This is a story about food, culture, music, love, finding your people and passions, and following your dreams no matter what. Ashley McKay and Aldo Camarena are two of the most inspiring chefs and people I’ve ever met. Steak houses really are taking over the city rn, however you’ll have to wait a little longer for a few, both old and new. Two that were set to open last month have been delayed: Harbour 60 (60 Harbour St.) that was initially slated to launch this past summer, then in the fall, now hopes to open doors in February. And Bisteccheria Sammarco (4 Front St. E.), new sibling to Michelin’s Giulietta and Osteria Giulia was set to launch before Christmas. Stay tuned for opening details.

Traditionally, this time of year would mean a slow down of all things, especially arrivals. However, if you’ve been reading my extensive reporting this last while, my findings below will come as no surprise - it’s the complete opposite with soft launches, grand openings and new options to discover.
The closures appear less than expected for year’s end, simply meaning the uptick in Q1 2025 will be impossible to ignore. In the meantime, get ready for buffet, burlesque and other enticing offerings. And wait ‘til you see what’s on the way…
NO ONE COVERS THE CITY LIKE THIS.
Psst. Want the inside track on what’s happening? Keep your eyes peeled on the website (the #TRrending section is a good place to start), listen to THE TIP OFF , a supplement to my OPEN/CLOSED featuring breaking exclusives, sneak peeks, hot tips + the week’s top stories and events like you’ve never seen - or heard - before in 3 minutes or less on the new TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST , follow Toronto Restaurants on Instagram and Facebook for breaking news and updates , and subscribe to the TR Newsletter .

THE TIP OFF - Edition 3
🎧 Listen to THE TIP OFF, a supplement to my OPEN/CLOSED featuring breaking exclusives, sneak peeks, hot tips + the week’s top stories and events like you’ve never seen - or heard - before in 3 minutes or less on TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST. p.s. While some items may appear in the OPEN/CLOSED, others will be reported here exclusively for the first time. NO ONE COVERS THE CITY LIKE THIS.
THIS JUST IN:
The large space that was formally home to Superfresh - the Asian food hall in the Annex - is now Blanco Cantina (384 Bloor St. W.), a massive Mexican restaurant complete with lots of tequila, tacos, tableside guacamole, and other grub. The expansive outpost is part of a chain from the west coast boasting five locations in Alberta and two in Saskatchewan. Doors open January 13.
Speaking of Mexican restaurants, the old Dominion Hotel on Queen (500 Queen St. E.) is about to welcome Los Gyros, marking the second location for the eatery on Sheppard West known for “100 per cent Mexican Al Pastor meat and variety of tacos, cocktails and more.”
Speaking of hotels, two downtown locations are switching out their restos for different concepts. The Delta Hotel (75 Lower Simcoe St.) has said goodbye to the large capacity SOCO Kitchen + Bar with new ventures slated to launch in their place in March. And one of the W Hotel’s outfits, Public School - a commingling of cafe, bar and restaurant - has shut down to make way for something new. Wild, considering the city's first W Hotel (90 Bloor St. E.) only touched down in Summer ’22.
I’ve been tracking a lot of changes at Queen and Dovercourt lately, including a Michelin (see my ‘No One Covers The City Like This’ post on IG). Introducing your new favourite haunt: Jamil’s Chaat House (1086 Queen St. W.), a former pop-up turned alluring destination by Jalil Bokhari and Emma Tanaka. Grandma Loves You has been in expansion mode lately: In Q1 2024 new shops filled with their signature subs and dawgs debuted in North York and a week later at Yonge & St. Clair. From barbershop to bar. TR Trivia: East Danforth’s sleek new cocktail bar Privilege T.O. (1395 Danforth Ave.) was formerly a salon and barbershop.
ISO Indian and Bangladeshi fare in the east end? Shaad Restaurant, nestled inside a plaza at the corner of Victoria Park and Danforth (Shoppers World Danforth 3003 Danforth Ave., Unit 22), is celebrating its new digs and the holidays big time - with grand opening on Christmas and Boxing Day and specials, to boot: Enjoy 50 per cent off select appetizers and mains.
Shazzy's Fried Chicken in Oakville (2501 Third Line, Unit 21) is doing “100 per cent hand-slaughtered halal chicken” in a variety of ways - pieces, tenders, burgers, wings, wrap, sandwich, nuggets - along with a range of other items including Jalapeño Cheese Poppers, Fish & Chips, milkshakes, abd desserts.
