This week offers an exhilarating mélange of cuisines and destinations (including some hidden haunts that won’t stay that way for long), and as always, a litany of continued movement, news and closures to get up to speed on.

Psst. Want the inside track on what’s happening? In addition to subscribing to the TR Newsletter , keep your eyes peeled on the website (the #TRrending section is a good place to start) and follow Toronto Restaurants on Instagram and Facebook for breaking news and updates

Here’s the very latest:

OPEN

Hidden brunch alert: Alma + Gil moved on from Dupont (1543 Dupont St.). Discover the pop-up in Little Italy inside fine dining restaurant, Ficoa (585 College St.).

Drinks, then dinner, then what? If the answer’s dancing, the Fashion District’s new Bodega On King (510 King St. W.) has got you covered.

Hot tip: Crying Tiger (74 Gerrard St. E.) opened this weekend in Plearn Cafe’s recently vacated digs. Stay tuned: The new Thai adventure by the team behind Plearn and Som Tum Jinda, is about to get a sibling: Le Lert.

Further down the road, booze-free cocktail bar and restaurant Free Spirit @ Riverdale Hub awaits in Gerrard India Bazaar (1326 Gerrard St. E.). Inside the social enterprise and green building, find flatbreads, salads and boards for dinner with additional cafe fare available earlier in the day. And while libations may sound intoxicating - Smoked Rosemary Old Fashioned, Spicy Margarita, Espresso Martini - you won’t find a lick of liquor here. Bonus: Staff are paid a living wage, thus no tipping required, and proceeds from the restaurant “help address barriers for equity deserving groups in our communities.”

Chef Jayden Park’s Gateau Ghost, previously a popular pop-up venture (who can forget the Ghost Pops and Madeleine Ice Cream Sandos of Summer ‘23?), moves to a brick-and-mortar model, taking over the stunning space that was Barocco X Nino (947 College St.). Grand opening is Wednesday.

With almost 20 variations, curries are certainly the main attraction at The Grand Indian Dining (507 Queen St. W.), however appetizers, biryanis, tandoor specialities, breads and desserts are strong contenders for tempting tastebuds.

Canada’s west coast has been in on Greta Bar’s fun and games for years, so it’s about time Toronto got a chance. The city’s newest arcade bar put down roots at King and Portland (590 King St. W.). On the agenda: Video games paired with global street fare (think KFC Wings, Birria Grilled Cheese, and Jerk & Dragon Fruit Dry Ribs), tipples, and even bottle service.

Bloordale’s latest addition, Ibet Sushi (1260 Bloor St. W.), offers everything from premium rolls and udon to bento boxes and party trays. Find it where Brock Sandwich once stood.

Persian Cafe Shisha Bar (10711 Yonge St.) in Richmond Hill is the latest spot for shisha, cocktails, kabobs, and live music.

Playa Cabana Bar Esquina (8 Eglinton Ave. E.) is back. Doors reopened Friday, with new menu in effect.

The Purple Bakeshop (780 Burnhamthorpe Rd., Unit 11) - aka your one-stop shop for Filipino desserts - adds another Mississauga outpost to its roster with Erin Mills Town Centre (5100 Erin Mills Pkwy).

Psst, Another secret destination just landed downtown. For the pizzeria hidden inside a hotel, see: Raff’s Pizza at The Annex Hotel (296 Brunswick Ave.).

Turkish and Mediterranean eatery Taksim Döner debuts today in North York (5908 Yonge St.). Grand opening special: Chicken Döner Sandwich and can of pop $6.99. Conditions apply.

9 Mile has been on my watchlist for some time. PSA: The Jamaican restaurant at Bloor and Landsdowne (1334 Bloor St. W.) just celebrated its grand opening.

CLOSED

Alma + GIl left Dupont (1543 Dupont St.), but brunch is still on offer. Details above.

East York’s long-running bakery in Pape Village, Hansen's Danish Pastry Shop (1017 Pape Ave.), has shuttered.

When one nightclub door closes - Juliet (510 King St. W.) - another opens. In the same space even. See openings above for info.

You’ve got until the end of the month to get in your goodbyes at The Oakwood Hardware Food & Drink (337 Oakwood Ave.).

NEWS

Hundreds of workers go on strike at Nestlé's Toronto plant.

A boycott’s brewing against behemoth grocer Loblaw and its other businesses including pharmacies, fashion and beauty brands, and financial services.

Chef Denis Garnoskov has been through it. A GoFundMe campaign has launched to help him reopen his restaurant, Stop.

Speaking of fundraisers, U.S.-based food critic Keith Lee visited Biscuits to Baskets (49 Beatty Rd.) and onsite Backyard Brewed Espresso Bar in Ajax as part of his epic food tour in Toronto and Scarborough last month. Per the “Keith Lee Effect,” people flocked to the property in droves. However, not all were on board with the home-based chocolate shop and cafe operating out of a shed in a backyard. A zoning complaint was filed and the biz is “being forced to move.” A post on their social media reads in part, “…it has come to our attention that our back shed is not a suitable space for business as it’s separate from the main house. This flew right under our radar and had not been addressed to us until now.” Keith Lee approved tees have been created to help raise money for the move, with all proceeds to go towards “the opening of a new home for our business in or near Ajax, Ontario.”

Food recalls: Western Family Yogurt covered pretzels and Milk chocolate covered pretzels recalled due to Salmonella.

Here’s the very latest:

OPEN

Grand opening for Scarborough’s latest hookah bar in Wexford-Maryvale, Dream Lounge (2075 Lawrence Ave. E.), took place yesterday.

Chic Peas Veg has found a home for its celebrated plant-based fare downtown at Toronto International Vegan Marketplace in Kensington Market (210 Augusta Ave.), Saturdays and Sundays 11-7pm.

FoodHall TO (5210 Yonge St.), an “incubator that supports newcomers on their venture to entrepreneurship” is currently home to five ventures: Burro Loco (burritos), Just Curry (curries), Momo and Bao (bao and momos), Spice Island (Caribbean cuisine), and SubG (vegetarian and vegan subs), The food hall replaces previous similar venture, F.L.I.P. Kitchens created by the city, that worked with non-profit caterToronto and showcased vendors including Bad Food, Eastern European style stuffed bun house Bunhaus, Chic Peas Veg (new address above), Da Endz specializing in Jamaican comfort fare, and Middle Eastern fusion eatery Teta’s Kitchen. The former space in North York, according to Naza Hasebenebi, owner of Chic Peas Veg: “abruptly closed on November 8, 2023 without much notice from our landlord (the City of Toronto), leaving us with no choice but to move on.” FoodHallTO’s website currently includes a page for ‘Flip Kitchen.’

Good Neighbour is admittedly sartorially-focused (Featherweight denim just in time for the warm weather? Check. Cute totes for food hauls? A necessity. Stylish sunnies because patios are where you live now? Already in the bag.), however the stores - including the new one in Summerhill (1212 Yonge St.) - are fab places for picking up housewares including French cutlery, colourful tableware, vintage-inspired glassware, cookbooks, and other items you definitely want to gift, and let’s face it, just as likely to purchase for yourself.

Briskly following last week’s launch of French resto La Plume and accompanying Bonne Nuit at The Well, O&B (Oliver & Bonacini Hospitality) continues its frenzy of openings with The Dorset’s debut yesterday next door (453 Wellington St. W.). What to expect: “A taste of the British coast and countryside” with bar on the main floor, dining room nestled upstairs. While this marks the last of three upscale ventures at the new downtown development (See; Aera), the large local hospitality group is far from being done elsewhere in the 6ix. Watch this space.

Milky’s Coffee third outpost (1243 Dundas St. W.) is again filled of striking architecture and detailing, imparting a cocoon of soothing minimalism. Fun fact: This is their second location on Dundas West.

Momo Ghar (568 Parliament St., Lower Level) is relatively new but quickly became a runaway hit (read: waitlist, lineups). Good news: The popular momo destination in Cabbagetown just nabbed a larger layout in the west end in Bloor West Villlage (2392 Bloor St. W.) in what was up until recently, FishInn. On the menu: A variety of dumplings available steamed, pan-fried, deep-fried, and kurkure (breaded). Grand opening takes place Monday.

Palestinian ice cream, cheese and other dairy is at the heart of Anan and Fidaa Zaqa’s Nablus Creamery. Check out their second shop at Ridgeway Plaza in Mississauga (4700 Ridgeway Dr., Unit 69).

Grand opening celebrations for Etobicoke’s new West African restaurant and lounge, Opulent Kitchen (557 Dixon Rd., Unit 131), is happening this Saturday and Sunday.

Hot tip: A new plant-based destination has landed in Kensington Market. Toronto International Vegan Marketplace (208-212 Augusta Ave.), “Toronto's first multi-ethnic vegan space” featuring a weekly Farmers’ Market with local organic farmers and pop-up vendors offering food and snacks, sustainable home goods, clothing, and more.

CLOSED

Bar 244 (244 Adelaide St. W.) got a new look and feel in 2022, thanks to Jasmine Daya, lawyer and owner of Pravda Vodka Bar (briefly renamed Brash & Sassy Vodka Bar). The party spot launched Bar 244 Diner in the space the following year, however doors have officially closed.

Debuting in Kensington Market in 2022, Belgian Sweet Corner - LEKKER! (237 Augusta Ave.) has called it quits. Yesterday’s announcement of closure reads in part: “This decision was not made lightly, and we want to express our sincerest gratitude for your loyal patronage and support over the years.”

After five years, Chocollata Brigadeiros has exited Mississauga’s Square One (100 City Centre Dr.).

That’s it for Golden Bubbles Hong Kong style bubble tea and waffles in Richmond Hill (Canyon Hill Plaza - 11000 Yonge St., Unit D2). Locations remain in Scarborough and Vaughan.

Bad news: One of the OG Gus Tacos (616 Gladstone Ave.) has wrapped up service. Good news: Another remains a jaunt away, with others scattered throughout the city.

Over the weekend Rosalinda Restaurant (133 Richmond St W.) announced it’s closing as of May 3 after nearly six years. Originally opened Summer 2018 by restaurateurs Jamie Cook, Grant van Gameren, and Max Rimaldi, the plant-based destination was later added to the portfolio of one of Toronto’s largest hospitality groups, Oliver & Bonacini - aka O&B.

Saigon Sandwiches arrived in Bloorcourt (675 Lansdowne Ave.) in 2022. Doors shutter tomorrow.

Thirty Six Knots and Cafe landed in Summerhill (1212 Yonge St.) years ago. It’s since moved to an online shopping experience. TR Trivia: The chic space was once home to now closed venture, Atai Bistro.

I introduced you to Yubu a while back. Since then, it’s grown to four locations. Earlier today they shared the College spot (199 College St.) is closing on April 30. The Korean tofu pocket spot is relocating nearby this summer (654 Spadina Ave.), accompanied by more seating and sister co. Guksu.

NEWS

Maurizio Torchia, owner of Lazio Italian Bakery & Deli Ltd., is in urgent need of a kidney.

U.S.-based food TikToker Keith Lee has a whopping 16+M followers on that platform alone, with another 2M on Instagram, so naturally his food tour in Toronto (and Scaborough and Ajax) was the talk of the town this week. Keith Lee’s post on April 5 (below) revealed where he could potentially end up, however none of the eateries made the cut. He tried food from Afro’s Pizza (OPEN/CLOSED readers got the inside track on AP last fall), No. 1 Jerk, Old Nassau, Sahan Restaurant, Sisters & Co., Sumaq Iraqi Charcoal Grill, and backyard biz in Ajax, Biscuits to Baskets, and left some hefty tips along the way.

The solar eclipse was also a big topic this week. While not food-related, it did bring people out to parks and public spaces in droves, many who brought food and drinks and/or ventured to spots nearby for the occasion.

Flying out of Pearson next week? You might want to pack a lunch.

As per usual, there isn’t much of a reprieve from food recalls: Kool Kitchen Veggie Burgers recalled due to undeclared gluten, and Mowi Norwegian Atlantic Salmon - Cold Smoked recalled due to potential presence of dangerous bacteria.

Brace yourself: Almost as many closures (10) lie ahead.

O&B (Oliver & Bonacini Hospitality), one of the city’s largest restaurant groups, has really kept me hopping this last while - five openings in five months - and they’re not done yet. The activity continues with La Plume. Doors open today, at where else these days - The Well (453 Wellington St. W.). The brasserie specializes in southern French fare. Here, that includes a tartare bar, selection of steak frites, and whole bird “rotisserie program.” Psst. The interior by Solid Design Creative includes a washroom stall that leads to “boudoir-inspired speakeasy” Bonne Nuit.

Hot tip: A new destination for lobster rolls, fish and chips, seafood boils and other aquatic treats just landed in Thornhill. See: Lobster Boil Seafood House (180 Steeles Ave. W.).

ISO Lanzhou beef noodles in the downtown core? Moolan Noodles softly opened at Yonge and Gerrard (374A Yonge St.). Did you know? The addy has been home to a number of Asian ventures, including: Jeneral’s in 2022, Mogouyan Hand Pulled Noodles also in 2022, and holding court for a number years prior to the pandemic. Hot Star Large Fried Chicken.

Pat’s Jamaican Jerk (1030 Bloor St. W.) moved into Butter Chicken Roti’s former stomping grounds in Bloorcourt. On the menu: Jerk chicken, patties, and other good stuff your life could use right now.

Pearl Chinese Cuisine’s long-running Bayview haunt has new digs. Luckily the new outpost (291 York Mills Rd.) isn’t far from the previous one. Pearl Harbourfront Chinese Cuisine Group launched their second venue at Bayview Village in 2011. The local chain currently has five locations boasting authentic Chinese fare including dim sum.

Today marks Ricky + Olivia’s grand opening in Leslieville (996 Queen St. E.). Focused on partnerships and pop-ups since 2018, long-time duo chefs Olivia Simpson and Ricky Casipe have transformed Wayla Bar into their first restaurant offering R+O’s signature style of casual eats with elevated ingredients and techniques.

It turns out Scotty Bons Caribbean Grill’s expansion in Scarborough a few months back, was just the beginning. Check out their recent addition in West Hill at Morningside (4502 Kingston Rd.).

Soup in Casserole lands right at the corner of Yonge and Finch (3 Finch Ave. E.), complete with warming bowls of soups and stews

Twilight Cafe added to its porfolio in 2022 and continues the momentum with a third boardgame cafe and brunch spot, this time in North York (16 Park Home Ave.), just south of the eatery above.

CLOSED

“Avengers-themed” homemade burgers were the focus of Scarborough’s Avengers Burger (1189 Brimley Rd.) that debuted during the pandemic.

Beachcombers (1980 Queen St. E.) arrived in the Beaches in 2022, replacing 2020’s Riptide Beach Pub. Stay tuned: Tiarrés Brunch ‘N Cakes (formerly Sophie’s Kitchen) is on the way.

The Black Bull Tavern (298 Queen St. W.) was in business for nearly 200 years, serving brews and bites since 1833. Doors closed yesterday.

Chachu's Pakistani fusion fare was available in York (1708 Eglinton Ave. W.) and Queen and Parliament (179 Parliament St.) for a brief time. It also occupied part of Avengers Burgers fairly recently. Locations remain on the Danforth, in North York and Ajax.

This week Fahrenheit Coffee announced their Leslieville cafe located at Omnia Coffee Roasters inside Flying Squirrel Motorcycle Co. (1347 Queen St E.) will be closing at the end of the month. (OCR however, is staying put), but their message includes a glimmer of hope they’ll continue elsewhere: “Stay tuned for some exciting news!”

Speaking of coffeeshops, HotBlack Coffee’s newest cafe in The Andore House (15 Charles St. E.) is suddenly shuttering. Earlier today, the T-dot chain announced Sunday is the last day. The post reads in part: “ It was a sudden decision and it is with heavy hearted that we did not have enough time to properly say good-bye to our regular customers of this location.”

On the heels of a recent closure, another Playa Cabana has wrapped things up. Playa Cabana Bar Esquina (8 Eglinton Ave. E., Mezzanine Level) arrived at the height of the pandemic at a corner that has been under construction on and off for years.

The Yorkville location of Pusateri's Fine Foods (57 Yorkville Ave.), the store’s second, has come to a close after 20 years. The upscale grocer continues with three locations - Avenue Rd., Bayview Village, Eaton Centre - and one on the way in Little Italy (899 College St.).

The Greek streak at Dundas and Bathurst has come to an end with the recent shuttering of Souvlaki Plus Burgers (761 Dundas St. W.), previously home to Gyro Bar Souvlaki Kitchen (aka Gyro Bar Greek Kitchen). Next up: Shawarma, courtesy of Felfel Mediterranean Cuisine.

NEWS

The folks at Rodney’s Oyster House (469 King St. W.) are asking for your help for a “longstanding member of the Rodneys crew at the original location on Adelaide Street.” A GoFundMe has been set up to help with living expenses for James Duthie who has been unable to work for more than a year while waiting on a double lung transplant.

OPEN

Cafe Landwer’s Forest Hill Village digs (383 Spadina Rd.) have been on my watchlist for some time now. Good news: Doors are finally open. Bonus: CL’s grub is also available at Kitchen Hub Food Hall Maple that arrived last month, alongside other eateries including Mandy’s Salads, PAI, Wingstop, and 3 Brothers Pizza.

Salad lovers rejoice. The third Chop Hop has landed near Yonge and Richmond (4 Temperance St.), just in time for warmer temps.

The Heritage Cafe & Kitchen (368 Queen St. E.) is serving up shawarma, wraps and kebabs at Queen and Parliament in the space where Lime Sushi stood.

Adam Ward and Sasha Warunkiewicz’s Hooray for Pizza Day kicked off yesterday inside Comedy Bar’s Danforth location (2800 Danforth Ave.).

Vietnamese fare is the name of the game at Moc Brunch & Bistro (209 Dundas St. W.), the latest concept to move into the bustling space at Dundas and University.

Swiftly following an addition at King and Spadina, Neo Coffee Bar soft launched in the Financial District (PATH, Exchange Tower 130 King St. W., Unit CS12A) on Monday.

Pigeon Café & Bar’s second outpost in the 6ix just touched down at Brookfield Place (181 Bay St.). Did you know? The Montreal brunch chain with the “world’s worst coffee” debuted in the Entertainment District (337 King St. W.) last summer.

Costa Rican food is the name of the game at Pura Vida Restaurant (750 St Clair Ave. W.) in Nama Sushi’s former digs.

Just a few doors over, discover “Toronto's first subsidized, pay-what-you-can and pay-it-forward“ soup joint, Soup Bar (766 St. Clair Ave. W.), the latest charitable venture by chef Jagger Gordon’s Feed it Forward (766 St. Clair Ave. W.).

I gave you the lowdown on incoming Spuntini Street Eats (514 Annette St.) last month. Update: SSE’s pizza, pasta, oven-baked sandwiches and other Italian fare can now be yours.

Hot tip: Mark your calendar. Find Tapow! doling out Hokkien mee - aka black Malayasian noodles - at Dipped Donuts (161 Baldwin St.) Thursdays 11am-7pm. Fun fact: Baldwin Village was home to an authentic Malayasian restaurant (Matahari Bar & Grill) for years.

Taqueria El Pastorcito (1160 Bloor St. W.), Bloordale’s newest arrival, comes complete with tacos, burritos and quesadillas.

Taverna Yiannis Greek Grill and Pub has been in the works at Yonge & Lawrence for a while now. Head to 3185 Yonge St. to get in on fragrant fare including Kolokithokeftedes, Tirokafteri, Saganaki, Calarmari, Greek Lemon Chicken, Moussaka and Ribeye Steak.

The cafe at Youthful Vengeance at Dundas and Ossington (1110 Dundas St W.) is now in full effect, so whether you’re checking out the indie gallery’s fab artists and shows or hanging out at the popular haunt/work space (I’ve never seen so many LaCie rugged hard drives in one space outside of an agency), coffee, tea and snacks are on offer.

CLOSED

Joint ventures KK Eatery with its Italian fusion, and Indonesian Jakarta street food concept Ona Noodle, took over East Chinatown stalwart Simon's Wok Vegetarian Kitchen (797 Gerrard St. E.) last year.

Grand opening for Tacos Baby J (371 Roncesvalles Ave.) was last June.

Sumac Grill’s next door neighbour 68°C Stone + Grill (285 Dundas St. W.) was a recent arrival, launching at the end of October. The restaurant once named Stone N Steak called it quits less than four months later.

Zakkushi on Queen (620 Queen St. W.) has shuttered. A notice dated February 15 2024 to terminate for failure of tenant to pay rent arrears is posted on the front door. To the left of the notice, a letter also dated February 15 2024 from Zakkushi is also posted, that reads in part that this location “operated as a franchise, and unfortunately faced contractual breaches leading to disputes with the landlord, ultimately resulting in its closure. We deeply regret the circumstances that led to this outcome and apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers.” Customers can still get in on Zakkushi’s Japanese charcoal grilled fare at the Cabbagetown location (193 Carlton St.).
