Although all emotions have value, some are called "negative feelings" simply because they hurt. For the most part, negative emotions are fueled by uncertainty, confusion, and ignorance. And it's this fear and anxiety, in one form or another, that becomes anger, hatred, and even violent behavior.
No doubt, anger is the king of negative emotions. It is rage, fury, and wrath — often associated with irrational, reflexive hostility and violence.
Anger is a defense mechanism that promotes survival by fighting or running — behavior that may be appropriate when facing real, clear and present danger but which usually makes things worse when triggered by uncertainty.
In this week's free Wisdom of the Soul Zoom class, we'll examine anger, its roots, its manifestations, its consequences, and tips for de-escalating those negative passions before it's too late.

This week's Wisdom of the Soul class features a discussion known to brain researchers as executive function. It's the ability in the human brain's frontal lobes to pay attention and make decisions — and it can benefit from development.
Stress, anxiety, and overstimulation generally shatter and scatter attention. Consequently, we often react reflexively without considering our options, much less their consequences.
"Choosing your choices" is a matter of being consciously aware. No matter how intelligent we may be, it does little good when we live in the fog of unawareness.

The phrase, "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth," is traceable to the ancient Mesopotamian Code of Hammurabi. Though carved into stone 3800 years ago, this concept is now largely misunderstood.
It does not mean retribution is owed. It was a restraint limiting punishment to fit the crime — to restrict local authorities from executing a man for stealing bread or failing to pay his taxes on time.
In this 21st century C.E., rehabilitation is gaining favor over punishment — though slowly. Many parents still beat their children, and the death penalty remains lawful in 27 American states, as well as the federal government and the U.S. military. (Over half of the world's nations have banned the practice.)
However, research by psychologists and sociologists reveals no satisfaction, closure, or sense of justice from revenge. In fact, pursuing the lust for retribution actually prolongs a victim's pain and suffering.

It is odd how easily we overlook the unquenchable nature of desire. Time and time again, we are tricked into believing we will be satisfied once we obtain this object, this circumstance, that event, or relationship.
When we succeed, we do become happy — for a moment or two. But it never lasts. Our desire nature soon wanders off in a different direction, searching for something, anything, to ease the subtle gnawing of our discontent.
Can we step off this infernal hampster wheel? And if so, how can we be more self-aware of the continual urge to find lasting fulfillment?

Most of us give little thought to our dreams and even less to sleep. Odd, given that we spend one-third of our lives asleep.

The age-old debate between free will and predestination may be a false dichotomy. Perhaps both are true to some degree.
Is it possible we find ourselves endowed with volition yet somewhat constrained by karmic necessity or a grand cosmic plan? Could some parts of our future rely on the choices we make, while other bits already have been determined?

Shadow is a fine allegory for evil because it is not a force that opposes light. In fact, without light, shadow would cease to exist, though darkness would prevail.
It may be a fine point, but shadow is not darkness. It is a contrast to light necessary to define form. This brings us to the question: Is evil an irredeemable void of darkness, or like shadow, a condition of light that can be illumined?
And for those recovering from an especially dogmatic religious indoctrination, who is Satin or Lucifer? Is he confined to hell or can he come and go as he pleases? Is the devil the CEO of hell or does he work for God? And why does God tolerate or even rely on the existence of evil, fear, and ignorance?
