Book Review: “this boy is a rainbow: the storm”
Rating: ★★★★★
Pages: 51
Genre: Poetry
Format: E-book
Author: Sam Payne
Brace yourselves for a length book synopsis, but I promise you, it is worth!
Book Synopsis:
“It all began with the storm…
i watched you
pull our fading sun
down from the sky
and carry it away
over the horizon
as it was replaced
with a storm
Sam Payne’s debut poetry collection, this boy is a rainbow, tells a raw and touching story of gay love, heartbreak, healing, and empowerment. It is the story of boy who lost love and thought he would never be whole again. Divided into three chapters, it follows his journey as he endures the storm, finds the sun, and becomes the rainbow.
This is the first part of the collection—the storm—a preview of the full edition, which will feature over 200 new poems and illustrations.
For fans of Rupi Kaur, Amanda Lovelace and Savannah Brown, comes an original collection about love, sexuality, grief, doubt, depression, survival, healing, self-love and empowerment.
You’ll love Sam Payne’s tender love and heartbreak poems. Start reading this bold debut before anyone else does. “
My Review:
This part of the collection is as you expect from the title, it’s full of pain and heartbreak. Personally, I love the fact that the title is intentionally lower-case. It gives it a much more casual, depressed feeling. The poet, Sam, conveys this pain in a very effective way. He is not kidding when he says “for fans of Rupi Kaur”, who is quite known for her brevity in her poetry. Sam’s brevity is excellent, and even in 3 or 5 lines, he can create a vivid imagery, and that’s what made this part work. Even though the collection is a story about him, he does not get stuck in one tone or voice, it variates throughout. As for the genius brevity in his poems, I have gone back and re-read some of my favourite poems, and it was quick read overall.
As stated in the synopsis, this book is 25% of the whole collection, which is more than 200 pages long. This part is permanently FREE on Kindle, and it is a great strategy for Sam to engage new readers. There is no risk in trying out this part of the collection, and he seems confident that people who read this part will want to read the whole collection, which I’m sure is true! I have added the collection to my wishlist. I will be looking forward to reading it after the next 5-6 books I have lined up (if not more!).

Thank you for reading the review! This was my first ‘official’ review on my blog! I would appreciate feedback on what you would want to hear more (or less) of. Would you be interested in reading more book reviews? If yes, would you be interested in poetry books or other types of books (YA, Fantasy, etc.) as well? Let me know in the comments!
If I anyone has read this part or the whole collection, I would love to hear your thought!

Solitude
Engaged in a heated argument,
he rambles on and on
about something
that he read on the news
fifteen minutes ago.
Brushes his teeth frantically,
blood spat out from his inflamed gums,
while his tongue continues
to talk endlessly.
His lips pause
waiting for his lover to agree,
but his ears hear no sound.
As he turns around, realises,
he has been speaking
to a bathroom wall.

Happiness
[image error] Happiness – by Christina Marie Wilmes
After months of rain
and vicious winds,
she opens the door
to take a step
in the now dry world.
From behind the clouds,
the sun has finally emerged,
he stopped hiding.
With bright twinkles in his eyes
he smiles gently while
basking her in warm rays of sunlight,
as she shyly holds her hands
behind her back.
She looks up towards the sun
with a wide grin on her blushing face.
This must be what happiness feels like.

Crocodile Cries
I hear your desperate cries
through the arms splashing
in the lake.
Crocodile skin
breaks against the surface,
you scream louder in panic.
Alarmed, I take a step back
and start to charge
for a dive into the waters.
I am about to save you. I almost leapt.
Before I reach the edge of land,
I remember,
the crocodile skin
belongs to your lower half,
and so I halt, turn my back
abandoning you and your crocodile cries.

Stay
Your Highness,
look at this throne
I bought for you.
Make yourself comfortable
in this mansion
I built for you.
Hanging from the ceiling
dazzling chandeliers,
because our love deserves
a starlit roof.
On you,
I would spend all my money,
I would sell my body and soul.
I hope you decide to stay.

Winter Olympics
Through the window
we watch
snowflakes
prancing around
the frigid air,
landing softly on the ground
like Olympic gymnasts.
The flame of the
wooden logs
in our fireplace
warms us up,
as we snuggle comfortably
on our sofa
watching
the Winter Olympics.

A Begging Sinner
Grazed knees
press against
numbing marble tiles,
my head pushed forcefully to the floor
by a shame more powerful than gravity.
My tongue tying itself in knots,
confessing my sins
hundreds of times,
but you please yourself
watching me suffer
tears streaming
down my humiliated cheeks.
Before you
I remain kneeled
repeatedly begging
for your forgiveness,
as you are the only place
that my soul calls home.
