Following the arrival of the inaugural Toronto Michelin Guide last year, contenders for the 2023 roster have been hotly debated by industry and restaurant-goers alike.
Earlier today, the fine dining compendium announced 12 additions to this year’s lineup, 49 days ahead of the official announcement in September. According to the news release, this is “to help food lovers enjoy new discoveries before the full selection is revealed.” Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides, adds, “By revealing some of the new additions made by our inspectors throughout the year, we enhance our digital tools to further strengthen the ties that bind us to food lovers. We hope that these regular revelations and updates to the selection throughout the year will provide opportunities to highlight the profession and invite everyone to discover and support the restaurants around them.”
The new selections span from scratch made diner fare to Toronto’s first kappo-style restaurant launched less than eight months ago.

Can you keep a secret? The city’s latest speakeasy, Bar 404 kicks off Saturday at King and John (85 John St.).
TR Newsletter subscibers already know: A renowned restaurant established over 40 years ago is making its long-awaited return. Long story short: Founded in ’81, Big Slice doled out ‘za ‘till the wee hours at Yonge and Gerrard until what else, condo development, forced closure May 30, 2016. Their 35+ year outpost in Corso Italia (1154 St. Clair Ave. W.) shuttered in May 2021 and was slated to relocate nearby shortly after. After being inundated with reopening queries, updates were posted to the website. First, “Valued Customers, We are searching diligently for an ideal location where we can resume cooking for you! Thanks for your continued patience,” and later, “to OUR Dear Diners! Covid hit us hard... We're searching diligently for a new, ideal location to start cooking for you again! Thank you for your continued patience and wish us luck!” After a two-year absence, I’m happy to report the beloved pizzeria is finally making a return, this time as Big Slice Kitchen at Dundas and Islington (4748 Dundas St. W.), and doors are now open. On the menu: All the classics including spaghetti and meatballs, personal pizzas, parmigiana suppers, cutlet sandos, salads, and homemade tiramisu.
Black Pot Restaurant and Lounge (804 Danforth Ave.) moved into the recently vacated Green Earth Vegan Cuisine at Pape and Danforth with a melange of Middle Eastern classics (Muhammara, Makanek, Shish Tawouk) and collection of global fare including French (Cordon Bleu, Shrimps ‘Provincial’), Mexican (Tacos al Pastor), Italian (Arrabbiata, Penne Pesto) and American selections (Caesar Salad, Wings, Philly Steak, Cheeseburger).
Richmond Hill’s Chillax & Co. (9580 Yonge St., Unit 101) boasts sophisticated starters (Foie Gras & Chicken Liver Parfait, White Wine PEI Mussels), creamy soups (Wild Mushroom, Clam Chowder), and entrees that run the gamut of Gochujang Fried Chicken Brioche to 10oz New York Striploin for dinner. Brunch offerings include everything from eggs benny and waffles to tacos and salads.
The Chulo (394 Bloor St. W., Unit 102) brings Himalayan fare to The Annex. Think time-honoured Nepali dishes bursting with Indian flavours. Dig into street food faves of Majja Ko Chatpate Chana and Roadside Sausage alongside hearty momos, mains and thalis. As for the name? It refers to the traditional wood-fired mud stove found in rural areas of Nepal.
Hot tip: Head to Thornhill’s new Gyu’s Bake Lab (7181 Yonge St., Unit 300), “Toronto’s first-ever bakery specializing in salted butter bread.”
Pubs are few and far between in sections of the east end. The J Arthur at Gerrard and Jones (1044 Gerrard St. E.) fills the gap with pub grub, bevvies and retro pinball machines.
Just Punjabi and Rollz n Momoz are the latest ghost kitchen concepts at Keele and St. Clair cooked up by chef Aman Khulla out of Junction Food Co. (545 Keele St.).
Seeking an “unparalleled nightlife experience in Canada?” Kings & Queens Resto Lounge (19 Church St.) claims it’s for you. The addy has been home to many bars and lounges over the years including the Foundation Room back in the day, D.W. Alexander for a while , and most recently DSB Bar & Restaurant.
Koi Japan Sushi (281 Augusta Ave.) in the heart of Kensington Market focuses on inari sushi - aka stuffed tofu pockets. À la carte selections include everything from to Cheesy Crab to ‘Stamina Unagi.’ Can’t decide? Try Chef’s Choice (13 pcs/$45, 26 pcs/$88).
Grand opening for Liberty Pizzeria’s new digs in Regent Park (657 Dundas St. E) took place Tuesday.
Mekan Toronto (817 Queen St. W.) is part restaurant, part live music venue. Doors open tomorrow, with festivities happening all weekend long.
From taco kits to churro mix, Mount Pleasant Village’s new Mi Amor - Mexican Store (615 Mt Pleasant Rd.) is your one-stop shop for making superb Mexican meals.
The Monk Café has been in the works for years. The latest project by Garab Serdak, owner of Tibet Kitchen and The MoMo House, launched the Tibetan cafe in his long-running stomping grounds of Little Tibet in Parkdale (1390 Queen St. W.), mere months after The Momo House touched down in the east end.
Head to 3A Noodle’s third outpost in North York (3875 Don Mills Rd.) for an array of lo mein, noodle soup, rice dishes, and “beef internal delicacies.”
CLOSED
Nia Bangala’s Congo Coffee & Toronto Beignets at the edge of Cabbagetown and Regent Park (298 Gerrard St. E.) debuted during the pandemic and quickly became a popular destination, but has been closed due to “renovations” for some time. On Friday, in an emotionally raw post on social, she shared she lost the tiny Congolese coffee house and is facing a legal battle “head-on,” but will be revealing a “new journey” soon. In Summer 2022, she announced the company had raised “$7 million in pre-seed funding from Pittsford, New York Angel investors group.” In 2019, the biz went by the name Congo Coffee and Mikate House and was housed in a teeny haunt (11 Gould St.) across from Toronto Metropolitan University, then known as Ryerson University.
The establishment that moved into Kensington Sushi Market’s spot (281 Augusta Ave.) serves Japanese fare of a particular kind. Details above.
CHANGES

Toronto launches ‘Alcohol in Parks’ pilot program
🕘 3 min read
Pop. Fizz. Clink. Consuming alcoholic beverages in select Toronto parks is permitted for a limited time, thanks to a new pilot program launched by the city.
From August 2 until October 9 2023, people aged 19 years and above can bring and enjoy alcoholic beverages in 27 select parks across the city as part of a new Alcohol in Parks Pilot Program, as a result of an idea formally pitched to government officials last year, and the 2019 Budget - when the Province of Ontario announced amendments to the Liquor Licence and Control Act to “permit municipal Councils to change bylaws to designate public places, including parks, for personal alcohol consumption.”
The process
The motion “Enjoying a Drink Outdoors: Providing Safe, Responsible and Equitable Options for All,” was brought forward last year by Josh Matlow, Councillor for Ward 12, Toronto—St. Paul's (and 2023 Mayoral Candidate), and seconded by Councillor for Ward 7, Humber River–Black Creek, Anthony Perruzza.
City Council voted in support of the motion on May 12, 2023. Staff were instructed to develop a pilot program set to launch for Summer and Fall 2023 and asked to consult “interested Councillors on hosting a pilot park in their ward, provide Councillors with a list of parks most suited for the pilot and report back in July with a recommended approach, including required bylaw amendments.”
On July 6, 2023, City of Toronto’s Economic and Community Development Committee considered the pilot program to allow drinking in 20 parks, “confirmed in consultation with local Councillors.” Later in the month, it was approved in 27 parks across the city, selected based on a number of criteria including park size, access to washrooms, and not neighbouring any school.
Shelley Carroll, Chair of the Economic and Community Development Committee, and Councillor for Ward 17, Don Valley North, said via news release, “I’m pleased that local Councillors have opted-in a broad range of parks in 12 wards across the city to participate in this sensible pilot to allow alcohol in parks this summer and fall. My thanks to City staff who have prepared this public health-informed approach and are ready to monitor and evaluate this pilot with added attention.”
Pilot project signage displayed at one of the designated parks, Riverdale Park East.

• Do not supply or serve alcohol to people under the legal drinking age of 19 years
• Drink only within the pilot parks and between park hours - 5:30am to 12midnight
• Dispose of empty bottles, cans and cups in a park recycling bin or remove off-site (Beverage container recycling bins have been installed in pilot parks, collection in larger high-traffic pilot parks will take place in the early mornings to ensure the safety of park users, and the public is encouraged to report any overflowing bins to 311)
• Be respectful of and do not disturb other park users - Public intoxication and disruptive behaviour including public urination are not allowed
• Alcohol may not be consumed within two metres of playgrounds, wading pools, splash pads or skateboard parks, or inside the gates of an outdoor swimming pool or deck.
For both pilot and non-pilot parks, park users will be expected to follow all applicable legislation, including:
• Park users must comply with the provincial Liquor Licence and Control Act, 2019
• Alcohol consumption is not permitted in non-pilot parks.
Note: All park events where alcohol will be sold or served to the public still require a City of Toronto Special Event permit and a permit/license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).
Did you know?
Toronto is the first Ontario municipality to introduce a pilot program like this since the Province authorized municipalities to designate public spaces for personal alcohol consumption. Alberta and British Columbia launched similar pilot programs in select cities in 2020 and 2021. Based on the positive results of these programs, most cities have extended pilots or transitioned to permanent programs, including Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Note: All pilot programs involved a small number of parks; no city conducted a pilot involving all the parks in the municipality.

As the month draws to a close and vacays ramp up, you might expect the recent resto madness to dwindle. The week’s 20 arrivals and notable closures prove otherwise.
Here’s the very latest:
OPEN
Hot tip: Reservations are required at city’s latest hidden destination, Aitch (461 King St. W.). The subterranean lounge by new kid in the Fashion District Silent H - the Mexican restaurant directly above, is open Fridays and Saturdays.
The menu at Acropolis Gyro Corner (1004 Kingston Rd.) in the Upper Beaches extends beyond the titular item of seasoned meat wrapped in a warm pita, with a selection of souvlaki, burgers, salads, and dips.
Bao and billiards? Bao Babies tucked inside Markham’s Le Cue Lounge (8901 Woodbine Ave.) is one helluva fun concept. Grand opening is tomorrow.
Basil Box brings healthyish Asian bowls and boxes to Toronto General Hospital (200 Elizabeth St.).
The inaugural Crumbl Cookies in the province kicks off at Heartland Town Centre (5985 Rodeo Drive, Unit 1A) tomorrow at 8am. Choose from a weekly rotating menu of “120 dessert-inspired flavours” (Classic Pink Sugar, Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunk, Coconut Lime, Banana Bread, Chocolate Milk) and watch them being made on-site in the open “tech-driven” kitchen. The American chain, founded by cousins Jason McGowan and Sawyer Hemsley, launched in Utah in 2017, growing to over 800 bakeries in 50 states to date. The first Canadian outpost debuted in Edmonton Spring ‘23.
Ehwa Uptown has softly opened at Yonge and Sheppard (4866 Yonge St.) with a ‘Night’ menu dropping soon. Think Fried Chicken Gizzard, Sweet Potato Pizza, and array of tteokbokki and Korean pancakes. For those downtown, the original location of the Korean eatery is just south of Bloor (16 Isabella St.).
Hot appetizers, maki, sashimi, oshizushi, donburi, and lunch specials are just some of the offerings at Leaside’s new Jyugoya Japanese Restaurant (1528 Bayview Ave.). The space was transformed following the recent closure of previous occupant of 35 years, Big Man’s Pizza, and 2020 addition, Kissing Bun.
The Kingston House (676 Kingston Rd.) offers crowd pleasers (KH Burger, Fish N’ Chips, Flat Iron Steak) alongside playful twists on classics (Short Rib Mac & Cheese, Mushroom or Tandoori Fried Chicken, Coconut Onion Rings) in a spacious oasis. It was formerly neighbourhood haunt The Grover Pub, one of the many closures at the end of last year.
In May 2022 I broke the news: After 20 years, celebrity chef Susur Lee was shuttering his eponymous flagship (601 King St. W.) to relocate to new digs in 2023. Lee Restaurant opened Tuesday in a new standalone space in the Waterworks building (497 Richmond St. W.) with signature dishes including Cheeseburger Spring Rolls and Singapore Style Slaw in tow, as promised. p.s. If you subscribed to the TR Newsletter, you’d already know.
Et voilà. Lucie just launched at Yonge and King (100 Yonge St.). The fine dining restaurant at the edge of the Financial District by veteran restaurateur Yannick Bigourdan (The Carbon Bar, Union Chicken, amongst many) is named in honour of his grandmother. Le menu? Award-winning executive chef Arnaud Bloquel and his team are whipping up French cuisine with a contemporary twist in the space formerly upscale destination, Cru. Naturally, TR Newsletter subscribers got the scoop.
Grand opening for West African and continental restaurant and lounge Maison Tribe at Yonge and St. Clair (44 St Clair Ave. E.) takes place tomorrow.
Psst. Maxime’s debuted Monday. The new steak and seafood venture quietly moved into what was very recently Shook Kitchen at King and Portland (77 Portland St.), both by Scale Hospitality Group - the folks behind hotspots such as Toronto Beach Club, and string of new arrivals including AP, Miss Likklemore's, and The Pearl. And yep, TR Newsletter subscribers are already on it.
One of Greektown’s popular destinations is now bigger and better. The lineups at Mezes (440 Danforth Ave.) were just a part of life, but that should be a thing of the past with the stunning, sweeping new destination a few steps away in what was once Pappas Grill. After a long wait - the project began back in 2021 - the new restaurant, complete with apothiki at front and expansive patio on the side - welcomes guests as of August 1. Bonus: The original location is open takeout.
Fish n’ chip shops are too few and far in between. Oakville Fish & Chips’s new location (1395 Abbeywood Dr., Unit 15) helps close the gap one fish n’ fry at a time.
Flights and falafels? It’s officially a thing, thanks to the addition of Osmow’s at Toronto Pearson Airport (6301 Silver Dart Dr.). Find the Middle Eastern chain in Terminal 1 in the domestic, post-security area.
Simply Social (89 Roncesvalles Ave.) in Roncesvalles Village is part market, kitchen and cafe, and all gluten-free.
ISO of an eatery open around the clock? T.O. Dickens Restaurant in Kensington Market (276 Augusta Ave.) operates 24/7 offering everything from with full breakfast to late night snacks, with options from across the globe. We’re talking poutine, spring rolls, steak, pasta, salads (labelled ‘clutters’), and sandwiches. It replaces a recently vacated comedy club.
Opening night for Trap City Lounge (5235 Steeles Ave. W.) is tomorrow. What to expect at the newly built venue at Weston Rd. and Steeles? According to TCL: “ Nightlife reimagined and redefined.”
Pizza and pasta are the name of the game at Leslieville’s new Tulia Osteria (1402 Queen St. E.), brought you by Aidan Hospitality - the group behind Folly Brewpub, Grace O’Malley’s, and Prohibition Social House in Toronto, and Beacon Social House and Ce Soir Brasserie Bar in Oakville. Did you know? It took over another pizza/pasta joint - Queen Margherita’s first location, shuttered at the end of last year, slated to be relocating in the area.
% Arabica, known for its Kyoto coffee and cool minimalist aesthetic, debuted at Union Station yesterday. Take a peek inside the stunning space designed by Tacklebox Architecture and renowned architect Jeremy Barbour. Entering the Canadian market late last year with a flagship at Yorkdale, the Japanese brand boasts 155 stores across the globe.
CLOSED
El Almacen has closed its to-go cafe (1720 Queen St. W.) to focus on their new brunch spot, El Almacen Yerba Mate Cafe (1917 Weston Rd.) that opened in York last year. Insider tip: Stay tuned. The space is set to reopen next monthas the RAID Gallery Cafe, with many of the same favourite offerings as well as number of new menu items.
This is your final chance to get in on schnitzel, cabbage rolls and goulash at Country Style Hungarian Restaurant (450 Bloor St. W.). Doors close on August 1.
You heard it here first: Mandy’s Bistro (123 Danforth Ave.) is transforming once again. Stay tuned for Epochal Imp.
Shook Kitchen (77 Portland St.) started life as Shook Israeli Kitchen in Summer 2019. After temporarily closing due to a kitchen fire that September, the vegetarian Middle Eastern kitchen, café, and marketplace reopened December 2020. For what’s taken it’s place, see above.
You’ve got until Saturday to get in your goodbyes at Scarborough’s Sun Valley Market (468 Danforth Rd.).
Piano lounge/restaurant Wedlocks (1961 Queen St. E.) was a recent addition to The Beaches.

The summer is whizzing by. Accelerating that feeling - the velocity in which establishments are setting up shop and shutting down. Case in point: This week’s 17 arrivals, featuring a slew of expansions by people and places you know, and fascinating fare that’s sure to blow up on social as soon as word gets out.
Here’s the very latest:

The French American bistro and cocktail bar debuted Tuesday and is sure to be a hotspot - the project is courtesy of Bar Poet across the street. *TR Newsletter subscribers got the scoop. Don’t miss out. You won’t believe what’s coming next.
Chinatown’s Banbudian Bistro (261 Spadina Ave.) offers an extensive menu featuring everything from Kung Pao Chicken and Mapo Tofu to a range of offal (Stir-Fried Ox Throat with picked pepper and celery, Fried Pig Brain with minced pork and tofu in secret sauce) and even amphibians (Marinated Bullfrog W/ Pickled Pepper in Spicy Soup). After closing their shop on St. Clair back in 2021, Lion Coffee softly opened Monday - just down the street (140 Westmount Ave.).
Grocery shopping has become such a chore. Head to Heather Saunders and Enzo Campisi’s new Italian market Mercato Sociale (257 Lakeshore Rd. E.) in downtown Oakville to liven up mealtime with pantry essentials and prepared meals to go - fresh pasta and gourmet Italian cheese for one night, pizza and calzones another, for example. It’s across the road from Borgo Antico Cucina Bar, Enzo’s fist restaurant with partners Aldo Campisi (brother) and Tino Bianchi (cousin and owner of Queen Street’s Nuit Social - est. 2014 and closed during the pandemic in 2022).
New restaurant and sake bar Mhel at Bloor and Dufferin (276 Havelock Ave.) specializes in dishes founded on Korean banchan and Japanese obanzai, made with seasonal and local ingredients, served alongside a selection of Japanese rice wine. It takes over where Orote stood until recently.

The former Iron Chef Thailand calls this way of cooking, “Thai ARTisan’s Gastronomy.” Soft opening takes place tomorrow. The space was formerly home to The Big Slice.

Approximately one year ago, Greenwood Smokehouse (673 Danforth Ave.) temporarily closed due to fire. Denise Soueidan-O'Leary’s purpose driven social enterprise The Landsdowne Cone in Regent Park (555 Dundas St. E.) – aka “A Scoop of Ice Cream, a Heap of Empowerment!” – was one of the most popular destinations in the neighbourhood, and not solely due to the dessert on hand either. It was a space that created jobs and training to youth with social and developmental barriers to employment that may not have found work elsewhere. Doors opened four months later with eight enterprises under one roof: Auntie’s Supply, Bao Bird, Bar Superfresh, Big Beef Bowl, The Good Goods, Jajan, Katsupan, and Ssam Cha. The vendor roster changed a few times throughout its short stint and Kim Ng, owner of The Good Goods, shared in a candid newsletter less than a month after opening there, the initial buzz for the dining hall had waned. Approximately one year ago, Greenwood Smokehouse (673 Danforth Ave.) temporarily closed due to fire. The popular barbecue restaurant debuted at Pape and Danforth in 2014 under then owner/pitmaster Warren DeSimone.

The parlour has temporarily closed while seeking new locations and partnerships.

Following the sudden closure of The Annex Food Hall in January ‘22, James Lee, chef Trevor Lui, Jae Pak and Dave Choi announced their Asian food hall Superfresh (384 Bloor St. W.) featuring Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese chefs, restaurants and shops, was taking over. (She shut down her business completely in December.) Indonesian street food concept Kaki Lima was added to the lineup in May, just over a month before closure.
Zucchinis Cucina (438 Kerr St., Unit 5) in Oakville has shuttered. During the pandemic, the Italian eatery had its liquor licence suspended for allegedly serving unvaccinated diners. For what’s in its place, see above.
