Break Free
One Monday morning,
I woke up feeling blue;
daily routine awaits.
These blue feelings
overflew,
set to motion wild thoughts
that were unstoppable
like a fast-flowing river.
Called my boss
and told him that I quit;
liberation –
my soul broke free.
My wrists feel strange
without the cold metal shackles;
a couple of steps and I lost balance –
these feet have forgotten how to walk.
I went to lie in a meadow
amongst the flowers,
bees and butterflies;
climbed on a tree
for my eyes to see,
the colourful world
that is calling me.
With just a backpack
weighing down my shoulders,
I set out to travel
from a country to another,
like a butterfly
fluttering between flowers
on a sunny Spring afternoon.
In diverse corners of the earth,
I found scattered pieces of myself;
pieces that I had never looked for.
My gleeful heart is like a fridge magnet,
it finds home in all these foreign places.

Rhythm of Self
Stare at ceiling,
hair spreads on bed sheets
like snakes slithering
on silk ground.
Walls crumble down,
lost within
a duststorm.
Shroud settles, fades;
a flat earth
marked by horizons,
an empty universe
blinking above.
Soothing;
I find peace in solitude.
Stand up,
dancing gently on toes
like poised ballerinas,
gentle breeze blows hair.
In tune with the rhythm
of my beating heart,
the inhales and the exhales;
got my groove back on,
energised, prepared
to take over my life.

Blissful Spring
Pink petals dance
along the breeze,
aroma gently embraces
your soft skin.
Naked,
free from distraction;
an earthly sensation
of a flower in full bloom.
Inhale pure air,
clean your lungs –
blissful peace.
Your moist breath
kisses the roots
which create life.

Wounds
Stained daggers
laying on a shelf –
memories.
Scars are reminders;
hard to notice
when they are placed
on your back.
Touching the blades
that pierced my skin;
re-living pain,
healing begins.

When You’re Gay
When you’re gay
dating is just the same
as if you were straight.
Except,
instead of holding hands,
you walk behind him
to avoid being harassed.
Except,
instead of gazing deeply into his eyes,
you make sure no stranger is staring
before you go in for a kiss.
Except,
instead of enjoying the bliss
in a loving embrace,
you protect yourselves
from the man with bulging eyes
who repeatedly shouts
at the top of his lungs:
“The bible clearly states,
one MAN and one WOMAN!”
Then, you spend the rest
of your evening
calming down your date
who no longer feels safe
being held in your arms.

Fall From Heaven
I stand at the edge of a cliff,
fierce winds messing my unkempt hair;
my body shivering cold;
shivering in sadness.
Towards the skies, I glance,
through the tears in my eyes
I see you – an angel –
your heavenly wings startle me.
My feet stumble on a piece of rock,
without balance, I fall towards sea,
screaming; winds howling in my ears,
ocean’s mouth opens up to swallow.
Gales calm; I open my eyes,
your face blushing
as I am held in your arms;
my heart beats ’cause of you.

Spoken Word Poem #6: For You
I have adapted the poem For You to a spoken word.
For You
For you,
I have walked barefoot
in the scorching sands
of a vast desert.
For you,
I have searched
in musty air
of ancient tombs.
For you,
I have crossed
rivers full of piranhas,
their teeth chomping
upon the sight of a man.
For you,
I have surfed on crowds,
looking for your face
amongst a sea of aliens.
For you,
I sank my heart
in a bucket of truth
that solidifies like cement.
For you,
I gave my last breath;
we shall meet again
in another life.

First Kiss
On a Summer evening
we met; hopped on a bus,
spent an hour standing up –
no seats for the two of us.
We sat on a flat rock
in front of the ocean,
talked for hours, while
the sun set in slow motion.
Four hours of conversation;
we did not see the time fly,
the moon shone upon us
when my lips caught your eye.
You asked my permission
to go in for a kiss,
I nodded, our lips touched;
our tongues melted in bliss.

For you,
I have searched
in musty air
of ancient tombs;
my torch uncovers
insects breeding in the dark,
but where are you,
my brightest gem?
For you,
I have crossed
rivers full of piranhas,
their teeth chomping
upon the sight of a man.
For you,
I have surfed on crowds

Please Hear What I’m Not Saying: A Poetry Anthology on Mental Health (Publishing Announcement)
Yesterday, Isabelle Kenyon has published the anthology Please Hear What I’m Not Saying. She edited poems from 116 poets, including myself. The theme of the poems is mental health and is divided into 8 sections. Isabelle has carefully put a list of Trigger Warnings for each chapter on her site – you can check them out here. In the upcoming weeks, I will be posting a full review of the book as well as share my own poem. For now, I wanted to offer Isabelle a chance to share the news about this project!
P.S. It is already #2 in the Poetry Anthology lists on Amazon.com!
Who is Isabelle Kenyon?
In December, I encountered tens of poets on Twitter. Amongst which was Isabelle Kenyon, who at the moment was in New Zealand. I remember this fact, as she was doing Spoken Word Poetry during her travel, and it is what actually inspired me to do my own Spoken Word Poetry videos. Enough about how I met her, and more about her. So, who is she?
Isabelle Kenyon is a Surrey based poet and a graduate in Theatre: Writing, Directing and Performance from the University of York. She is the author of the poetry anthology, This is not a Spectacle and micro chapbook, The Trees Whispered, published by Origami Poetry Press. She is also the editor of MIND Poetry Anthology ‘Please Hear What I’m Not Saying’. You can read more about Isabelle and see her work at http://www.flyonthewallpoetry.co.uk
Isabelle’s Guest Post
Thank you to Jeremy for letting me guest blog today! I wanted to spread the word about the MIND Poetry Anthology which I have compiled and edited. ‘Please Hear What I’m Not Saying’was released on Thursday, 8th of February, on Amazon. The Anthology consists of poems from 116 poets (if I include myself!) and the book details a whole range of mental health experiences. The profits of the book will be going to UK charity, MIND.
The book came about through my desire to do a collaborative project with other poets and my desire to raise money for a charity desperately seeking donations to cope with the rising need for its work. I received over 600 poems and have narrowed this down to 180.
As an editor, I have not been afraid to shy away from the ugly or the abstract, but I believe that the anthology as a whole is a journey – with each section the perspective changes. I hope that the end of the book reflects the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ for mental health and that the outcome of these last sections expresses positivity and hope.
Thank you, Isabelle
Back to me – Jeremy. I am really happy to have submitted a couple of poems and that one of them is actually featured in this project. As someone who has suffered from depression, mental health is an issue I like to raise awareness on. When my poetry can, not only help people become aware, but also be part of anthology whose profits go to charity – I feel quite accomplished. As I promised, I will be trying to read this anthology within the coming weeks, so that I will be able to give you a full review. It might take me a while if the poems are somewhat too intense emotionally, to which I might need small breaks and go back to reading lighter stuff. Either way, I will do my best to bring you the best review possible as soon as I can.
