Welcome to this month’s Notable & Quotable. This month’s quote comes from our latest book, Stalking Shadows, Book IV in the Lords of Order & Chaos series. Audiobook coming soon!

“Why would you say such a thing?” Dunewell asked as he threw the rag to the ground.

“To remind you he is your brother, and that he is poison. You can’t trick yourself into thinking of him as only an enemy. You can’t rename him in your mind as Chaos Lord only; for those tricks will wither when you face him again. You must come to terms with the fact that he is your brother, and you will have to kill him.”

“How can you know that? We don’t even know…”

“Yes, we do. Lords of Chaos and Order always come in pairs. They are always tied to one another, although never so closely tied as the two of you, I think. He is alive and you feel it. You just don’t want to admit it to yourself. Were he dead, you would know without a doubt and instead of arguing with me on this riverbank, shovel in hand, you’d be off mourning somewhere while I handled this task on my own.”

”Is it your desire that I test whether or not this shovel will fit down your throat, or some other location, perhaps?”

“It is my desire that you get your mind and soul ready so that when you face him again, you will not hesitate to destroy the evil beast he’s become!”

An unreasoning anger ignited in Dunewell. He took up the shovel and turned to Jonas, taking two quick steps toward him. Dunewell raised the shovel and twisted it so the flat of the spade was aimed for Jonas’s head. Jonas shifted his feet and began tilting his own shovel up and forward…

“Ready in three, two, one…” Isaak yelled.

This month’s Character Bio: Mandurelle, a.k.a. Marnie. Roland and Eldryn first meet Marnie in the port city of Lavon situated between Hunthor and Lawrec. She was ‘on the block’ being sold to the highest bidder as restitution for her father’s tax evasion. I love the transition Marnie makes as she matures and realizes her power is not in her sword arm but rather her mind and firm grasp of trade. Welcome to this month’s Notable & Quotable and Happy New Year!

Although he cared little for them, many bards had spun tales of Morden Desch and his powers. Songs recounting his terrible powers to take thunder from the mountains and lightning from the skies had been sung in taverns and by campfires in all the civilized reaches of Stratvs. The master of the Blue Tower had been reputed to bring powerful men to their knees, begging. He had been said to cause nations to weep at the loss of their children. Some of those tales were true.

This month’s Character Bio: Lady Evalynne of Moras. I’ve always sort of envisioned her as a combination of those pictured below. She is stunningly beautiful but, make no mistake, she took Moras and the surrounding lands by the strength of her sword arm and bloody tactics. As to life here in our own little corner of the world, we are all doing well. This is Sunny, the newest addition to our family. Someone apparently dumped him on a dirt road near one of our cattle leases and it broke my heart to see him hungry and out in the cold. Michelle says if I keep this up (we’re up to four dogs now) that we’ll be able to qualify as an official animal rescue site before long.

“No doubt your feud with Lynneare has had some hand in this; however, I find the idea of a Lord of Order and Chaos Lord working together to kill Slythorne a very interesting notion.”

“Notion? It shouldn’t even be possible. The champions within them should be rioting at any hint of cooperation of the one with the other.”

This month’s Character Bio: Truthorne, aka Slythorne. Oh, boy. Truthorne has the potential for his own saga, if not series. He was born a nobleman, the son of a lord with vast lands. The family crest featured twin dragons which, before the Battles of Rending, symbolized loyalty; loyalty to the Church of Time and to the King, Ivant. A complete absence of light engulfed them in an instant. He felt the demon enter the top of his spine and scorch its way along each nerve of his body. His eyes burned as if he was consumed by a killing fever, and the fallen champion moved to the helm of his mind. The demon found the inner self, a small boy with tortured feet, kneeling in the center of this human’s intellect. This would be easy. The boy whimpered as the creature strode up behind and seized him by the top of the head. The demon jerked the boy’s head back and then recoiled in surprise and horror. The bangs of the young boy’s hair hung over a bloody chasm. The flesh of his neck and cheeks lay slack; trailing into that same cursed hole.

I killed that boy many years ago, the human said/thought from behind Shezmu. I mastered and killed him. Now I will master you.

As to life here in our own little corner of the world, we are all doing well. Our foreign exchange students had to go home in June and there were tears all around. I’m confident we’ll see them again… they LOVE Texas barbeque. Michelle and I took a day to hit the ComiCon in Dallas, Fanexpo and had a great time. I got to meet Cara Dune (Gina Carano), herself! I was not drunk in the picture with her. I think maybe that’s just the effect she has on me.
