Millions of people worldwide have ADHD, which is often misunderstood and misjudged. It is not a sign of laziness, stupidity, or moral failure. It is a brain-based disorder that causes attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity difficulties. In this article, I will debunk some of the myths that surround ADHD and share some facts that can help you understand it better.

Myth #1: ADHD is caused by bad parenting.

Fact: ADHD has nothing to do with how you raise your child. It is a genetic and neurological condition that runs in families. Studies show that about 25% of people with ADHD have a parent with ADHD. Brain scans also reveal differences in brain structure and function between people with and without ADHD. Parents do not cause or cure ADHD, but they can help their children cope by providing design, support, and guidance.

Myth #2: ADHD is caused by sugar or artificial additives.

Fact: Sugar or artificial additives do not cause or make ADHD symptoms worse, according to science. However, some children may become more hyperactive after consuming certain food additives, as some studies have shown. Still, the results are not consistent or conclusive. Children with or without ADHD are not affected by sugar in their behaviour or cognitive performance. Eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats can make everyone healthier and happier, especially those with ADHD.

Myth #3: ADHD is caused by video games or too much screen time.

Fact: Playing video games or watching TV does not cause ADHD or make it worse. In fact, some research has indicated that video games may positively affect attention, working memory, and executive functions in children with ADHD. However, spending too much time on screens can have negative consequences for anyone, such as disrupting sleep, reducing physical activity, and affecting social skills. Therefore, setting reasonable limits and monitoring the quality and content of the media you or your child consume is essential.

Myth #4: ADHD is overdiagnosed.

Fact: ADHD is not overdiagnosed; it is underdiagnosed and undertreated. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that 63.2 out of 1,000 Indian children surveyed had ADHD, more than the global average of 56 out of 1,000 children. However, many children with ADHD remain undiagnosed and untreated due to a lack of awareness, stigma, cultural barriers, and limited access to mental health services. This can result in low grades, trouble with behaviour, poor self-confidence, and a higher chance of having other problems like anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and delinquency. Therefore, it is crucial to increase the awareness and availability of effective diagnosis and treatment options for children with ADHD.

How Jimmy Spiced Up His Lesson on Respect

Once upon a time, in a lively school, a mischievous boy named Jimmy had a knack for playing pranks, leaving his classmates and teachers in splits of laughter or red-faced with embarrassment. But one fateful day, he embarked on a culinary escapade that would go down in history as “The Day Jimmy Ate His Teacher’s Lunch.”

Now, Mr. Brown, Jimmy’s teacher, had a reputation for bringing the most scrumptious lunch to school. It usually consisted of a mouthwatering sandwich, a juicy apple, and a delectable chocolate bar. To Jimmy, the prospect of devouring this feast of flavours was too tantalizing to resist. And so, with his mischievous grin firmly in place, he hatched a plan to swipe Mr. Brown’s lunch.

Jimmy pretended to head outside with his friends when the bell rang for recess. However, he doubled back into the classroom in a twinkling, ensuring no soul was in sight. Like a culinary ninja, he tiptoed to Mr. Brown’s desk and unveiled the treasure chest – a lunch bag emblazoned with the teacher’s name.

As he unzipped the bag, a symphony of aromas danced around him. First, the sandwich. A glorious medley of ham, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. Jimmy couldn’t resist; he took a bite and, in a flash, the entire sandwich vanished into his stomach.

Next in line was the apple. He sunk his teeth into it, savouring the crispness and sweetness of each bite, including the core and seeds. His appetite was insatiable, much like his curiosity for what would happen next.

Last but not least, the chocolate bar. Unwrapping it, he broke off a piece and indulged in its smooth, creamy richness. It was so heavenly, in fact, that he ate the whole chocolate bar, including the wrapper. What can we say? Jimmy was nothing if not thorough.

Full and satisfied, Jimmy threw the now-empty lunch bag into the trash and raced outside to join his friends. The sense of achievement washed over him. He almost saw Mr. Brown’s face when he discovered his lunch had mysteriously disappeared.

However, little did Jimmy know he was in for a surprising twist. You see, Mr. Brown wasn’t having an ordinary day. No, he was grappling with a fierce cold, complete with a sore throat, a runny nose, and a fever. He had dosed on medicine in the morning but decided to take things further.

To combat his ailments, he had put honey and lemon juice in his sandwich to soothe his throat, ginger and cinnamon in his apple to clear his nose, and a dash of chilli powder and garlic in his chocolate bar to lower his fever. The result was a concoction that would be anything but ordinary.

Jimmy was blissfully unaware of this. As time passed, the consequences of his daring escapade became evident. First, his mouth tingled from the honey and lemon juice in the sandwich, like a spicy dance for his taste buds.

Then, as he bit into the apple, he felt a fiery tango of ginger and cinnamon in his nose, causing him to sneeze dramatically, much to the amusement of his friends.

And finally, as the chocolate melted in his mouth, the chilli powder and garlic put on a sizzling cha-cha in his stomach. His face turned a brilliant shade of crimson, and he began to sweat buckets. Jimmy was practically a human disco ball.

Feeling like he was about to burst into flames, he dashed for the bathroom, hoping to wash away the chaos of flavours from his mouth. Unfortunately, it was too late, and the damage was irreversible.

In his epiphany moment, he realized that he had not only eaten something meant for someone else but something that was essentially spicy enough to light up a fireworks display.

He felt remorse deep in his heart for what he had done. But it was too late to undo his audacious stunt. And that day, Jimmy learned a lesson as spicy as his stolen lunch: never mess with a teacher’s meal – especially when they’re trying to spice up their life!

The moral of the story is that one should always respect the property and personal boundaries of others. Specifically, this humorous tale teaches the importance of not taking or tampering with someone else’s belongings, especially their food, without permission. It emphasizes the need for consideration and empathy towards others, highlighting the consequences that can arise when you cross boundaries or play pranks without understanding the potential impact on someone else. So, the story’s moral is to treat others and their belongings with respect and kindness and to think twice before pulling off a daring stunt that might not be as funny as you initially thought.

BFRBs can also harm the person’s mental and emotional health, causing them to feel ashamed, guilty, low in self-confidence, isolated from others, or even depressed. People grappling with BFRBs may feel embarrassed about their appearance or behaviour, leading them to avoid social situations or activities that expose their affected areas. This can result in feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.

How to Help Your Child with BFRBs

Suppose you suspect your child may be dealing with BFRBs. In that case, the initial step is to engage in a supportive and non-judgmental conversation with them.
