Visualization is a powerful technique touted for its ability to unlock potential and steer us toward our aspirations. Yet, as a mother, I’ve learned firsthand that sometimes, it doesn’t always unfold as expected. Allow me to share a lighthearted yet enlightening anecdote from my parenting journey.

One particularly overwhelming day, the demands of work, chores, and my son’s homework converged into a whirlwind of stress. My 6-year-old despised his writing assignments, opting instead for video games or doodling—a struggle that consistently tested my patience. Seeking respite, I turned to visualization, hoping to conjure a calmer scenario.

With closed eyes, I envisioned my son, serenely engaged at his desk, effortlessly completing his homework. I pictured him confidently tracing lines on his worksheets, fostering a sense of relief and joy within me, anticipating his progress.

Upon opening my eyes, brimming with optimism, reality diverged hilariously from my expectations.

Expecting diligent homework, I found my son proudly displaying an intricately detailed drawing that covered his entire worksheet. His vibrant sketch depicted a lifelike, beaming face with unexpected fierceness. He exclaimed, “Look, Mom, I made a drawing!”

Stunned, I stood at a crossroads between laughter and exasperation. My attempt at visualization had inadvertently unleashed his boundless creativity. Rather than motivating homework, it had inspired an artistic outburst, transforming his worksheet into a canvas for self-expression.

At that moment, I chose laughter. Recognizing his artistic fervour and youthful spirit, I reframed the situation. He was a child, brimming with a passion for drawing that might one day burgeon into something extraordinary. Perhaps, I mused, his penchant for artistry would merge harmoniously with writing in the future.

I embraced him, praising his artwork while gently reinforcing the importance of homework. I explained the value of writing offering to make the task enjoyable. He agreed to tackle his homework—post-drawing—requesting to preserve his creation on our wall. I obliged, delighted to witness his joy.

This incident taught me a vital lesson: while visualization holds promise, its outcomes can unpredictably diverge. Embracing these unexpected, sometimes comical consequences empowers us to navigate and cherish such moments.

Attempting to conquer everything simultaneously only leads to overwhelm. Break down your tasks into smaller, manageable fragments. Prioritize what’s crucial and urgent, and delegate or postpone the rest. Commend yourself for every milestone, irrespective of its size.

As a parent, I’m constantly intrigued by the inner workings of my son’s mind. His thoughts about the world, dreams, fears, and friendships often remain a mystery. There are moments I find myself yearning for a crystal ball to unveil his thoughts. Yet, I’ve realized that intuition, a force within us, surpasses any mystical device.

Intuition serves as the voice of my heart, the wisdom of my soul, and the culmination of my life experiences. It’s the innate ability to perceive without conscious reasoning. This instinct guides me in discerning right from wrong, safety from peril, and truth from falsehood.

And sometimes, it alerts me when he’s concealing something under his pillow.

The other day, I noticed a shift in his demeanour—avoiding eye contact, fidgeting nervously, and rushing to his room. He withdrew from conversation and play, exuding an air of unease and guilt.

Trusting my intuition, I discovered his cherished toy car broken into pieces. He had accidentally damaged it despite my warnings against rough play.

At that moment, my response wasn’t rooted in anger but disappointment. I aimed to engage him in a conversation, emphasizing the values of honesty, responsibility, and trust. I needed to convey unconditional love and care while imparting essential life lessons.
