productivity, and immune system. Experts recommend a solid seven to nine hours of sleep for optimum health. Sounds ideal, right? Well, for us moms, the reality can be quite different.
Between juggling work, household chores, and the never-ending needs of my son, finding time for a good night’s sleep can seem like an elusive dream. Even when I do carve out a little ‘me-time,’ my son often has different ideas in mind.
I’ve got a bedtime routine that’s meant to be my ticket to serenity – reading, meditating, and cuddling with my son. In theory, it’s a lovely picture. In practice? Not always. My son occasionally transforms into the ‘bedtime bungee jumper’ or becomes the ‘inquisitive question machine.’ Or the classic: ‘I’m not tired, I’m just famished and want to chat.’ He’s so charmingly persuasive that I often cave in.
But what’s the cost? It means sacrificing precious sleep, leading to groggy days ahead. It’s a dilemma – balancing my need for rest and my desire to savour these fleeting moments of his childhood.
I don’t claim to have all the answers, but here are a few tips I’ve found helpful:
Establish Consistent Bedtimes: Setting regular sleep schedules for you and your child can help regulate your internal clocks, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up.Watch Your Diet: Caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine can keep you awake and affect how well you sleep, so you should avoid them near bedtime.Create a Sleep-Inducing Space: Make your bedroom a haven for sleep – think dark, quiet, calm, and cosy. Once upon a time, a young boy named Raj found himself in quite a pickle. It was the day of the big math test, and Raj was as nervous as a squirrel in a thunderstorm. He had hit the books enthusiastically but still had butterflies dancing in his tummy. His goal? To impress his teacher, the wise Ms Gupta sprinkled praise like confetti. He also had a rival, Ravi, who had a knack for poking fun at him for being a “math whiz.”
Raj reached school ahead of the roosters and sat right at the front, just like a superhero ready for action. He rummaged through his backpack, ensuring he had all his gear: a calculator, a ruler, an eraser, and a pencil. This was no ordinary pencil; it was bright yellow with a goofy smiley face on top, Raj’s lucky charm. Nobody dared touch it. He affectionately called it his “Happy Pencil.”
He felt an explosion of self-confidence as he placed the Happy Pencil on his desk next to the calculator. It was go-time!
Surveying the battlefield (a.k.a the classroom), Raj spotted his nemesis, Ravi, sitting right behind him, grinning like a Cheshire cat and whispering to his sidekicks. Raj rolled his eyes and focused on his trusty Happy Pencil.
The bell chimed, announcing Ms. Gupta’s grand entrance. She greeted the class with a warm smile and distributed the dreaded test papers. She reminded everyone to write their names and wield pencils, not mischief.
Raj jotted down his name and flipped the paper, excited to tackle the first question. Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy! He reached for his Happy Pencil, ready to unleash its magic.
But as his hand moved, he felt a sly tug on his pencil. Startled, he turned to find Ravi holding the other end, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Hey, give that back!” Raj protested.
“No way, it’s mine now!” Ravi retorted.
“It’s not yours, it’s mine! It’s my Happy Pencil!”

They pulled harder on the pencil, not realizing that it was on the brink of disaster. It started to bend and crack like a twig in a storm.
Overhearing the commotion, Ms. Gupta stormed to the battleground, frowning like a grumpy owl. She saw the tug-of-war over the pencil and was not pleased.
“Raj, Ravi, what on Earth is going on?” she demanded.
Caught red-handed, they released their grip on the pencil and looked at her with frightened deer-in-the-headlights eyes. Her face looked like a thundercloud, and it was raining punishment.
“We’re really, really, really sorry, Ms. Gupta,” they chorused.
“Sorry? That’s not enough. You’re causing a ruckus, wasting everyone’s time, and breaking the rules. Only pencils are allowed for the test; you should never share them. It’s cheating!”
She reached for the pencil, intending to take it away. But as she did, it snapped in two, sending pieces zooming in opposite directions. The smiley face cap rolled away and hid beneath a desk.
The class gasped in disbelief, their eyes locked on the shattered pencil. Raj and Ravi stared at the wreckage, a twinge of regret gnawing at them.
Ms. Gupta’s stern voice broke the silence, “That’s it! You’ve done it now. You’ve ruined your test and your precious pencil. You’ve also disrupted the test for everyone else. You both get a big, fat zero, and I’m escorting you to the principal’s office. Immediately.”
She snatched their test papers, tossed them into the bin, and then led them out of the classroom, leaving the rest of the class stunned.
Raj and Ravi walked with heads hung low, regret gnawing at them. They wished they hadn’t squabbled over the pencil and had been better friends. They hoped for a time machine, and most of all, they wanted their Happy Pencil to be whole again.
