Jim Butcher: Changes
Dear Author,
You killed the Beetle. You cruel [insert word here].
It seems the enemies weren't dangerous enough yet. This time you send Harry Dresden against the whole of the Red Court of vampires. It turns out the Red King and his highest lords are the Mayan Gods. And they still have priests who offer them human sacrifice. While you were at it, you brought the Norse gods into the game, too.
The war with the vampires has weakened the White Council. It might wipe them out. And as if the stakes weren't high enough, you have the vampires abduct a little girl. Harry Dresden to the rescue, Susan by his side.
Changes had the highest tension of all the Dresden books so far. We still know Dresden must be around for the next volume - but everyone he loves can die, and Dresden himself can sell his soul to all sorts of devils. He's short on help, too: In the past volumes you killed a Knight of the Sword and sent another into retirement, you made Harry call in favours so he can't use them now. Doom all around, fighting scenes galore, and Harry Dresden wisecracking throughout. This is my favourite book in the series.
I can't wait to see what comes after Changes.
On an afterthought: The cover image is all wrong. You describe Harry Dresden in a Conquistador's shining armour. Pity the painter drew the usual leather coat. It looks cool, but the armour would have looked even cooler.

Chantal de Rosamel: Aromas en mi jardín
Muy lector mío:
¿Te gustan las plantas aromáticas? A mí me encantan. El año pasado sembré hierbabuena, cebollino y ajedrea en las macetas del balcón. La hierbabuena está rebrotando, la ajedrea se ha resembrado sola y también está volviendo. Hoy he sembrado hinojo y cilantro tras consultar con Chantal de Rosamel.
Aromas en mi jardín se centra más en los jardines de adorno que en las especias, pero además de arbustos y florecitas contiene las descripciones y fichas de diez hierbas aromáticas para la cocina. Da una introducción a la horticultura en general y las flores con buen olor en especial. No pormenoriza en las mil variedades que de cada planta hay; para ello haría falta un libro mucho más grueso. Sí dice dónde plantar cada especie: al sol o a la sombra, en qué clase de suelo, cuándo sembrar, etc. Además dice cuáles son anuales, cuáles se resiembran solas, cuáles rebrotan, cómo prepararlas para el invierno y demás.
Este libro no me hará experta en horticultura. Pero me siento bien introducida para empezar.

Amelie Fried: Paradies
Liebe Autorin,
im Prolog lassen Sie durchblicken, dass etwas Schreckliches passiert ist. Taucher suchen nach einer Leiche. Dann das erste Kapitel. Sie stellen uns vier Frauen vor. Eine Menge Fakten soll ich mir merken auf den ersten Seiten. Es geht wie in der Vorstellungsrunde in einem Seminar: Als die dritte spricht, habe ich schon vergessen, wie die erste hieß.
Die vier Hauptfiguren checken ein ins Hotel Paraíso und beginnen ihren Wellnessurlaub. Tretbootfahren, Yoga, Körpererfahrungen, die Hochzeitsfeier anderer Gäste. Zwischendurch unternimmt eine der Frauen einen fehlgeleiteten Versuch, im nahegelegenen Dorf ein Elendsviertel aufzuräumen. Kurzum, es passiert nichts. Nach einem Drittel des Buches haben wir noch kein Rätsel, das es zu lösen gälte, keine unaufhaltsame Gefahr, kein Liebesdrama, kein Aufeinandertreffen unvereinbarer Pläne oder Wünsche. Keine Handlung. Die Leiche aus dem Vorspann ist lange vergessen, der Sturm aus dem Klappentext noch weit entfernt. Ich will nicht mehr wissen, wer stirbt: das Trauma, das Helfersyndrom, das Luxusweibchen oder die Menopause? Oder tun sie sich zusammen und ermorden die Esoterikhexe? Ich werde es nicht erfahren. Genug gelangweilt.

Jim Butcher: Turn Coat
Dear Author:
Since you degraded the Denarians, Harry Dresden needs a new invincibe opponent. In walks the skinwalker, a nightmare from Navajo mythology. Now Dresden needs help to bring it down. He could ask Listens-to-Wind, mighty wizard and member of the Senior Council, about Navajo myths and how to kill a demigod. He doesn't. He asks his talking skull who knows next to nothing and admits it. But Bob the spirit of intellect doesn't even suggest bringing in an expert. Harry talks to Listens-to-Wind about something else, but doesn't think to bring up the skinwalker. Instead, he plots a plot where forces from the Senior Council of wizards and the White Court of vampires together face two small armies sent by evil wizards. Then he calls the skinwalker to the same spot. In the worst of cases, the two armies and the nigh-invincible skinwalker could have banded together and wiped out the best fighting wizards of the Council and Harry's friends in the White Court.
Luckily, Harry's enemies are so disorganized that neither small army knows about the other. Luckily, the skinwalker takes no interest in what happens a few meters away. And luckily, Wizard Listens-to-Wind is among the White Council fighters.
A disappointing victory. Dresden didn't deserve to survive that one.

Veikko Bartel: Mörder
Lieber Autor,
die Definition von Wahndelikt sieht bei Wikipedia anders aus als bei Ihnen in der letzten Fußnote. Laut Wikipedia geschieht ein Wahndelikt, wenn jemand glaubt, ein Verbrechen zu begehen, weil er nicht weiß, dass sein Tun gar nicht verboten ist. Ihr Beispiel mit der Hexerei fällt dagegen unter untauglichen Versuch und bildet hier den Sonderfall des abergläubischen Versuchs. Wer hat sich getäuscht, Sie oder der Verfasser des Wikipedia-Artikels? Oder stammen die Fußnoten nicht von Ihnen?
Kommen wir zum Haupttext. Bevor Sie uns die Mörder vorstellen, beschreiben Sie im Vorwort, was Strafverteidigung für Sie bedeutet. Später im Buch werden Sie sich noch einmal rechtfertigen für Ihren Beruf oder Ihre Berufung. Wen wollen Sie überzeugen, den Leser oder sich selbst? Über den Dingen stehen Sie jedenfalls noch nicht. Und nach so viel Loblied und Leidenschaft lehren Sie heute Steuerrecht. Wie ist das passiert, Herr Bartel?
Sie erzählen von sechs Mordfällen. Fünfmal zeigen Sie uns den Täter, so weit Sie können, als ganzen Menschen. Sie nehmen uns mit nach Thailand, wo viele Männer stranden; in ein Sklavenhaus mitten in Deutschland; zu einer bizarren Gerichtsverhandlung in Neu Delhi. Im sechsten Text geht es um Sie selbst und das Gewissen eines Verteidigers. Außergewöhnlich sind die Fälle alle. Ihr Buch lebt von fremden Ländern und von fremden Orten im eigenen Land.
Noch mehr als in Ihrem ersten Buch, Mörderinnen, lassen Sie uns in Ihren eigenen Kopf schauen. Sie werten, Sie urteilen. Sie schreiben, wie Sie vielleicht denken, mit Umgangssprache und unscharfen Sätzen: "andererseits irgendwie wahnsinnig wichtig". Ihr Stil ist mir diesmal zu nahe an dem der Zeitung mit den vier Buchstaben. Zu hastig geschrieben. Auf den Inhalt verlassen, nicht auf die Sprache geachtet.
Nun haben Sie über Mörderinnen und Mörder geschrieben, Herr Bartel. Die herausragenden Fälle sind verbraucht. Was haben Sie jetzt vor? Vielleicht werden Sie sich hinsetzen und schreiben. Ob ich ein drittes Buch von Ihnen bestellen würde? Nicht unbesehen.

Jim Butcher: Small Favor

In Death Masks, Harry Dresden asks the Archive about her power.
"My mother passed it on to me," she replied. "As I was born, just as she received it when she was born."
"And your mother lets a mercenary drive you around?"
"Certainly not. My mother is dead, wizard." She frowned. "Not dead, technically. But all that she knew and was came into me. She became an empty cup. A persistent vegetative state." Her eyes grew a little wistful, distant. "She's free of it. But she certainly isn't alive in the most vital sense."
It sounds like every Archive passes on her power when the daughter is born. But in Small Favor, Dresden and Warden Luccio have a conversation:
“The Archive...has been around for a long time. Always passed down in a family line, mother to daughter. Usually the Archive is inherited by a woman when she’s in her early to mid-thirties, when her mother dies, and after she’s given birth to her own daughter. Accidents are rare. Part of the Archive’s nature is a drive to protect itself, a need to avoid exposing the person hosting it to risk. And given the extensive knowledge available to it, the Archive is very good at avoiding risky situations in the first place. And, should they arise, the power available to the Archive generally ensures its survival. It is extremely rare for the host of an Archive to die young.”
I grunted. “Go on.”
“When the Archive is passed...Harry, try to imagine living your life, with all of its triumphs and tragedies—and suddenly you find yourself with a second set of memories, every bit as real to you as your own. A second set of heartaches, loves, triumphs, losses. All of them just as real—and then a third. And a fourth. And a fifth. And more and more and more. The perfect memory, the absolute recall of every Archive that came before you. Five thousand years of them.”
I blinked at that. “Hell’s bells. That would...”
“Drive one insane,” Luccio said. “Yes. And it generally does. There is a reason that the historical record for many soothsayers and oracles presents them as being madwomen. The Pythia, and many, many others, were simply the Archive, using her vast knowledge of the past to build models to predict the most probable future. She was a madwoman—but she was also the Archive.
“As a defense, the Archives began to distance themselves from other human beings, emotionally. They reasoned that if they could stop adding the weight of continuing lifetimes of experience and grief to the already immense burden of carrying so much knowledge, it might better enable them to function. And it did. The Archive keeps its host emotionally remote for a reason—because otherwise the passions and prejudices and hatreds and jealousies of thousands of lifetimes have the potential to distill themselves into a single being.
“Normally, an Archive would have her own lifetime of experience to insulate her against all these other emotions and memories, a baseline to contrast against them.”
I suddenly got it. “But Ivy doesn’t.”
“Ivy doesn’t,” Luccio agreed. “Her grandmother was killed in a freak accident, an automobile crash, I believe. Her mother was a seventeen-year-old girl who was in love, and pregnant. She hated her mother for dying and cursing her to carry the Archive when she wanted to have her own life—and she hated the child for having a lifetime of freedom ahead of her. Ivy’s mother killed herself rather than carry the Archive.”
I started feeling a little sick. “And Ivy knows it.”
“She does. Knows it, feels it. She was born knowing exactly what her mother thought and felt about her."
Please don't sue me for the extensive quote, Mr. Butcher. Why does the Archive tell Harry a different story than Luccio? Is one of them lying to Harry Dresden? Or did you forget what you wrote so many thousand pages ago?
A second thing clashes with an earlier book. When Harry Dresden first encounters a Denarian in Death Masks, it takes all three Knights of the Cross to save his life. It costs the life of one to get Harry out of Nicodemus' clutches alive. This time, he has to face more than a dozen Denarians. There's only Kincaid and the Archive to help him. Harry Dresden not only survives; between them they take down eleven Denarians. Later, Harry and his two knights attack the six strongest Fallen angels. Again Harry Dresden survives - which we expect because he needs to be alive for the next book - and almost strangles Nicodemus. Deirdre runs away at the mere sight of a half-drawn sword. It seems you downsized the Denarians from nigh-invincible nightmares to strong, but manageable monsters. It feels like cheating.
I'm still staying with the series, but I hope those watered-down Denarians don't get much more screentime.

Vampires again, this time the incubus/succubus variety. Ghouls, too. But Harry Dresden has to solve a good old riddle. I was missing those. And the ending is just too good. I'm glad you found a way to help Thomas. Onward to the next book: Small Favor.

In Kapitel 30 erzählen Sie von einer Lokalpolitikerin, die von der Presse zerfleischt wurde wegen des Satzes: "Auch Kinderschänder müssen eine Chance auf Rehabilitierung bekommen." Dann ein kursiver Einschub: Im Jahr 1955 ermordeten zwei weiße Amerikaner einen schwarzen Jungen, weil er es gewagt hatte, ein paar Sätze mit einer weißen Frau zu sprechen, und weil er in seiner Brieftasche ein Foto von einem weißen Mädchen hatte. Die Täter werden freigesprochen. Ende des Einschubs. Wir kehren zurück zur Lokalpolitikerin, die mit ihrem Ehemann davongeht. "Ihre Regenmäntel habe die gleiche Farbe," schreiben Sie, "sie verschwimmen ineinander."
Was, lieber Autor, haben die Politikerin und ihr Ausspruch zu tun mit jenem offensichtlichen Unrecht? Ich brauche eine Weile. Aber Sie haben recht: Ein paar Worte, zur falschen Zeit oder zur falschen Person gesagt, können einen das Leben kosten. Die Täter kommen straflos davon, ob es nun Mörder sind oder ein aufgebrachter Mob.
Sie urteilen nicht, Herr von Schirach. Sie legen Tatsachen dar. Aber was Sie darlegen, kann nur zu einem einzigen Urteil führen. Sie entscheiden, welche Tatsachen auf Ihr Papier kommen. In Kaffee und Zigaretten sind es wenige Geschichten, einige Erinnerungen, viele verpackte Gedanken. So eine Sammlung kann nur veröffentlichen, wer schon einen Namen hat.
Ich hoffe, Sie schreiben noch viele Bücher. Ich möchte von Ihnen lernen.

Jim Butcher: Proven Guilty
Dear Author,
after ghouls and vampires of various flavours, we now get movie monsters. But you give them little screen time. It's almost a pity how fast they go down. More fanservice instead: Harry Dresden must rescue yet another busty girl who got herself into supernatural trouble. No plain or ugly women in your books. Proven Guilty is not the best in the series, but neither is it the worst. Somewhere in the middle.
Charity Carpenter gets upgraded to action girl. She didn't behave like it when we first met her in Grave Peril. But she was ten months pregnant then; that might explain it.
I like how you pulled off the solution ex machina in a way that made it logical in context. Looking forward to the next volume: White Night.

Jim Butcher: Dead Beat
Dear Author,
the wizard who wrote that all-important book knew nothing about German. Die Lied der Erlking, oh my. And Cowl speaks terrible latin. Multilingual bonus everywhere.
Necromancy is a dark and forbidden brand of magic. No wizard of the White Council wants to know anything about it. However, when Harry Dresden needs it, he knows just the spell that will let him ride a T. rex into battle. Rule of cool. But what happened to the dog when Dresden rode off on his dinosaur? With a one-man-polka band no less.
The curse of dying alone would make the victim immortal, wouldn't it? Just make sure to never be alone. I hope this comes up later in the series.
