Director Adam McKay Demands Defunding of Fuel Industry as Gas Prices Crush Working Class

March 19 (UPI) — Don’t Look Up director Adam McKay turned out to support the Youth Climate Strike Los Angeles.
McKay joined an indigenous and youth-led coalition for a march Friday from Pershing Square to City National Bank where they demanded the United Teachers Association divest its $20 billion pension fund from fossil fuels.

The group is planning another protest on March 25, the day the union is slated to vote on the pension fund.
They also complained about the impact the Coastal Gas Link pipeline in British Columbia, Canada, may have on the Wet’suwet’en tribe’s territory and water supply.
“You are destroying lives, you are destroying indigenous people,” McKay said. “Is it worth it? How much is enough? That’s the question we ask you. At what point does human decency enter the board room? That’s the question we ask.”
Don’t Look Up is a black comedy about what happens when powerful people ignore scientists who warn them the end of the world is imminent.

Actress Rita Moreno Urges Celebs to ‘Keep on Preaching’ Politics, Ignore Advice to Be Less Divisive — ‘F**k ‘Em’

Oscar-winning actress Rita Moreno attacked critics of Hollywood celebrities who speak out about political and social justice issues, proclaiming, “Fuck ’em!” during her acceptance speech after winning the Stanley Kramer Award at the PGAs on Saturday.
“We are in the throes of yet another award season,” the 90-year-old actress said, according to a report by Deadline.
“Some in our tribe have been known to use the spotlight to advocate for issues addressed in their nominated works — climate change, universal health care, voting rights, LGBTQ advocacy and others — and I know for some in the audience, in some audiences, have been known to create, how should I say, a mild discomfort. For others, heart palpitations,” she added.

Jessica Chastain presents the PGA’s Stanley Kramer Award to Rita Moreno, 90, who Chastain says introduced herself to Chastain a decade ago by complimenting Chastain’s breasts. Moreno dances to stage, recounts being at MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech, gives a great …

How All-American ‘Dog’ Is Defying the Odds

It’s brutal out there for original stories.
The biggest box office hits of late are superhero reboots and sequels – think “The Batman” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Original fare, even films directed by Hollywood heavy hitters, are struggling to draw a crowd. Three stark examples?
“Nightmare Alley” (Guillermo del Toro) $11 million
“Licorice Pizza” (Paul Thomas Anderson) $16.9 million (to date)
“Moonfall” (Roland Emmerich) $19 million
So Channing Tatum’s big-screen comeback, an original yarn with a tepid title, seemed like another box office dog. Instead, “DOG” is a hit, devouring the scraps left behind by Batman and that wall-crawler.

The film’s current box office haul? A tidy $54 million, and growing. This weekend, the movie fell just 21 percent from the previous week despite losing 100 screens nationwide and becoming available for VOD viewing. The film opened with a strong but not overwhelming $15 million, but word of mouth subsequently kicked in.
That, plus a very modest $15 million budget, means this “DOG” proved a wise investment.
Why? It’s not too complicated.
Tatum remains a …

How Dem officials, the media and Big Tech worked in concert to bury the Hunter Biden story

Everlasting, undying, soul-rending shame be upon you, Facebook and Twitter and Politico and all the others who covered up, denied and suppressed this newspaper’s true and accurate reporting about Hunter Biden’s laptop in 2020. You should be hurling yourselves at the feet of the American people, begging forgiveness. You should be renting billboards saying, “WE LIED.”

But most importantly, you should be hauled before Congress to answer humiliating questions.

These and other information purveyors owe us — not just this paper, but this country — restitution for what now looks like the most egregious and willful fake-news scam of our time. This paper’s scoops on Hunter Biden’s laptop in 2020 were labeled “Russian misinformation” (Politico), a “hoax” (Steven Brill of “fact-check” site NewsGuard), discredited by “many, many red flags” (NPR) and a “hack and leak” operation that had to be throttled (Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg).

Now that the New York Ti …

Putin’s way of war is utter depravity

Soon after Vladimir Putin’s forces leveled that Kyiv theater clearly labeled “children,” word came over social media from victims of Putin’s 2016 bombings in Syria’s civil war: Never do that, Russia targets anything with a humanitarian sign.

Such is Putin’s way of war: bombing shelters and hospitals and generally targeting civilians.

Days afterward, desperate Kyivans are still digging out, hoping to rescue the 1,300 or so who’d sheltered in the basement.

This follows the March 9 shelling of a maternity hospital in besieged Mariupol, leaving it “literally destroyed,” as regional Gov. Pavlo Kyrylenko put it. The attack wounded at least 17, including women in labor, and trapped more beneath the rubble.

One now-infamous image from the scene shows emergency personnel carrying out a heavily pregnant and bleeding woman on a stretcher.

Rushed to another hospital, the mom and her baby died last weekend. Her pelvis had been crushed and her hip detached; the baby was delivered via cesarean “but showed no signs of life,” the surgeon wept.

Schools, apartments, hospitals: Putin is leveling th …

Carrier George Washington running more than a year behind schedule

WASHINGTON — A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier going through its mid-life refueling is now delayed by more than a year, due to new work that emerged during the repair and pandemic-related labor challenges.Nimitz-class carrier George Washington began its refueling and complex overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding in August 2017. These RCOHs, conducted halfway through a carrier’s 50-year service life to refuel the nuclear power reactor and conduct significant repairs and upgrades, typically last four years.Under a four-year schedule, George Washington would have been complete by August 2021. The ship reached a 50% milestone right on time, in August 2019, and several subsequent news releases noted a 2021 completion date.By September 2020, though, a company news release noted a 2022 date. The Navy now tells Defense News the carrier is on track to complete the RCOH in December 2022.“The RCOH is currently 92.5% complete, with some propulsion plant work, catapult work, and combat systems testing remaining,” Naval Sea Systems Command spokesman Alan Baribeau wrote in a March 17 email. He said the two main causes of the delay were unplanned growth work, though he did not specify in what areas, as well as labor inefficiencies.“COVID-19 has also contributed to the delay, both directly (e.g. te …

China wants a Navy base in Africa that would put America’s East Coast in reach

The general in charge of U.S. Africa Command testified on Thursday that China is seeking to build a navy base on the Atlantic coast of Africa, placing American national security at risk.

According to General Stephen J. Townsend, China has been seeking opportunities to build a new military installation all along Africa’s West coast, as it would give the nation a necessary staging point for naval operations in the Atlantic. That could pose a distinct threat to America’s eastern seaboard, especially from Chinese nuclear ballistic missile submarines.

“The thing I think I’m most worried about is this military base on the Atlantic coast, and where they have the most traction for that today is in Equatorial Guinea,” Townsend told the House Armed Services Committee.

China’s massive Navy has grown considerably in recent years, and when combined with China’s militarized Coast Guard and Maritime Militia, both of which answer directly t …

Summers: I Haven’t Seen Any ‘Serious Support’ for Biden’s Claim Oil Companies Are Profiteering

During an interview aired on Friday’s edition of Bloomberg’s “Wall Street Week,” economist, Harvard Professor, Director of the National Economic Council under President Barack Obama, and Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton Larry Summers responded to President Joe Biden’s tweet accusing oil and gas companies of padding their profits by keeping gas prices high by stating, “there’s nothing that would support that in the president’s tweet, and I haven’t seen any analysis coming out of the administration, or anyplace else, that provided serious support for that.”
Summers said, “I wish the president got more help from his economic advisers. Those spreads between gasoline prices and refined prices vary substantially on a range of factors. There [are] lags between the price of oil and the price of gasoli …

Why Your Sleep Is Impacted by Electric Lights

A new report finds that electric light impacts the circadian rhythm in people and can disrupt sleep.Experts explain how people should be exposed to bright light during the day and evening to contribute to healthy body rhythms, restful sleep, and daytime alertness.Researchers say light affects our daily patterns of sleep and alertness through a specialized cell in the eye using a light-sensitive protein called melanopsin.A new study published in the journal PLOS Biology says the light humans experience in daily life heavily influences body rhythms, with around-the-clock access to electric lights combined with reduced exposure to natural sunlight leading to disruptions in sleep.According to the study, the combination negatively impacts human health, well-being, and productivity. The research also recommends how people should be exposed to bright light during the day and evening to contribute to healthy body rhythms, restful sleep, and daytime alertness. An international team of scientists led by Timothy Brown, PhD, from the UK’s University of Manchester, and Kenneth Wright, PhD, from the University of Colorado Boulder, ha …
