Having discussed the four layers of consciousness last week, we'll use tomorrow's class to explore the basic states of consciousness from deep sleep, through various dream states, to wide awake. I'll also speak about powers of mind and the relationship of the conscious mind to the unconscious.
These two classes will help you understand the classic "double-slit" experiment from quantum physics, and the remarkable phenomena of sub-atomic particles acting like both energy and mass depending upon how they are observed — a class we'll offer the following Sunday, October 30th.

Consciousness is the mind's awareness — the conditions and behavior that result from our mental and emotional insight and understanding. Consciousness is variable and dynamic, meaning there are times when we are more or less aware of our self and the world. Even when the mind goes completely blank for a moment or two, we remain conscious and aware. So consciousness exists independently from our thoughts, feelings, events and conditions.

There are many references in mystical literature to the ego's resistance to growth and change, including "The Dweller on the Threshold" and the concept of the "Ring Pass Not."
Change is stressful, whether good or bad, happy or sad. Beginning a new job can generate as much anxiety as being fired from our last one.
Yet because the world is in constant flux and is ultimately impermanent, we pay a price for refusing to change — holding on to whatever is familiar, even when painful.
In truth, all fear and anxiety are responses to our innate fear of things unknown. So the antidote requires both knowledge and understanding.

Perhaps you've heard the phrase, "straight and narrow" as a reference to good behavior and honesty. Similarly, literary references to "walking the razor's edge" imply a risky balance.
The Middle Way in Eastern philosophy, particularly Buddhism, is such a reference — remain centered, balanced, vigilant, and responsive. Do not be mislead by extreme views nor tempted by false dichotomies.
The Middle Way is also the emotional heart between our mind and body, which connects to the soul's position between spirit and matter (Cause & Effect). Philosophy can be exoteric or esoteric. The exoteric is meant to be understood by everyone. However, the esoteric is for "the most worthy" — those who love the way symbolism, metaphor, synchronicity, and poetry lift our understanding to new heights.
Central to esoteric philosophy is the tradition of perennialism — the devotional study of ancient, proven principles of consciousness, thought, and being. These are largely spiritual beliefs about humanity's awareness of its authentic identity and our relationship to all things.
In this week's "Wisdom of the Soul" Zoom class, we'll review the core tenets of perennialism as found in shamanism, mysticism, alchemy, neo-platonism, Sufism, Rosicrucianism, Cabala, and the Eastern Vedas as they've influenced yoga, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and others who see everything in the One and the One in everything — no illusions of separation.
