The companies that have pulled out of Russia this week

The response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been swift and crushing. Companies, governments, and individuals have imposed sanctions, and cut ties with the country, in a way that has surprised many veteran observers.
Few expected, for example, countries to unite in banning Russia from the SWIFT digital-messaging system that is used by financial institutions …

Netflix asks federal judge to block prosecution over controversial ‘Cuties’ film

Attorneys for Netflix filed a complaint in federal court arguing that prosecution accusing them of spreading child pornography over their film “Cuties” would be a violation of the First Amendment right to free speech.

An online campaign called on viewers to cancel their membership in the video streaming service after they released the movie in 2020. Creators of the movie say it is a criticism of the sexualization of children, but many thought the movie itself contained offensive depictions of children being overtly sexualized.

In Oct. 2020, a grand jury indicted the company for the sexualized images of children under the age of 18.

In the filing on Thursday, the company argued that charges against the company would be unconstitutional.

“Netflix brings this complaint to enjoin Tyler County District Attorney Lucas Babin from abusing his office and infringing Netflix, Inc.’s constitutional rights,” the company said.

“This one prosecutor — out of all the prosecutors in America — has indicted Netflix not just once but five times,” the complaint continued. “Each indictment violates the U …

Ukraine pauses civilian evacuations, says Russia broke cease-fire

Ukraine is pausing civilian evacuations in the southeastern city of Mariupol, with Ukrainian officials saying that Russia violated a cease-fire agreement it had announced for both Mariupol and the eastern city of Volnovakha, The Associated Press reported.“The Russian side is not holding to the ceasefire and has continued firing on Mariupol itself and on its surrounding area,” the deputy head of the Ukrainian president’s office, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, said, according to the AP. “Talks with the Russian Federation are ongoing regarding setting up a ceasefire and ensuring a safe humanitarian corridor.”Serhiy Orlov, deputy mayor of Mariupol, also told the BBC that residents could not leave because the cease-fire had been broken.ADVERTISEMENT“The Russians said are continuing to bomb us and use artillery. It is crazy,” Orlov told the British broadcaster. “There is no ceasefire in Mariupol and there is no ceasefire all along …

“The People’s Convoy” has arrived in Hagerstown, Maryland.
The trucker convoy, which departed from Adelanto, California, last month, is making its way toward Washington, DC, to protest federal coronavirus mandates and demand an end to President Joe Biden’s emergency declaration.
On Friday evening, the eve of their drive into the D.C. beltway area, organizers are holding a rally.

Under DA Chesa Boudin convictions are down and more felonies are ‘charged down’

This week the San Francisco District Attorney’s office released new data about his handling of various crimes while in office. The San Francisco Chronicle has a lengthy analysis of those decisions but the overall gist is visible in this one graph:
Things really are changing under Chesa Boudin in San Franciscohttps://t.co/3KWnABfrUt pic.twitter.com/BrGVCAWg2C

The graph above is for all crime but the data also showed the results for specific categories of crime:

Digging deeper into the data the @sfchronicle released by the @SFDAOffice 📉
Chesa’s conviction rates on felony assaults plummeted, especially in 2019 vs 2021. Offender who are attacking people on the street are just being dismissed, instead of convicted. (1) pic.twitter.com/l5nqMT4E9u

When it comes to drug cases, conviction is now less likely than dismissal or diversion and the situation is even more dramatic for petty theft, which includes things like shoplifting and car break-ins. Look at the second chart below and you’ll see a pretty good explanation of why these types of crime are on the rise. Consequences are minimal even for the relatively small number of people who are arrested.

Wondering why retail theft, car break-ins, burglaries are out of control?
Conviction rates hit the floo …

New Government Data Show Real Wages Declining, Not Rising, Under Biden

The new February jobs report released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is, at first glance, positive. The economy added 678,000 jobs last month, and the unemployment rate is down to just 3.8%. But before President Biden starts his victory lap, we need to talk about an undercovered yet crucial data point in this release: Americans’ real wages have declined over the last year.

Just In: The US economy added back 678,000 jobs in February, greatly exceeding expectations and a sign the jobs recovery was on track (at least before Russia invaded Ukraine).
US Unemployment Rate = 3.8%Wage growth = 5.1%
**Over 90% of jobs lost in the pandemic have returned**
— Heather Long (@byHeatherLong) March 4, 2022

Average hourly wages grew by just 1 cent in February. (Yikes!) Overall, for the year, wages rose 5.1% from February 2021 to February 2022. That’s good news, right?
Not so fast.
We don’t have the final inflation numbers for February yet, but we do have January. And the January Consumer Price Index showed that average consumer prices rose 7.5% from January 2021 to January 2022. So, a roug …

Volodymyr Zelensky Transforms Germany — and Europe

It’s been a week since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and Kyiv, and even Kharkiv, 20 miles from the Russian border, remain under Ukrainian control. Contrary to many predictions, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces have fallen short of their goals so far, but there can be no certainty about the outcome in Ukraine — or Russia. What is clear is that there has been a vast and historic transformation in Europe, and especially in its largest nation, Germany, that will continue reverberating no matter what happens in Ukraine. Old policies have been cast aside as readily as last week’s garbage.Credit for this goes to the Ukrainian people, who have been resisting the Russian attack, and especially to their president, the former comedian Volodymyr Zelensky. He has remained in Kyiv, refusing to flee to safety. When the United …

Pentagon Official Says US Doesn’t Stand ‘A Fighting Chance’

China may already be sharing data with Russia, and America wouldn’t stand “a fighting chance” if the two superpowers combined their cyberwarfare capabilities, the U. S. Air Force’s former chief software officer told Fox News.

“Not many nations would be able to push back,” Nicolas Chaillan told Fox News. “I don’t even think the United States would be able to push back if tomorrow Russia and China decide to come together against us.”

“I think it would be very difficult for us to be able to even have a fighting chance, let alone a nation like Ukraine,” he added.

Tucker Calls Out Biden’s SCOTUS Nominee — What’s She Hiding?

Fox News host Tucker Carlson discussed Joe Biden’s decision to nominate D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to take the place of retiring U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.

During his opening segment, Carlson questioned Biden’s claim during his State of the Union Address that Jackson was “one of our nation’s top legal minds.”

“Biden went on to mention someone called Ketanji Brown Jackson,” Carlson said on his show Wednesday night.

“That’s not a name most Americans know because Ketanji Brown Jackson has been an appellate judge for less than a year. But Joe Biden assured us she is, quote, ‘one of our top legal minds.’”

“So, is Ketanji Brown Jackson—a name that even Joe Biden has trouble pronouncing—one of the top legal minds in the entire country?” Carlson went on.

“We certainly hope so. Biden’s right. Appointing her is one of his gravest constitutional duties. So it might be time for Joe Biden to let us know what Ketanji Brown Jackson’s LSAT score was,” he added.
