How Not to Get Lost in the Woods

I read a story the other day about a guy who got lost in the woods and ended up living on a diet of squirrels until his owner found him. Wait, no. That was about a dog. The dog got lost in the woods, and the owner lived on a diet of squirrels till the dog turned up. You know, that doesn’t sound right either. But I guess what I am getting at is this: Getting lost in the woods stinks.

First, it can stink in a literal sense, if there are a bunch of skunks around or something. But it can also stin...

The World Cup Home-Field Advantage

The World Cup is pretty fun because it gives a lot of people who could care less about it something else to pretend to like. I saw a Facebook status of a girl who couldn’t pick a soccer ball out of a line-up that said, “Sad to be stuck in the airport, but pumped to catch some of this Argentina match!!!” Yep, she called it a “match”—a thing only the soccer savvy, Europeans, and the ultimate posers call it.

As a guy born and bred on soccer—my Aussie father saw it as the nearest thing to rugby he...

The Wondrous Artistic Process of the Modern Man

The young man sat down at his computer finally doing the thing he had so long intended to do—write his first novel. He breathed a deep breath of purpose, as if inhaling very destiny itself, and then, with a crack of the knuckles he set about his work.

The work went quickly at first—turning on the computer and adjusting his posture to the keyboard position. But then, after opening up a blank document, things slowed to a sit-still. He fidgeted the silence away.

I’m writing my first book, he thoug...

Mastering the Dinner Party and Winning Friends

Fads come and go, fashion is always changing, but dinner parties are forever. I mean, seriously, haven’t dinner parties been en vogue forever? I bet ancient man had a potluck in order to get to know the new couple who moved into the cave next door. It is just what people do—have their friends and ‘not-yet friends’ over to break bread and break open new, vibrant relationships. Poor people do it; rich people do it. Even kings and presidents have dinner parties.

Dinner parties fascinate me, and i...

Living the Faith: Romans 12:1

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. –Romans 12:1

Romans 12 is an explosively practical chapter which chronicles how the life of the person following Christ ought to be lived. In the coming weeks, we’ll dive into each verse, and have a better understanding how we might, in the here and now, bring honor and worship to God.

That journey begins with Romans 12:1, and a k...

The Sounds of Summer Concert Series – Friday Nights

Nothing says summer like hot weather. But aside from the rising temperatures, another thing that says summer—or at least sings it!—is awesome live music!! Which makes me very excited to present The Sounds of the Summer Concert Series!

This amazing series will take place every Friday night (except for July 4th because the city refuses to push their dumb old firework show to July 5th) on the hill between my house and Hy-Vee. The concert series will feature amazing seasonal originals and covers f...

I WILL NOT TURN ON THE AC BEFORE JUNE, I WILL NOT TURN ON THE AC BEFORE JUNE, I WILL NOT . . . SLEEP

Each Spring the epic battle ensues. It is a climatic war waged in the rustling recesses of the night, brought on through a dogged determinism NOT TO TURN ON THE AIR CONDITIONER.

Maybe you do this too?

Those first few warm days, you rejoice in the sunshine, glorying in the pinkness of your skin. The beauteous days cause your soul to bloom, and you smile and hold your hands out refreshed by the end of a cold, dark winter.

And then night cometh.

You sprawl there awake tossing and turning and sweatin...

Networking or Just Using People?

I remember going to parties in high school and really only caring that the girl I had a crush on was there. I would talk to people that were near her in proximity, and I’d try to project what a great guy I was in the conversation with whatever pawn I was engaging. If the girl would leave that area of the party, so would I–sometimes mid-sentence.

I didn’t care about who I was talking to, they were leverage, nothing more, nothing less. I would use them as long as they benefited my chances of bei...

To Our Beloved Guest

Dearest Sister, Dearest Guest,

We are so delighted you will be staying at our home, and feel absolutely downcast that we cannot be there to entertain you! But even so, we want to extend our sincerest hospitality to you—please feel free to kick your shoes off (provided you are wearing socks. You are wearing socks, right?).

Our deepest fear is that you would enter our humble abode and feel like a guest, Heaven forbid! So we decided to craft a little Welcome List explaining how things work and whe...
