It's understandable that we would seek pleasure and avoid pain. But by holding onto pleasure and resisting discomfort, our happiness depends on things never changing. And since all things, states, and conditions are impermanent, that's a set-up for disaster.
Such grasping and clinging is a necessary part of early childhood development. But as we mature, our attachments to people, places, things, and even thoughts and beliefs not only inhibit our growth and freedom but generate personal pain and suffering.
To release this self-imposed torment, we must let go of our attachments — that is, our desire for everything to be as we wish it to be forevermore. Though it frightens us to consider losing a loving relationship or to watch our precious material things break, rust, and corrode — even our values and beliefs can be shattered by new circumstances — there is true freedom in letting go and accepting the inevitable flux and change of reality.

Our memories are better than we believe. But we often degrade ourselves by saying, "I can't remember," when we're simply impatient. Or when a memory occurs a bit later than we'd hoped, we declare, "Oh, I forgot," when, in fact, you had just remembered.
Experiencing a "tip of the tongue" feeling, we typically try too hard to remember, which makes recall even less likely. And what is that bizarre satisfaction we get from admitting, "I knew I was going to forget that."

There are several distinct ways in which "life is but a dream." First, our waking life reflects our innermost intentions, thoughts, and feelings. There's also the implication that life is fleeting and ephemeral like a dream. Further, an objective or goal cannot be attained without being clearly conceived or "dreamed up."
In one of his best-known poems, Edgar Allan Poe suggested life is but "a dream within a dream." Psychologists describe this phenomenon as a type of lucid dream — a hybrid of REM sleep and wakefulness. But there's much more to Poe's quip.
In this Sunday's free Wisdom of the Soul Zoom class, we'll talk about the character you believe yourself to be in your dreams and what happens to him or her upon awakening. And then what happens to our ego when we awake to the reality we've created in our waking state?

To understand depression, we must understand anxiety. Though there are feelings of depression that appear to be symptoms of certain physical ailments and even genetic predispositions to depression, the bulk of it is anxiety.
And what is anxiety? Often, it is worry, doubt, or nervous apprehension about some anticipated negative outcome. But more commonly, anxiety is simple stress — a stimulus overload of uncertainty, confusion, and conflict.
In this week's free Wisdom of the Soul Zoom class, we'll explore acute and chronic sadness and the vicious cycles that can cause us to feel hopelessly trapped.

Many years ago, a radio listener of mine gifted me with a very special clock. It was a big wall clock, maybe 14 inches in diameter but the hands and motor were missing.
In the center of the clock, a large sticker covered the hole where the hands had once protruded. And on the sticker were printed just three letters: NOW.
I loved that clock. It was the most accurate and most energy-efficient clock imaginable. More importantly, that clock helped me realize I always knew what time it was. It was NOW!
Time is an illusion. Past and future exist only in our imagination, yet we spend more time living there than in the reality of the present moment. Why do we do this? What are the consequences of persistently reliving the past and fearing the future? And how do we benefit from purposefully living in the present moment?

Pure consciousness is love — the awareness that there is no other, no individuality, no separation. But as consciousness streams through the human brain, it constricts to an alienated sense of self and survival at the expense of others.
Yet love persists, attracting individuals to each other through our inherent need for affection, belonging, and delight.
Essentially, love is ineffable — indescribable. As consciousness, however, we can learn much about ourselves and the world by exploring the fundamentals of awareness.

Fear is the root emotion fueling all heartache, sadness, and despair. Even anger and hatred are born of and nurtured by fear. And yet fear may be the most misunderstood of all emotions.
Fear has nothing to do with danger. Instead, it is the feeling of uncertainty, confusion, and unawareness. Fear is ignorance, and understanding is its antidote.
Beyond our failure to understand our circumstances lies our failure to understand ourselves, and it's that self-awareness that needs development if we are to manage our anxiety.
