Notables and Quotables

We are super excited to announce Roland's Triumph, Book III in the Heirs of Vanity Series, is now available on Amazon (www.amazon.com/author/rjhanson)!
Now we're packing our bags for a book signing in Decatur Texas at the Public Library this morning and then off for a brief camping trip. You will be able to find pics of those events on our facebook page, www.facebook.com/rolandsquest
The week's Notable and Quotable comes from Roland's Path, Book I in the Heirs of Vanity Series;
-The boys trained for death. Trained to prevent their own and cause their enemies’. Eldryn, however, had always had a way of taking things in stride. He always seemed to let words and events wash over him and then away as the ocean’s waves would a huge stone on the shore. Roland would not likely admit it, but he always admired that about his friend.

Until next time,
-RJ

Notables and Quotables

This week's Notable and Quotable comes from a gaming session we had not too long ago;
NPC- "Seize them."
Player- "Huh?"
*guards begin closing in with weapons drawn
Player- "Oh! Seize them, not sees them. That makes more sense."

Reminder, we'll be at the Decatur Public Library in Decatur Texas this coming Saturday from 10am to 2pm for a book signing.

We had a wild weekend! My wife and I attended the Child Welfare Charity Ball on Thursday in Addison Texas and then hurried home to host our annual Halloween Bash and Hayride. You can find pics on our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/rolandsquest
Until next time,
RJ

Notables and Quotables / Bonus Feature!

This week's Notable and Quotable is from Roland's Triumph (Book III of the Heirs of Vanity Trilogy). Scheduled to be published next week!
“It’s not up to Bolvii to save me from the dangers of this world,” Roland said. “That I must learn to do on my own.”
“My, that’s prideful,” Father Gadriel said in an unvarnished judgement. “You don’t think Bolvii had anything to do with the strength you were born with? You don’t believe he has anything to do with your strength of will?”
“If I just turn everything over to Him, then what am I supposed to do?” Roland asked. “Am I to just sit by and wait for Bolvii to handle the troubles of this world?”
“You trust Him,” Father Gadriel said. “Learn to be still and trust Him. You trust Him and allow Him to work through you. In your vow to the Prince to protect the people of this land you took a vow to uphold the edicts of Bolvii as well. I suspect you were taught those values early on and carry those ideals in your heart. I suspect that is what led you to Lawrec to begin with.”
“So, which is it?” Roland asked. “Am I in charge, or is He? Am I supposed to swear some sort of allegiance to this church, to you, and just do whatever He tells me? Or whatever you tell me that you say comes from Him?”

In response to a few requests we are including a bonus feature to this blog post.
The Code of the Cavalier

On my honor, I will never betray my integrity, my brothers and sisters of the Code, or their trust.

I will keep my life unsullied as an example to all.

I will faithfully carry out the duties of a knight without regard for station, rank, or race.

I will diligently discharge my duties with fairness, integrity, and dignity.

I will serve without the burdens of kinship or any form of partiality to sway me.

I will uphold all just laws of the land and enforce those laws with reason and mercy.

I will not violate those just laws, nor will I suffer their violation.

I will pray for peace while I prepare for war.

Should battle come, I will fight with honor.

Should battle come, I will fight until my dying breath for those I’ve sworn to protect.

Should my death come, I will face it with courage and pride for I will have lived as I have sworn.

This is my oath, my sacred vow, and I swear it now before my brothers and sisters of the Code of the Cavalier and my countrymen.

Sheld Fleet – The Code of the Cavalier

Until next time,
RJ

Notables and Quotables

This week's Notable and Quotable is from Roland's Path (Book I of the Heirs of Vanity Series);
Ungar and Eldryn stepped off into the dark leaving Roland staring blankly at the fire as he took another large swallow of the burning spirits in his clay jug.
“Your friend has been cursed,” Ungar said flatly.

Book Clubs and Ideas

I had a great time yesterday meeting with the North Fort Worth Book Club to tell them about Roland's Path and Roland's Vow (Books I and II of the Heirs of Vanity Series). They brought up an interesting idea that had never occurred to me. Questions from authors about the books to prompt book club discussions. What a great idea! So, I came up with these for Roland's Path last night. Let me know what you think;

Do you view Eldryn’s relationship with Roland as supportive or lackadaisical?

Does Roland overreact to Velryk?

Does Velryk overreact to Roland?

Can Ashcliff be trusted?

What do you think about Petie and the bond he develops with Roland and Eldryn?

What do you think about Roland’s decision regarding Petie?

In one word, describe Roland, Velryk, Eldryn, and Ashcliff.

If you could ask the author to add one thing to the book, what would that be?

If you could ask the author one question, what would it be?

What do you hope happens in the next book?

Please, if your answer contains SPOILERS, mark it SPOILERS and take care not to reveal anything to those who may not be as far along in the story as you.

Also, if you're in a book club or looking for one and you haven't checked out www.goodreads.com then you are missing out! They have a great website for writers and readers alike.

Until next time,
RJ

Day of Rest

Yesterday was exhausting but fun! Thank you to everyone that came out and saw us and picked up a copy of our tale! Thank you to the Wichita Falls Public Library, Pegasus Loft, and Crashworks Steam Studio for hosting us and helping out so much. Now to recoup before we start another week tomorrow. www.amazon.com/author/rjhanson

BTW, I'll be at meeting with the North Fort Worth Book Club at World Blend Coffee this coming Thursday (10/17/2019) and our crew will be at the Decatur Public Library in Decatur Texas on Saturday, 11/09/2019.

Now to shake off a bout of 'Imposture Syndrome' and get back to work on 'Lords of Order and Chaos.'

Book Signing Today!

This week's Notable and Quotable comes to you from our new book scheduled to come out this fall, Roland's Triumph, the last installment of the Heirs of Vanity Series.
Roland’s Triumph;
“Are you shamed that they call you their god of war?” Father asked.
“No,” Bolvii said after a moment of contemplation. “But those that call me so assign the virtues of their violence to me.”
“There is a virtue, a wisdom, in violence,” Father said.
“They place everything they call evil on my brother’s shoulders,” Bolvii said. “He is worshiped only by the worst of them. They call him the ‘UnMaker.’”
“Surely you don’t speak to me of fair versus unfair.”
“No,” Bolvii said. “I wouldn’t presume.”
“Yes, yes you would,” Father said. “But that is alright. You have ever loved them and that is to your credit. Your brother has his task. All things must end. Anything living must die, for how could it truly live without death?”
“I just want…”
“Yes,” Father said, cutting Bolvii short. “You do. You want. Desire is the birth of conflict. And conflict is not wrong. Conflict is only opposing forces. There could be no universe without conflict. There is no victory without defeat.”
“Yes, Father.”

Look for it here; www.amazon.com/author/rjhanson

Here we go again! 3events in Wichita Falls today and a convo with my editor about book3, Roland’s Triumph (comingsoon?). www.amazon.com/author/rjhanson

New Reviews, and other News!

The kind folks at https://theprairiesbookreview.com/201...
wrote this wonderful review of Roland's Path. As did the accomplished blogger; https://whatayeshareads.blogspot.com/

Interesting start to the day on Tuesday. I'm making coffee and don't even have my glasses on yet when I hear a commotion from the back yard. I (blearily) look out and see what I think is a coyote after our cats and peacocks. So, I grab my .308 that I keep by the back door and get a clear view (scope trumps glasses) of the coyote that's after them. Long story short, Remington: 1 / coyote: 0. I know some of you may not care for me shooting a coyote, but Henry (our peacock) was very glad that I did. www.amazon.com/author/rjhanson

Notables and Quotables

The following are what we call Notables and Quotables. Some are from our gaming sessions (pen and paper RPG known as Rolemaster) and others are from books published and books yet to come. I hope you enjoy!

This is from my current Work In Progress, Lords of Order and Chaos;
“All things can be a tonic or a toxin. It is all about judicious use.”

This one is from an rpg session a while back;
Tragic scene in which a player’s samurai character has disgraced his family and is going to commit ritual suicide. The gaming group is somber.
Player- I must now commit sudoku.
The rest of us look at each other and burst into laughter.
Clearly he meant seppuku and not the puzzle game of numbers.

This Notable and Quotable is from Roland's Vow, Book II in the Heirs of Vanity Series;
-“Your skill at finding logic to support the decisions of your heart astonishes even me some days,” El’ retorted.

This Notable and Quotable comes from Roland's Path, Book I of the Heirs of Vanity Series.
“Wait,” Eldryn interjected. “You have been lounging here hoping they would catch up to us?”
“Well, yes,” Roland said.

I love hearing back from readers about their favorite character, what they thought about a particular scene, or just that they're enjoying the book. Thank you so much for that! It means a great deal to me. If you enjoy any of our works, please leave a review on Amazon, Bookbub, or GoodReads.
You can learn more on Instagram @r.j.hanson or Twitter @rjhanson5 You can also follow me at https://www.bookbub.com/profile/r-j-h... and/or https://www.goodreads.com/author/show..., and by doing so you will get an email notification when new books are released and details about promotional offers.

More Notables and Quotables to come. Also, I may begin blogging about 'Confessions of a pantser learning to use an outline.'
