Whenever I'm asked about the meaning of the title of my book, "Fearless Intelligence," I tell them it's another way of saying fear makes us stupid. Yet, fear and stress are responses to confusion and uncertainty as well as their source.
So stress is a vicious cycle of fear and ignorance, each promoting the other. We must find and explore our stress, anxiety, and fear to break free. Therefore, our topic in this week's free "Wisdom of the Soul" class is "Finding Hidden Stress."

Often a particularly harmful emotion will trigger another, which triggers another and so on and on — vicious cycles pulling us into deep despair and anxiety. Hatred is born of anger, which comes from fear and leads to personal suffering and, too often, violent outbursts.
Those core fears can result from simple misunderstandings, ignorance, uncertainty, or confusion. But fear assumes an appearance of having been done to us by others — some nasty insult or even a mindless, offhand remark. As we blame others for our emotional responses, the vicious cycle grows and accelerates.
However, when we accept responsibility for our emotions, we can rise above the anger and hatred it provokes in us. Further, once we recognize the suffering of those who hurt us, we can release our unhappiness and break the cyclic chain.

True spiritual seekers do not avoid fear. They face it directly and explore it deeply. Often we become emotionally hurt, but we do not suffer, for we continue onward, witnessing how our hearts grow as they collectively heal.
Sacred activism is an essential component of spiritual growth. Standing above and beyond lurid politics, we peacefully confront injustice, racism, misogyny, bigotry, hatred, anger, and fear of all kinds with intelligence and compassion.
We speak-up and confront the wicked, the heartless and the corrupt. In June of 2016, Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives declared, "Sometimes you have to make a way out of no way. We have been too quiet for too long. There comes a time when you have to say something, when you have to make a little noise. When you have to move your feet. This is the time. Now is the time to get in the way. The time to act is now. We will be silent no more. The time for silence is over."

In Eastern philosophy and Buddhism in particular, there are ten fetters. These are not commandments to refrain from certain beliefs and behaviors. The ten fetters are simply those habits that hinder or restrain our personal growth.

As natural as it may seem to defend ourselves when attacked, even if only verbally, defensive behavior often makes things worse. When an offensive person insults our character or sense of well-being, a defensive response often tells the assailant they've found a weak spot or "hit a nerve," so to speak. So they double-down and move in for the kill.
But what if we could be more aware of what's happening? First, we could remember this is not real danger, but merely someone's opinion. Then remind ourselves that this verbal assault may reveal more about the attacker than us. Now we can replace a reflexive reaction with a much smarter, more conscious and appropriate response. In other words, we could refuse to "take the bait."
What if we were sufficiently aware in the moment to ask ourselves, "Wait! Who am I defending?" and "Why do I believe I need a defense?"
Indeed, who is this so-called "Self" we've adopted that is so insecure it can't handle a little criticism or disagreement? Is our defensiveness rooted in a need to better understand the truth of who we are?
