THE TIP OFF - EDITION 2

THIS JUST IN:

The old Paris Paris on Dundas is about to become Taberna Lx (1161 Dundas St. W..) One of the folks on board? Restaurateur and chef Jonathan Poon of spots around the corner on Ossington Paris Paris, Club Paris, Superpoint, and Favorites. Lx the common abbreviation for Lisbon, hence the tagline, “Lisbon inspired, TO experienced.” There are so many cuisines and concepts I think Toronto could use a lot more of Portuguese is definitely one of them..

Literary bar Famous Last Words (392 Pacific Ave.) in the Junction is closing January 4. The unique cocktail bar launched 8 years ago.

Hey Snowbirds, heading to Miami this winter? Hot tip: MIMI Chinese (265 Davenport Rd.) is bringing its regional Chinese Cuisine to Miami Beach (1575 Alton Rd., Unit 2) this month. p.s. They’re not the first or only to bring their venture south of the border as of late. BarChef (472 Queen St. W.) is opening its first U.S. outpost in NYC.

Hawa Beirut Restaurant & Lounge just landed in the east end near King and Sherbourne (466 Adelaide St. E.), a surprising location for a spot outfitted with DJs, dancing, live entertainment including belly dancing, and definite nightlife vibes. For an “unforgettable experience with shish, cocktails, and the true spirit of Beirut vibes,” head east of Yonge to where Motorino Citta stood until recently.

I told you guys big things were happening on Ossington. BREAKING NEWS: Chef Paul Boehmer’s eponymous restaurant Boehmer (93 Ossington Ave.) has come to an end. While there’s been no official announcement, the website is down and OpenTable has marked it ‘permanently closed’ for starters. The expansive destination transformed from a garage debuted on the strip back in 2010, before Ossington was the bustling strip it is today.

As I predicted, the frenetic pace of Q4 continues. This week I uncovered a staggering 30 establishments - almost a third in closures. The reigning theme? Enticing international eats that won’t break the bank - perfect for this hectic time of year, and happening all over: Scarborough, Mississauga, Oakville, Vaughan, and neighbourhoods across the 6ix.

Psst. Want the inside track on what’s happening? Keep your eyes peeled on the website (the #TRrending section is a good place to start), listen to THE TIP OFF , a supplement to my OPEN/CLOSED featuring breaking exclusives, sneak peeks, hot tips the week’s top stories and events like you’ve never seen - or heard - before in 3 minutes or less on the new TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST , follow Toronto Restaurants on Instagram and Facebook for breaking news and updates , and subscribe to the TR Newsletter .

Here’s the very latest:

OPEN

Al Taco Kitchen in Scarborough (1275 Morningside Ave., Unit 7) isn’t your typical taco joint. On the menu: Authentic halal Mexican dishes and “exotic fusion tacos.”

Head to Bagan Restaurant at Mississauga’s Applewood Plaza (1077 North Service Rd., Unit 11) for an array of aromatic North Indian, Hakka and Nepalese dishes.

Bom Dia Cafe & Bakery brings Portuguese pastel de nata and other baked goods to Greektown (389 Danforth Ave.). Grand opening is Saturday.

Psst. Cafe Namoo in North York (23 Drewry Ave.) is teeming with goodies - everything from croffles to bingsu.

Chiang Mai set up shop at York Mills and Don Mills (860 York Mills Rd. N.) in Me Va Me’s previous digs, marking the fifth location for the local Thai chain.

Industry vet and longtime F&B Director for hotels and luxury resorts around the world Karim Fahmy launched Crack Burger on Saturday with a “smashingly addictive” lineup is in effect. Find it in Kensington Market (147 Baldwin St.) where Kensington’s Caribbean Meat stood.

I gave you the inside scoop on Gul Gul Lebanese & Turkish Cuisine taking over Goodfella’s palatial plot (4411 Hwy 7) last month. Newsflash: Grand opening is happening Sunday with “live BBQ station” and entertainment. Bonus: Enjoy 15 per cent off December 15-22.

Performance and event venues are on the rise. Introducing the latest: International Palace of Joy (1347 Queen St. E.), a multi-hyphenate space in Leslieville home to: cafe during the day, bar at night, barbershop, motorcycle club, and various events, brought to you by PEC’s Sand & Pearl Oyster Bar. Doors open Saturday.

Kelly’s Bake Shoppe, Burlington’s wildly popular vegan bakery since 2012 by mother-daughter duo Kelly Childs and Erinn Weatherbie, has a new sibling. See: Downtown Oakville (259 Lakeshore Rd. E.). Grand opening is Sunday at 11am with lots of free items on offer.

Kraft Tea (754 Broadview Ave.) specializes in bubble tea, as did its predecessor. Details in closures below.

Le Beau Lab’s second croissanterie at the edge of Canary/Distillery District (405 Cherry St.) softly opens on Saturday at 8:30am. Get to know CEO and Executive Pastry Chef Olga Spivak in my long-running chef series, At The Pass.

Big news for Mother India Roti fans: It’s back on Queen in Little Tibet (1422 Queen St. W.)! And another is up and running on St. Clair between Runnymede and Jane (2542 St Clair Ave. W.) where Roti Time was. Did you know? Both are part of the local Maurya Indian Restaurants group celebrating 25 years.

Beauty Obasuyi expands her Nigerian restaurant chain Naija Jollof to the corner of Queen and Bathurst (592 Queen St. W.), operating 24/7.

Mississauga’s Oklahoma Burgers (10 Kingsbridge Garden Cir.) decided downtown Toronto was the ideal spot for their second patty pit stop. Get in on their fried onion smash burgers in a slip of a place across from Roy Thomson Hall (214 King St. W.).

Grand opening for Pho Anh Vu’s striking new Don Mills destination (900 Don Mills Rd., Unit 9) kicks off today. The authentic Vietnamese chain is celebrating with 10 per cent off your entire meal on opening day.

The latest haunt to arrive on the buzzy Ossington strip as of late: Please & Thank You (108 Ossington Ave.). Previously home to Indian Grill, restaurateur Naveen Chakravarti (quick backstory here) revamped the space - think brick-lined walls, open kitchen with counter seating at the back - and focused the menu on global grub - think fried chicken, lobster ceviche.

Raffaella Pizza is the latest concept to join The Annex Hotel (296 Brunswick Ave.). Expect Italian fare - chicken parm and lasagna, in addition to 48-hour fermented sourdough pies.

Sobr Market’s newest n/a bottle shop touches down in swanky Summerhill (1210 Yonge St.). Stay tuned - SM’s also slated to open at Waterworks (50 Brant St.).

Mini doughnuts, cookies, and ice cream are at the heart of World Peace Donuts (993 Bloor St. W.) in Bloorcourt. But wait, there’s more. First: The company started as a clothing brand, so you can simultaneously rep the co. and get cozy. Second: WPD raises money for various causes every month. Third/TR Hot Tip: “Globally-inspired” ice cream flavours include Butter Chicken, Ramen Noodle, Peri Peri, Oxtail, Shawarma, and Canadian classic - Ketchup Chips.

Ever since Clinton’s closed in 2020, it’s been home to ventures including night club, live music venue and event space Club 693, and Korean restaurant and watering hole Bar 693. Say hello to “cyberpunk-inspired bar” Zui Beer Bar (693 Bloor St. W.). p.s. Back in Summer ‘23, I told you about their North York outpost, also outfitted head-to-toe in neon.

% Arabica’s been adding to its Great White North roster this last while. The fourth Canuck coffee shop of the world-renowned brand founded in Kyoto lands right downtown at CF Toronto Eaton Centre (220 Yonge St.). Grand opening is Saturday. Bonus; Be one of the first 100 guests in line and receive a free pastry.

CLOSED

I told you big things were happening on Ossington. Chef Paul Boehmer’s eponymous Boehmer (93 Ossington Ave.) has quietly closed its doors. The expansive restaurant debuted in what was a garage in 2010 - long before the street was the bustling strip it is today.

Chatime arrived at Broadview and Danforth (754 Broadview Ave.) in 2019. Weeks ago, the windows were papered over as the space underwent “renovations,” but as it turns out, it’s another similar style biz. See who’s moved in up top.

Today Marlene Thorne, owner of literary bar Famous Last Words (392 Pacific Ave.) in the Junction shared doors are closing for good January 4, 2025. The unique cocktail bar launched eight years ago.

On Friday Chef Anthony Rose announced last day of service at Fet Zun (252 Dupont St.) is December 22nd. Psst. You’d already be up to speed If you listened to The Tip Off.

That was fast. I just passed by Foodrama Taqueria Bar (592 Queen St. W.) a few weeks ago. The sign still being up is confusing for sure. The one at Queen and University (232A Queen St. W.) was also brief.

The MoMo House expanded to the Danforth (679 Danforth Ave.) last year. As of Sunday December 8, an undated letter posted on the door stated the property “has been secured by Apex Property Management on behalf of the landlord.” The small brand boasting Tibetan and Himalayan restaurants around town by Garab Serdok, also included a branch at Queen and Bathurst (685 Queen St. W.), now closed. With the Parkdale location on the move, that leaves only one MoMo House remaining: Yorkville (1240 Bay St., Unit 107). Over the years, the group of eateries has included similar ventures The Monk Café (now closed) and Tibet Kitchen which is relocating.

I was first to report Italian resto Noce temporarily closed back in October. Their longtime stomping grounds at Queen and Niagara (875 Queen St. W.) have come to an end, while they relocate “nearby soon.” In the meantime, catering services are available and some items are up for sale - a list has been posted to the front window.

Soul Cafe in North York (23 Drewry Ave.) is now home to another coffee concept. Pop up top for details.

NEWS

The GST/HST holiday commences this week. What does that mean for businesses and consumers? A local organization calls it “an administrative nightmare.”

Usually establishments up for sale do whatever they can to keep it on the down low. The Aviary and Longslice Brewery however, took it to the streets on Friday to seek the public’s help. This is just the latest example of how challenging the landscape for hospitality is right now.

Latest food recalls: Choco Max Granola Coated Chewy Bars - Chocolate Chip recalled due to undeclared peanut, MadeGood Granola Bars recalled due to pieces of metal, Certain Oasis Treasures Pistachio Dubai Chocolate recalled due to Salmonella, Consumption of Sareks Bitter Apricot Kernels may cause cyanide poisoning, Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action Travel Mugs recalled due to burn hazard, Various brands of bread and buns recalled due to pieces of metal. [UPDATE: 13.12.24 SunFed field cucumbers and slicer cucumbers recalled due to Salmonella.]

THE TIP OFF - Edition 1

🎧 Listen to THE TIP OFF, a supplement to my OPEN/CLOSED featuring breaking exclusives, sneak peeks, hot tips + the week’s top stories and events like you’ve never seen - or heard - before in 3 minutes or less on TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST.  p.s. While some items may appear in the OPEN/CLOSED, others will be reported here exclusively for the first time. NO ONE COVERS THE CITY LIKE THIS.

THE TIP OFF - EDITION 1

THIS JUST IN:

The restaurant scene these days is wild, isn't it? It's like nothing I've ever seen before. I'm covering over a hundred restaurants a month and it's getting crazier. I've got so much great information and so much is happening so quickly. So I've brought what I used to have in the TR Newsletter, The Tip Off, to the podcast. What I'm going to be doing is bringing you the top stories, breaking news, intel, all my secrets. Well, most of my secrets. So what have we got this week?

First up, Badlands (192 Ossington Ave.) opened Saturday night. I don't know if you know Brook Kavanaugh and Lara Roberts. They're the couple behind their spot next door called Season Six on Ossington. Around the corner, they've got Sprezzatura Spaghetti Disco. And then also on Ossington, they've got Taqueria El Valiente, which is the one downstairs. They really love Ossington. So they've got a cute new Western-themed saloon, which is part of a new wave of restaurants that have touched down on Ossington lately. We've got Andrea's Cookies, Cereal Box Cafe, Chica San Chen, Fallen Feather, Linny's, and No Vacancy. And that's just in the last few weeks and months. Ossington is popping off.

Hot Tip from Oakville: Tatin Bakehouse (2345 Wyecroft Rd., Unit 20) by chef Lili Linda and Sheila Wang debuted on Wednesday. This has been on my watch list for a long time. I wrote about Chef Linda back in 2021 when she and her mom were doing a dried meat concept, She and Sheila have created quite a beautiful and well-crafted place to get baked goods.

Next up, Kensei Bar (1173 Dundas St. W.) , which I was the first to report of celebrity chef David Adjey's modern French restaurant, Bouffe closedo. And then I found out Kensei Bar was coming in and boy, love this concept. It's part listening bar, part restaurant, part cocktail bar on Dundas just around from Ossington. So again, part of the Ossington movement and I'm very excited about the menu.

And then sad news today, Chef Anthony Rose announced that Fet Zun will be closing. Last day of service is December 22nd. It was Bar Begonia for those of you from back in the day.But the good news is that Chef Anthony Rose is still the King of Dupont with his Fat Pasha and Schmaltz Appetizing still on the strip. And we'll have to go and say our goodbyes, but it's not goodbye to Anthony.

And that's just a few of the stories that are happening. The good news is The Tip Off will be coming to you here on the podcast. And then of course, the OPEN/CLOSED which is the most comprehensive resource of restaurant openings, closures, news events, intel, trends, all of those things.

Thanks for listening. Subscribe to TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, and wherever you listen to podcasts.

As you can see by my extensive coverage lately and continued below, there’s unprecedented movement - often times, within the same block or even the same space. As soon as one biz shutters, another is swiftly taking over. In some cases the old signage is still up. And Google is a mess - the amount of establishments marked ‘Temporarily Closed” that have permanently shuttered and/or already cleared out is astonishing. Thus, reporting has become exceedingly complicated, convoluted, and time-consuming, however I believe it’s the only way to not only get a proper picture of the current landscape, but forecast what’s to come.

NO ONE COVERS THE CITY LIKE THIS.

You might know the couple’s other projects all on and around the Ossington Strip: Season Six next door, down the block from last year’s addition Taqueria El Valiente*, and around the corner on Dundas, Sprezzatura Spaghetti Disco. The new western-themed saloon with crokinole and other games in effect - and southern BBQ coming soon - is part of a new wave of restaurants, cafes, bars and bakeries that recently touched down on Ossington including Andrea’s Cookies, Cereal Box Cafe, Chica San Chen, Fallen Father, Linny’s, (as outlined largely in my Oct 10 OPEN/CLOSED) and No Vacancy just a few weeks ago. *Fun facts: This addy was SSD’s original location aaand where Season Six started out. Pattaya City Authentic Thai Cuisine brings an array of aromatic Thai fare to Forest Hill Village (1010 Eglinton Ave. W.).

Speaking of Thai food, Leaside’s Pii Nong travels north to set up their second spot, Pii Nong Thai Eatery & Experience (3321 Yonge St.), the company’s flagship boasting 10,000 sq ft for dining, shopping and massage.

Pitstop Burger at the corner of King and Dufferin (1210 King St. W.) has already earned high praise from customers for their crushable halal smash burgers, poutines, and the like.

Super Bowls extends the açaí bowl trend to Roncy (279 Roncesvalles Ave.). Good bones: It lands where healthy eats were front and centre for neighbourhood staple, The Goods, now shuttered.

I told you all about chef Lili Linda ’s exciting venture in 2021 and I’ve been keeping an eye on her talents ever since. TR Hot Tip: Tatin Bakehouse by chef Linda and Sheila Wang debuted yesterday in Oakville (2345 Wyecroft Rd., Unit 20) with exquisite handmade small batch pastries and baked goods.

Brampton’s Tikka Lounge (7985 Financial Dr., Unit 6A) is known for its traditional Indian Chinese tandoori cuisine. Etobicoke, it’s your turn to get in on the action at Albion and Finch (6200 Finch Ave. W.). Bonus: This location also operates 24/7.

Diavola Pizza made a go of it on a side street at Yonge and Davisville (3 Glebe Rd. E.) for a year, replacing My Roti Place/My Dosa Place that wrapped up service last year. Last day for the Roman-style pizzeria brought to you by next door’s Slayer Burger was October 31. TR Intel: Twinning? Venom Coffee - SB’s coffee shop also situated on a side street (91 Lewis St.) behind their burger joint in Riverside, was “temporarily closed” for months, and now is closed closed.

A Thai eatery has moved into the space occupied until very recently by Luna Thai Kitchen (1010 Eglinton Ave. W.). Details above.

Snakes and Lattes massive board game cafe, bar and resto at Yonge/Eg (45 Eglinton Ave. E.) has come to an end after seven years. Three others locations remain around town: Annex, Little Italy and The Well. TR Memory Lane: Remember when the space was home to Spring Rolls? Lime Rickey’s? Uh, was it also a Hooters?

Sushi & China Garden (2326 Danforth Ave.) debuted during the pandemic.

Third Wave Coffee stuck it out at the corner of King and Church (42 Church St., Unit 2A) for five years before closing as of Monday due to, according to a notice posted on the front of the cafe, issues renewing the lease. It reads in part: “We decided not to extend the lease and relocate our business, after failing to reach, what we believe is, fair and unbiased renewal terms with the landlord. An unforeseen situation that made such a difficult decision easy to make!” Watch this space.

Five years in, Lauren Bailey and Morgan Clamp’s live music, event space, bar - and for a spell, coffee shop, in Parkdale Tonight Bar (1704 Queen St. W.) - aka Today/Tonight for a time - came to a close at the end of November. Clamp made an extraordinary short film about the journey.

Here’s the very latest:

OPEN

This addition to Kensington Market is a big one: Augusta Coffee Bar (229 Augusta Ave.) takes over the corner at Baldwin and Augusta with an array of coffee - natch - and plenty of baked goods, in what Sunwah Fruit Market and El Buen Precio (aka Good Price Grocery) next door (227 Augusta Ave.) called home for what felt like forever.

North York’s Bao House (5336 Yonge St.) just expanded its reach downtown. Head to Dundas east of University (171 Dundas St. W.) for dumplings, dim sum, and noodles.

Chef Matty Matheson’s new restaurant Bar Clams (802 Dundas St. W.) opens tomorrow in Fonda Balam’s former digs at Dundas and Bathurst.* Stay tuned for a closer look. *I gave you the inside track in last week’s OPEN/CLOSED and before that, in an action-packed Instagram post with alllll sorts of intel.

Finer dining in Kensington Market? Head to Casa Morales (152 Augusta Ave.) for elevated Mexican fare in a sleek, spacious setting (Parallel’s brief offshoot Parallel Basta until earlier this year). This marks the most recent venture by the folks behind local chain Gus Tacos and… Wait, there’s one more… Details below…

If you thought the steakhouse trend was over, think again. In fact, the surge downtown is increasing by the day - and in the Financial District in particular. Chop Steakhouse & Bar’s first Toronto location and flagship for the Ontario chain just dropped at the corner of University and Adelaide (181 University Ave.). Promising an “upscale dining experience” and “100 per cent Canadian beef,” the newest steakhouse in FiDi comes complete with two levels, rooftop patio, seating for 430 and much more. Stay tuned for a sneak peek of the 11, 000 sq. ft. space. Doors open to the public Tuesday.

El Gourmet Express (820 Church St.) is serving up a “real taste of Lebanon” until 4am in the heart of downtown. Did you know? The Toronto operation is by way of Pickering’s El Gourmet Lebanese Market (1550 Kingston Rd.).

Greek Street Fusion is happening inside Kitchen Hub’s York site (1121 Castlefield Ave.).

Kensei Bar (1173 Dundas St. W.) has been on my watchlist for a while now. Psst: Grand opening is tonight. What to expect: Japanese tipples and tastes accompanied by soundscapes on vinyl in a retro setting.

A unique fine dining experience inspired by nature awaits you at Yonge and Richmond. See: The Lost Land (146 Yonge St., Unit 101). Keep an eye out for further details. TR Trivia: Do you remember when the addy was home to the Urban Sense store? And waay back in the day - in the early 1900s, in fact - the building held a candy store/ice cream parlour at street level, tea room on the second floor, and dance hall on the third.

La Mooriyya Markette (210 Augusta Ave.) - part grocery store, part pop-up market concept in Kensington Market - welcomed Marry Me Mochi into the fold last month.

Molly Tea’s first store in the 6ix (604 Yonge St.) celebrates grand opening this Saturday and Sunday. The brand specializing in “Oriental jasmine tea” boasts specialty drink series including “snowy whipped” and fresh oat milk.

Mutabak Karak (69 Lebovic Ave.) touched down at a large plaza in Scarborough on Friday with sweet and savoury mutabak, assortment of chapati, karak tea, and desserts - Date Bread Pudding, Yemeni Puffs. This follows MK’s launch in Mississauga (3480 Platinum Dr., Unit 98) last December.

I gave you the inside scoop on Odd Burger’s new joint downtown last month. Update: Doors open today at the corner of Dundas and Church (229 Church St.) with grand opening celebrations happening 12pm-6pm: Ribbon cutting at noon, the first 30 customers receive a swag bag, and soft serve is a buck - with a portion of sales going to Kids Against Hunger, foster-based dog rescue Paws Across the Water, and Plant Based Treaty.

Rumi Turkish Restaurant (1 Old Mill Dr.) does everything from grilled meat and kebabs to pide and kunefe. And surprise: Italian dishes abound including Fettuccine Alfredo and Spaghetti and Meatballs and pizza - Vegetarian, Pepperoni, Margherita, and “White Life” - thanks to Goodfellas’ previous setup.

San Wich (616 Gladstone Ave.), the second concept of late by the people behind Gus Tacos is lot more casual than Casa Morales (Details above.) - This one’s all about comforting Mexican handhelds. Think tortas, tacquitos and… croissandwiches?? For real.

Shake Shack’s first Canadian branch debuted at Yonge and Dundas this past summer, swiftly followed by Union Station (65 Front St. W., Lower Bay St. Corridor), this time with a full bar. Doors open Wednesday at 11am. Stick around for an inside look. Fun fact: There’s an American counterpart to Shake Shack Union Station in Washington, D.C.

Marhkam’s Sushi Umi Omakase Japanese Fine Dining (3621 Highway 7 East, Unit 104-105) launched in 2020. And don’t let the few closures below lead you to believe they’re slowing down. In fact, just the opposite - You’ll see. Closures are convoluted these days and fact-checking takes time - especially when the end of businesses aren’t publicly announced. The more closures, the more stories to tell, the more people to honour.

If a continuation of last week’s cookie frenzy doesn’t make you giddy, you’ve got your pick of experiences and eats in all corners of the city and beyond, and patios are in full effect. In the second week of November? Bring. It. On.

And everyone is trying to get on the Taylor Swift bandwagon including the City (my inbox is bursting with hasty emails, promotions and press releases) and the push for Christmas and New Year’s events are in full force, so if you thought it was busy before, you ain’t see nothin’ yet.

The comings and goings are also out of control: This week alone, I uncovered 31 establishments, nearly half in closures - the majority of which I bet you didn’t see coming.

NO ONE COVERS THE CITY LIKE THIS.

The last night of service at Lime Asian Kitchen, aka Lime on Yonge (3243 Yonge St.), the restaurant “redefining Asian dining one dish at a time,” was Saturday.
