The summer is whipping by, and as I’ve been rigorously documenting, so are businesses. This week features some exciting arrivals - largely of the more casual nature, in both offerings and budget - along with the steady increase of chains and expansions. Naturally, that means closures you need to take note of.

Psst. Want the inside track on what’s happening? In addition to subscribing to the TR Newsletter , keep your eyes peeled on the website (the #TRrending section is a good place to start) and follow Toronto Restaurants on Instagram and Facebook for breaking news and updates

BHK Roll - Biryani House Original Kathi Roll - at College Park (444 Yonge St.) is the latest venture by chef Debu Saha (The Biryani House, Debu's Nouvelle Indian Cuisine). Pro tip: In addition to kathi rolls, look to selections such as sandos, biryani, and aromatic mains including Yellow Peas Potato Coconut Ghugni with Puri (2 pcs), Chicken Keema Kaleji (Dhaba Style) with Paratha, and Slow Cooked Lamb Trotters with Yellow Peas and Nihari.

FAB Restaurant Concepts has been rebranding and unveiling various spots lately, all boasting women’s names - first Simona, then Irene, and now Stella’s Kitchen (182 Dupont St.) that replaces their Dupont fixture, The Pour House Pub And Kitchen.

Turquoise Grill House in Woodbridge (9200 Weston Rd., Unit 25-27) is known for everything from starters of Istanbul Mezze Platter and Acili Ezme to Sucuklu Pide and Caucasian Chicken. In the downtown core? Get in on their Turkish fare at their new digs at Spadina and Richmond (431 Richmond St. W.).

Bolton and Vaughan eatery Urban Maharajas lands near Meridian Hall (22 The Esplanade) with all-day Indian eats (Masala Dosa, Kashmiri Lamb Chops), international selections (Avocado Toast, Shakshuka), and array of coffee, cocktails and wine.

The complete overhaul of entire city blocks is at an all-time high. Take Yonge Street, north of Wellesley down to College for example. As I’ve uncovered in part below and in last week’s edition, with more establishments on the way, the fact is the city’s landscape is reshaping at breakneck speed, teeming with new businesses and spaces for rent. Closures, including Michelins, continue at a quick clip too.

And the arrival of the August long weekend denotes Aperol Spritz/patio weather is fleeting, so get out there while you can. Before you know it, it’s all parsnips and turtlenecks.

Momoboyz debuts tomorrow at Victoria Park and Lawrence (1748 Lawrence Ave. E.). On the agenda: Authentic Nepalese fare, thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup - a balm for whatever ails you), and of course, juicy dumplings galore.

After Nobu Toronto sat on my watchlist for eons (Since 2016? Or maybe before? Who can remember that long ago?), it was unbelievably satisfying to finally cross it off my list. Bonus: I got a sneak peek at the exclusive preview Tuesday night. Take a look. Psst. While doors officially open to the public on Tuesday, a soft launch is in effect this long weekend (25 Mercer St.).

Did you know? Michelin destinations are not impervious to closure. In fact, they are shuttering right alongside the swell of businesses that have recently ceased operations. And as I’ve clocked below, there’s no stopping the constant influx of new ventures either. No wonder it’s such a struggle to stay in the know these days.

Fun fact: He’s also known for his ‘za (See: The Fourth Man in the Fire Pizzeria) and addictive desserts (Harry and Heels California Donuts).

Epōs Coffee Bar at Parliament and Gerrard (290 Gerrard St.) is Cabbagetown’s newest addition for brews and baked goods.

Scotty Bons Caribbean Grill has been on a tear lately. Discover their new digs in Markham (4451 Highway 7 E) at Saturday’s grand opening.

Sinjeon Food Sys, now going by Sinjeon Topokki, has been making serious moves since my last check in: After launching in September 2020, Sinjeon Uptown in Thornhill (7051 Yonge St.) has wrapped up service, Sinjeon Topokki & Pocha touched down in Koreatown (712 Bloor St. W.), and ST added Yonge and Finch (5 Byng Ave.) to the roster.

Sushi Mugen’s home base in Leslieville for eons (1105 Queen St. E.) has been cleared out. TR Flashback: Back in my restaurant critic days, I paid a visit to Chef Mugen’s former site on the edge of Leaside. Situated in the midst of an industrial park on Laird, there was little or no indoor seating. Not wanting to chance ruining the great care in which each piece had been made, I dined on a park bench in the outdoor mall across the street. Despite the lacklustre surroundings. it’s one of my fondest food memories and meals.

NEWS

The recent LCBO strike came to an end earlier this week, with stores reopening on Tuesday.

Shouting out celebs when they’re dining around town is so 2017, but I’m making an exception for Antoni Porowski, fellow Canuck and co-host of Queer Eye, as he came into town this week downing All-Dressed and Ketchup chips and was blown away by Imanishi Japanese Kitchen. (As he should be.) I met him when he was in town on his cookbook tour in 2019 and scored a few tried-and-true recipes: Cheesy Lemon-Rosemary Artichoke Dip and Chile-Maple Roasted Chicken.
