The modern fine dining Indian restaurant at Queen and Manning is serving up fun starters - bao, sliders, tacos, fried chicken - with Indian flair, in tandem with contemporary takes on traditional dishes - Smoked Butter Chicken, Kale Saag.
Quebec’s fast casual Lebanese chain Boustan touched down in the 6ix for the first time last year: Scarborough in January '22, quickly followed by a York Mills & Leslie outpost four months later. Chiang Mai Thai Kitchen & Bar has softly opened in The Junction (2998 Dundas St. W.). The fourth outpost of the local chain takes over the space that was forever The Purple Onion Restaurant. Hot tip: It’s the sole location offering Thai brunch on weekends.

Between Keele and Dundas lies Japanese restaurant Dokkaebi (1620 Bloor St. W.), featuring the usual suspects – sushi, udon, katsu – with the added bonus of Korean fare, tacos, and happy hour specials. (“Where the only thing that's sober is the clock!”) Coming soon: “After Dark.”
FAM - Food & Masti at Victoria Park and Danforth (3315 Danforth Ave.) puts its own spin on menu items. Choose from Kolkata Waley Kathi Rolls, Bowls of Karma, Chijji Time, Fam Momos, Straight Outta Tandoor, and “Burp Water.” Grand opening celebrations take place June 30 to July 3, with giveaways, BOGO deals, free drinks and games.
Top sellers so far at Gelato Plus (486 Queen St. W.) between Spadina and Bathurst include Chocolate Hazelnut and Pistachio.
Attention milk tea lovers: Hero Tea has arrived in the GTA - first in Mississauga (719 Central Pkwy W., Unit 212), recently in North York (5285 Yonge St, Unit 4.) and Thornhill/Markham (Commerce Gate 505 Hwy7 W, Unit 65-66) - with a roster of brews including fresh milk kung fu tea, snow-topped sippers, and Yunan cold brew coffee.
Hungree Birdz (360 Lakeshore Rd. W.) in Mississauga is all about fast food faves: burgers, wraps, wings and poutine.
Discover rotating flavours of Ontario’s own Central Smith ice cream at Leslieville’s new The Little Moo Pop-Up (1400 Queen St. E.).
Speaking of ice cream, there’s something for everyone at Mucca Ice Cream (1757 Avenue Rd.) in Bedford Park, from Salty Caramel to Mango Sorbet.
Osmow’s 150th location opened to the public earlier this week at Square One (100 City Centre Dr., Food Court).

Check out Phancy’s Bodega’s new digs in The Junction (2473 Dundas St. W.) starting today. The sandwich shop and mini market moved on from their King & Niagara post (848 King St. W.) at the end last month.
Tip off: A focused menu of coffee, waffles and soft serve are happening in a modern boîte tucked down an alley at Yonge & Eglinton. See: Postman Waffles 2409 Yonge St.).
Queen Shawarma at Queen and Ossington (998 Queen St. W.) claims to be “the best shawarma restaurant in Toronto.” What say you?
Mexican sushi concept Sinaloa Factory began in Woodbridge, expanded to the Danforth last year, and continues to extend its footprint in the city with an eatery in Kensington Market (181 Augusta Ave.).
Barbecue and bourbon is what’s up in Baldwin Village. Smoque N’ Bones second spot (30 Baldwin St.), set in a historic house (formerly French resto Bodega) with bourbon bar and wraparound patio, kicks off tomorrow.
Wok Theory (530 Dundas St. W.), Chinatown’s latest addition at Dundas and Spadina, boasts an extensive dim sum menu, à la cart selections, and dinner sets for groups.
Earlier this year, fire shuttered Woofdawg Hotdog and new venture Frank Ranalli's Italian Beef. Not for long. Head to the new HQ in Kensington Market (185 Baldwin St.), where Mare Pizzeria was.
CLOSED
Basil Box at the edge of the Financial District (83 Yonge St.) has closed. Find other locations in the vicinity.
The owners of recent arrival Boomerang Sandwich (675 Danforth Ave.), are taking “a break from the business” to spend more time with family.
Doors opened to The Junction’s Hula Girl Espresso Boutique (2473 Dundas St. W.) in 2010. While the café has come to an end, their signature roasts are available for purchase online. For who’s moved in, see above.
Geste’s home of three years in Trinity Bellwoods (1183 Dundas St. W.), ceased operations Sunday. Thankfully the closure will be short-lived and the new spot isn’t far. Stay tuned.
After setting up shop on Dundas West (1185 Dundas St. W.) in 2020, followed by a move last July to Kensington Market (276 Augusta Ave.), Alberto Richards’ comedy club Nothing Fancy is closing. Soon. According to a post on socials yesterday, the last show in Kensington is tomorrow.
Piatto Bistro (1646 Dundas St. W.) came on the scene 34 years ago. Tomorrow marks the final day for Mississauga’s fine dining Italian restaurant.
The space that was Remembrance Gift & Variety Store (60 Dundas St. E.) for years is about to become a vape shop.
As I reported last week, Sap Restaurant (401 Bay St.) is wrapping things up July 2. Pro tip: Watch this space. One of O&B’s many new establishments in the queue, The Constance Tavern, is launching “soon” across the street.
After six years, Soul Chocolate is moving on from its teeny store in East Chinatown (583 Gerrard St. E.) for bigger and better things - an expansive facility close by (just west of Greenwood). Fun facts: 1. Their new next-door neighbours? Left Field Brewery. Beer and chocolate? Hell yeah. 2. Moving into the Gerrard space - Issho Bakery, slated to open this summer.
Shanghai Shikumen Fine Cuisine’s time in Chinatown (530 Dundas St W.) has come to a close. Visit them in Markham at First Markham Place (3225 Hwy 7, Unit 1A).
After 25 years of service, Yuzu No Hana (236 Adelaide St. W.) has bid farewell. A notice of closure published yesterday by wedded owners Karen and Bruce Bu includes, “Circumstances beyond our control have led us to this difficult decision.” Japango (122 Elizabeth St.), their original sushi spot that launched downtown in 1999, remains open for business.

With a power packed lineup including green cleanses and immunity boosters, Anthony Pereira’s new smoothie and juice bar in Mississauga A+ Smoodees (1065 Canadian Pl., Unit 124) gets you one step closer to better health.

Hot tip: East enders, stay tuned. A location is coming to Queen and Broadview this fall.
Daphne Restaurant (67 Richmond St. W.) debuts today in the Financial District. The dramatic shift from the dark interior of the previous establishment to the elevated Sante Fe-meets-Montauk vibes paired with a striking ‘dinner and a show’ open kitchen doling out fire-licked modern American fare, is sure to lure the crowd. Garden terrace, intimate bar area, and enveloping dining area in front are just as enticing. The 8,000+ sq. ft. destination is brought to you by hospitality INK Entertainment Group - recent additions to its vast portfolio include Margo (April) and Ultra (June) - and real estate co. Dream Office REIT.

Tropical fruit lovers unite: Mango Mango (337 College St.) is dishing up sweet treats of every kind. Picada, chamango, waffle, sago, and smoothies are just the beginning.

11:59 Bar:Cafe (70 Temperance St., Unit 1) is an all-day affair that transforms from cafe to lounge.
CLOSED
In 2019, Brock Sandwich (1260 Bloor St. W.) made a triumphant return after fire damage the previous year. However, after a decade of sandos and service, the Bloordale stalwart is permanently shutting down on Saturday.
Bad news: Saturday is the last day to visit Clandestino Wine Bar’s Parkdale haunt (1592 Queen St. W.). Good news: CWB is simply upping sticks for another spot in town.
DNDN Asian Eatery launched in Midtown (2109 1/2 Yonge St.) last summer. While this location has ceased operations, it’s not the end.

After 12+ years in Liberty Village, For the Love of Cake Custom Creations (171 E Liberty St., Unit 117) is closing for good on Sunday.
Lester ‘Les’ Sabilano’s Lamesa Filipino Kitchen (669 Queen St. W.) was a revelation. It’s impossible to grasp in 2023, when food from virtually every corner of the world is readily available, that experiencing traditional, elevated Filipino fare and a Kamayan dinner downtown - on Queen West, no less - a decade ago was remarkable. Luckily, the restaurant lived on in a slightly different form after the move in 2019, taking over his more casual restaurant Lasa (634 St Clair Ave. W.). After an 11-year trek, doors close for a final time on Sunday.
Orote (276 Havelock St.), a modern Korean restaurant known for its prix fixe menus, came on the scene Fall 2021.
The announcement of the forthcoming closure of the city’s “first completely vegan Italian restaurant” went out over the weekend. You’ve got until September to get in on a four-course prezzo fisso at Osteria Du (536 Queen St. W.), brought to you by Awai Hospitality Group (Avelo, Pizzeria Du, M!lk Dessert Bar). The reason? “Our rent is going up to pre-pandemic rates, and unfortunately the numbers just don't work out in today's environment.”
Pelicana Chicken began downtown at Yonge & Bloor (730 Yonge St., Unit 9) in December 2021.
Today Sap Restaurant (401 Bay St. ) - known as Bannock until Winter ’21 - posted next month will be the last. The Oliver & Bonacini (O&B) restaurant that launched at the corner of Queen & Bay in 2011 has been surrounded by construction on and off for years. Final service is July 2.

Despite doing this column for eons, it’s still astonishing how unique each edition is. Take this week’s discoveries, for example. 25 new arrivals that are all over the map - geographically, cuisine wise, and in terms of settings - and include a number of firsts. Say what you will about our fair city and surrounding areas. One thing they definitely aren’t? Boring. See for yourself.

The hidden bar/music venue/billiards room by resto conglomerate Scale Hospitality Group appears to have given way to The Pearl, a “performance and event venue.” Grand opening festivities took place this weekend. TR Newsletter subscribers were the first to know.
Hot tip: Blue Collar Bakery just debuted a brick-and-mortar destination. Your new go-to for bread, baked goods and coffee is in full effect in Bloordale (1230 Bloor St. W.), brought to you by executive chef Katy Shear (previously Chan) and Niki Tsourounakis, the dream team and real life partners behind Neon Food Group, home of Café Neon, Bar Neon, Neon Bread & Wine, and Neon Commissary.
Baldwin Village continues to transform with the recent arrival of Butter and Blue (9 Baldwin Ave.). Fun fact: The cafe and bakery set up shop in a space previously home to a bed and breakfast.
Mexican eatery Casa Mezcal launched their three-floor venture in the heart of the Entertainment District (291 King St. W.) Summer 2020. The mission of new all-you-can-eat (AYCE) Japanese hot pot Haru Shabu Shabu? To “immerse you you in the warm feelings of a spring day.” ‘Haru’ means ‘spring’ after all. Find it in North York at Empress Walk (5095 Yonge St., Unit B1).
I reported in April Jimbu Himalayan Thakali Kitchen was on the approach. Update: It’s go time for their thalis, momos, chow mein, fried rice, and other good stuff in Parkdale (1508 Queen St. W.).
Coffee shops and cafes abound these days. Lokum (75 Nassau St.) however, is not like the others. The latest addition to Kensington Market features sand brewed Turkish coffee. Between that and their Turkish delights, tea, halwa, baklava, and nutella bombs, it’s a must-visit.
Been living without Pork Volcanos in your life? That ends today, thanks to Lucky 79 Asian Street Food. This new spot in Richmond Hill is all about Leng Saap – aka pork bone soup - the aforementioned volcano, available in three sizes (one, two or five pounds), non-spicy or with heat, with rice or noodles. There are more snacks and mains to be had, paired with Thai Iced Tea and/or Soju, natch.
You heard it here first. Masa Deli (985 Dovercourt Rd.) opens June 17 with morning essentials (breakfast sandos, coffee), lunchtime fare (heldhelds and bowls) and what might just be THE item of summer: Choco Banana Bread Ice Cream Sandwich.
MyMy Chicken claims to have “the best Korean fried chicken.” Run your own stats out at their new set up at Mississauga’s Square One (100 City Centre Dr.).
Swiftly following the launch of a new concept at Mr. Coco’s last week, there’s more news from the coconut king. Introducing a Mississauga location (265 Enfield Pl., Unit 100A) in soft opening June 17-18, with grand opening to follow June 24-25.
What a ride. I’ve been keeping you up-to-date on Neon Tiger’s movements since its debut back in 2021. Here’s a quick catch up: Moving out of 14 Dupont St. at the end of last year, then setting up shop in Recette’s former digs (1166 Queen St. W.) days later, the hotspot with “dope food, dope music, dope cocktails” and buzzy patio just added a second location. Plot twist: NT has returned to its original outpost at Avenue and Dupont! The now second destination - though still technically the first - softly (re)opened Friday night. p.s. TR Newsletter subscribers got word first. p.p.s. Chronicles such as this, which became extremely commonplace throughout the pandemic - and continue to be the norm - are why the landscape is now an intricate, tangled web that requires a lot of time, know-how, and patience to unravel. Hence why intrepid reporting remains vital – to deliver an up-to-date account of what’s happening in the industry and neighbourhoods across the city and GTA.
Want to take in the cityscape? Head to Pretty Boy Rooftop (335 Queen St. W.), cresting Sonder The Beverly’s fifth floor, with focused menu of snacks, ‘za, and roster of cocktails including Permanent Vacation, The Last Of Us, and Tequila Makes My Clothes Fall Off. Do you remember? Previous iterations of rooftop patios under the previous hotel include Charlotta Bar and Do Not Disturb.
For top notch conservas, charcuteria (Ibérico ham, cured meat, cheese, olives), and other Spanish pantry necessities (bomba rice), head to Roncesvalle’s new gourmet food shop, Spanish Pig (77 Roncesvalles Ave.).
Tacos Baby J touched down in Roncy (371 Roncesvalles Ave.) not long after award-winning comedian John Mulaney’s special of the same name minus the Mexican fare. Grand opening is Saturday.
Thay Bar Thai Food landed in Koreatown (690 Euclid Ave.) with an array of starters (Crab Rangoon on repeat), curries, noodles, fried rice, etc. Did you know? It replaces Playa Cabana’s Barrio Coreano that moved around the corner in March ‘22.

Cottage country is beyond the usual TR radius (Toronto, Scarborough, Markham, Vaughan, Thornhill, Richmond Hill, East York, North York, Mississauga, Oakville and all the nooks and crannies in between) but the return of historic Muskoka hotel and resort Windermere House on Lake Rousseau (2508 Windermere Rd.), is cause for celebration. The hotel, Rousseau Grill restaurant, pub and patio are now open under new ownership. Grand opening celebrations take place June 21.

Two Canadian powerhouses under one roof? At the airport? HMSHost has partnered with local brewer Henderson Brewing Company and iconic Canadian band Rush (aka Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart) for Henderson Brewery @ YYZ, a 28-seat taproom at Toronto Pearson International Airport. The relationship between the renowned musicians and and beer co. go back aways: Since collabing on the the first Rush brew Rush Canadian Golden Ale during the pandemic (Aug ‘21), they released Moving Pictures Ale (Oct ‘21), Moving Pitchers beer (Mar ‘22), Signals 40th Anniversary Belgian Ale (Oct ‘22), and Xanabrew Belgian Extra Strong Ale last month (May ‘23). The bar, slated to open later in Terminal 1 later this year, will feature “artifacts from Rush’s touring and recording career and will provide a unique experience for Rush fans from around the globe,” according to Monday’s release. I reckon it’ll launch in time with Lee’s highly anticipated memoir, My Effin’ Life, out Nov 14, 2023. And as Lee and Lifeson are longtime oenophiles, a wine collab is definitely in order, with perhaps a wine bar to follow? From starters of Aloo Pie ($4.50) and Saheena ($5) to shareables (Fried Pepper Fish $16.50, Chicken Wings $14), mains served with fried rice, chow mein, lo mein, or canton (Jerk Chicken $15, D’Junction: Chicken, Shrimp & Fried Chicken $17), and rich curries (2 Veg of the Day $12, Duck $18, Goat $18) served with roti or rice, it’s a veritable feast requiring multiple visits.
From cream-filled cube croissants to velvety Viennese style coffee, Korean bakery and café Kream (526 Yonge St.) is here to brighten your day.
Despite recent headlines, the influx of establishments in the Financial District (with heaps more on the way) aren’t all overflowing with champagne and caviar (though plenty of pricey options await). Take Market Eatery at Scotia Plaza (40 King St. W., Concourse Level) boasting 15+ joints and fast food options, for instance. In addition to food court and mall denizens such as Aroma Espresso Bar, Booster Juice, Danish Pastry House, Freshwest Grill, Freshii, Jimmy the Greek, Salus Fresh, Thai Express, Tim Hortons, Villa Madina, and full-service resto Ninki Sushi, discover new outposts of FLOCK Rotisserie, The Indian Canteen, KoHa Pacific Kitchen, Market Street Catch and Mos Mos Coffee, with at least nine more businesses slated to join the roster.
Pasteis de Natas – aka Portuguese custard tarts – the sweet pastry you know and love boasting a creamy custard filling, trademark caramelized top and crunchy finish - are the name of the game at More Natas Please (762 Yonge St.).
In addition to top-shelf EVOO and naturally aged balsamic vinegars, shop hot sauces, rubs, finishing salts, maple syrup, and olive oil-infused chocolate at My Olive’s fourth storefront: Union Market (Union Station - 65 Front St. W.).

The expansive building famously home to Rocco's Plum Tomato since 1990* is now 2,800 sq. ft of Republic 23 (1068 Islington Ave.), a new restaurant and lounge featuring “exotic nights from the Middle East.” *Find RPT in cozier quarters at 164 Queensway.
From balayage to baked goods. Etobicoke staple for over two decades, hair salon Studio Charm (621B The Queensway) is changing things up with Studio Charm Café, a cozy on-site spot for tea, coffee and warm croissants.
Hot tip: Caribbean vegan fare has landed in East Chinatown. Vital-Life Vegan Restaurant softly opened Sunday at Broadview and Gerrard (360 Broadview Ave.).
CLOSED
Blackburn Social House arrived in Little Italy (488 College Ave.) November 2021. While doors closed in March, it’s not the end of the road. The team has “exciting plans to continue the Blackburn brand in the future.”
Cha Miao²’s two east end locations - Leslieville (912 Queen St. E.) touched down last summer; East Chinatown inside Dine & Dim (633 Gerrard St. E.) last winter – may not have worked out, but the BBT shop opened just east of University in the Fall, with more on the way.
Known for fresh Mexican fare and jalapeño margaritas, Como En Casa (565 Yonge St.) served the community at large for 12 years. However, due to reasons including changes in the area, owners Carlos and Fer made the difficult decision to close for good. Final day to say adios is tomorrow, cinco de Mayo.
It’s too late to get in one more dance at Parlour (270 Adelaide Ave. W.) - the last hurrah was January 27. Will be boogieing at the new spot? Maybe. TR Tip Off: The space is slated to be Paradise Grotto, an “island getaway” bar and grill.
Smith (553 Church St.), a fixture in the Village since 2011 (and as Straight before that), has come to an end. A post announcing immediate closure on their usually quiet IG came as a shock to many. With three floors, patios, and legendary brunch, despite a lack of social media presence, it remained a staple way beyond the neighbourhood and hung on throughout the pandemic, as did sister spot Wish, which stuck it out 22 years before shuttering in November. Owner Renda Abdo’s 7 West Café, is the longest stalwart of the bunch: another three-floor Victorian transformed into a cozy haunt. [Former spots include exquisitely designed House Maison across the street (like a trip to Nantucket) and Black Skirt on College.] Of particular note: One of the most memorable elements of Smith? The menu. The actual printed menu. (Featured of course in the menu design class I taught at college.) It started out at an albeit unwieldy size, but the newspaper look and feel - featuring stunning black-and-white illustrations that lent dishes such as Berkshire Bacon & Frisee Salad ($19) and Seared Scallops ($24) an encyclopedic feel, and for awhile continued with vivid, drool-inducing colour photos (e.g. bread, bacon) that made you want to devour the page itself - was worth all the folding and finagling. If you’d ever been tempted to stuff a menu into your bag as a keepsake, it was this one.

For day trader vibes, keep your eyes on the ticker board and watch the “market” moves as drink prices rise and fall. Put those Succession and Billions acquired skills to good use: Try to buy while numbers are low.
Empire Market Café landed in Etobicoke’s Village of Islington (5126 Dundas St. W.) Winter 2020. By the following summer, EMC won an award for best new business. The Bar Jokbal Night Market (639 Yonge St.) softly opened Saturday where Aroma Food Hall stood.
Kiin Café - an extension of Chef Nuit Regular and Jeff Regular’s award-winning Kiin (326 Adelaide St. W.) that reopened last fall - features new hours and menu offerings. Think: Thai brunch boasting traditional Thai breakfast, lunch staples and extremely crushable mini doughnuts. Did you know? The Regulars are part of the team behind Michelin Recommended PAI Northern Thai Kitchen amongst other buzzy eateries across the 6ix.
If you don’t have a Kotn tote or tee, you’ve def seen it everywhere. The Canadian fashion house behind the ‘it’ items has teamed up with Michelin Recommended Maha's Egyptian Brunch for a clothing cafe collab Kotn x Maha's Egyptian Café in Leslieville (978 Queen St. E.).
Joining the throng of higher end, finer dining restos, Laylak Lebanese Cuisine (25 Toronto St.) lands downtown offering a “seasonal menu featuring the finest imported ingredients and aim to provide an authentic taste of Lebanese hospitality.” p.s. Sibling Layl by Laylak is slated to launch later this year in Oakville.

Discover the latest in the main cafeteria at at York University School of Continuing Studies Building (68 The Pond Rd.), and Tuesday marked the grand opening at Dundas Station on Line 1 Yonge–University.
You might know chef Tomer Markovitz from his time at Parallel. Hailing from Tel Aviv, Israel, he developed everything on the menu save the tahini. Since then he's been "A bit off the grid... all over the place..." he told TR in an exclusive phone interview. In the best possible way: hosting private chef dinners, consulting, and working on a very special project. Romi's, his boutique bakery named after his daughter, featuring mostly Israeli/Jewish fare - one of his many specialities - by way of baked goods, prepared salads, sauces, dips and other grab-and-go items.
