As natural as it may seem to defend ourselves when attacked, even if only verbally, defensive behavior often makes things worse. When an offensive person insults our character or sense of well-being, a defensive response often tells the assailant they've found a weak spot or "hit a nerve," so to speak. So they double-down and move in for the kill.
But what if we could be more aware of what's happening? First, we could remember this is not real danger, but merely someone's opinion. Then remind ourselves that this verbal assault may reveal more about the attacker than us. Now we can replace a reflexive reaction with a much smarter, more conscious and appropriate response. In other words, we could refuse to "take the bait."
What if we were sufficiently aware in the moment to ask ourselves, "Wait! Who am I defending?" and "Why do I believe I need a defense?"
Indeed, who is this so-called "Self" we've adopted that is so insecure it can't handle a little criticism or disagreement? Is our defensiveness rooted in a need to better understand the truth of who we are?
