The Good, the Bad, and the In the Meantime

Sometimes I read my scheduled blog posts before posting them. And sometimes when I do this I think, “This is a nice post” or “This will make someone out there smile” or “Way to go, Muse! You fickle, fickle beast!”


Sometimes, though, I don’t think any of these things. Sometimes the post doesn’t make me laugh or cry or smile or really feel anything at all. Then, I begin combing the post for something–anything–I missed: an ill-timed punchline that could be spruced up or a phrase that could be add...

Chewed Out

Things were fine, the day was great


Then stepped in, that oft cruel fate


Quiet and calm, ‘twas a sneaking thing


Aided on by the wearer of a wedding ring



I came home, the workday done


Groggy and tired, evening had begun


My wife was no place to be found


To the kitchen I went, for a Fudge Round



There’s nothing quite like a pre-dinner treat


But an empty Little Debbie box revealed defeat


I thrashed, I cried, I cursed at life

The End of The Office

Tonight my dear old dog gets shot, and I’m pretty excited. Don’t get me wrong, I love old Barkley. I’ve had him for nine years and we’ve been just thick as thieves. Trouble is, a few years ago he lost his eyesight—got all scratched up by a cougar or something. After that he just sort of stumbled around, bumping into things. Sure, occasionally this was funny, but I felt for the old pup and missed his good old days. And now his health is all deteriorated—worms and everything else—and it is just...

How to Live in a Nation that is not “Christian”

The idea that the United States is a Christian nation is ludicrous. If it ever were such a thing—which some historians would have one believe was so—it is now a relic of the past. The morals of this country—exhibited in modern individual expression from womb to tomb—have paganism written all over them.
