The end of August used to signal a kind of collective wind down when many businesses shut down for a usually short (and much-needed) break from the grind. Cut to August 2025: Think the opposite of that and times it by 12. That’s what this week is like. Like a damn explosion: I’m talking more 20 new spots to venture out to and more closures to take note of.

NO ONE COVERS THE CITY LIKE THIS.

Psst. Want the inside track on what’s happening? Keep your eyes peeled on the website (the #TRrending section is a good place to start), listen to THE TIP OFF , a supplement to my OPEN/CLOSED featuring breaking exclusives, sneak peeks, hot tips + the week’s top stories and events like you’ve never seen - or heard - before in 3 minutes or less on the new TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST , follow Toronto Restaurants on Instagram and Facebook for breaking news and updates , and subscribe to the TR Newsletter .

Here’s the very latest:

OPEN

Archi Element gathers together fine ceramics, tea, and workshops under one roof at College and Dufferin (1150 College St.).

Bar Rustica at Queen and Portland (571 Queen St. W.) is doing “late night pizza and pasta” until 4am on the daily, designed to deliver sustenance and carbs after a night out at the clurb. The new concept is brought to you by Pizza Rustica (37 Blue Jays Way) in what has been another late night destination up until now. Details below.

PSA: Crispy Chinese burgers have arrived at Union Station. Head to Bingz Burger at Union Market (Fresh Market Level, 65 Front St. W., Unit 430-B).

Psst. If you’re all about matcha and dirty sodas, Cafe Sips is for you. Peep the stationary coffee cart outfitted by Amalfi coast umbrellas near King and Niagara (91 Walnut Ave.) in the parking lot of dope women’s kicks and streetwear shop, Makeway.

Back in April, I gave you the inside track on east side barbecue joint The Carbon Bar’s spin-off, The Carbon Snack Bar, dropping at the corner of King and Spadina (460 King St. W.). Update: Doors softly opened Tuesday.

Hey Etobicoke, grand opening for Chai Stop (3180 Lake Shore Blvd. W., Unit 3) is happening tomorrow. On the menu: Chai drinks, baked items and “light bites.”

TR Ice Cream Hot Tip #1: Toronto's first New Zealand style ice cream shop just touched down in North York. What makes the dessert decidedly Kiwi? Think ice cream boasting real fruit doled out like creamy soft serve. See for yourself at Enzi Ice Cream inside Upper East Food Club (5317 Yonge St.).

Following the recent flurry of activity in the Financial District, Everyside - Social Eatery & Taphouse debuts tomorrow right in the heart of it (Richmond-Adelaide Centre 120 Adelaide St. W., Unit 100). The brewery/resto out is dishing out burgers, tacos, pizza, bang bang shrimp, tartare, and other crowd-pleasers alongside select signature brews in addition to imported and domestic suds.

TR Ice Cream Hot Tip #2: There’s something for everyone from tykes to epicureans at Good Gang Ice Cream (656 Annette St.) and it’s going to require multiple visits. You’ll see.

Planks and piccolos? The fitness studio paired with wellness cafe business model proves to be more popular than ever. The latest example: Midtown’s new arrival in a historic building, Groove Pilates & Wellness Bar (2532 Yonge St.).

Helvaci Ali started its Turkish desserts and coffee shop in Turkey, then branched into the States, followed by Mississauga’s Ridgeway Plaza (3535 Odyssey Dr., Unit 89). Vaughan, it’s your turn (3175 Rutherford Rd., Unit 22). p.s. Watch this space: Scarborough and downtown Toronto are in the works.

Speaking of Vaughan, Woodbridge added Joker Lounge (120 Winges Rd.) to its roster, with a lineup of halal dishes (think Akawi Cheese, Chicken Shawarma Wrap, Lahmacun), drinks, and shisha on offer.

Kanafani Sweets & Coffee has been doing authentic Palestinian desserts and premium coffee in the west end (Ridgeway Plaza 3505 Odyssey Dr., Unit 66) since last year. Their kunafeh and other treats can now be found east side in Scarborough (Wexford Heights Plaza (2082B Lawrence Ave. E.). Doors open tomorrow with the whole menu available for 20 per cent off during soft open.

I told you it was about to launch. Doors for College and Bathurst’s latest arrival, cocktail bar Lonely Diner, kicked off officially last night where Mars Diner stood for what felt like forever (432 College St.). I got a first look on Monday - Follow TR on IG for a sneak peek.

Matcha Haus at Dundas and Bathurst (324 Bathurst St.) boasts bites and beverages featuring the buzziest ingredient of the year. Sips include bangers such as Banana Bread, Double Pistachio, Pandan Coconut Cloud and Strawberry Yuzu, paired with emerald-tinged nibbles.

Hot dessert alert: Taiwanese wheel pies in an array of flavours have touched down in North York. See: Mister Wheel nestled inside Upper East Food Club (5317 Yonge St.).

MJ Curry Kitchen & Shawarma (203 Dundas St. E.) moved into King Place BBQ & Curry’s recently vacated space at Dundas and Jarvis with an array of “Indian, Middle Eastern and Canadian food” - aka comfort fare including biriyani, curry, shawarma, pizza and other grub - with items as low as $4.99 and $5.99.

Roxton Public House has arrived at Dundas and Ossington (1112 Dundas St. W.). TR Trivia: It’s by the folks of MOK (Man of Kent Pub) around the corner (202 Ossington Ave.), so you know it’s proper British. The addy was home to Opera Bob’s Public House for 16 years before shuttering at the end of last year, including various pop-ups such as Slammie Sammies last year which is launching in the east end (828 Eastern Ave.) soon.

Shake Shack landed in the 6ix not long ago but the American burger chain has quickly set up a whack of places. Add Mississauga mall Square One (100 City Centre Dr.) to the list.

Toronto vegan stalwart Sorry I’ve Got Plants brings its healthy, vitamin-packed meals from Roncesvalles to the Financial District at Bay Adelaide Centre in The PATH (333 Bay St., Unit F6).

Potato-centric eateries are nothing new - poutine has become one of our national dishes after all - however the emergence of “the first potato bar in Canada” is recent. It appears our love of spuds cannot be contained. Spotato in Midtown (2471 Yonge St.) pays homage to the baked variety.

Sun Chinese Cuisine drops into Yonge and Sheppard (25 Spring Garden Ave.) with a host of noods - traditional Lanzhou beef and hand pulled ramen are just the beginning - and other addictive fare.

Last spring, I reported Vero Italian Sandwich Co. (477 Queen St. W.) was on the approach. Doors have opened with Soprano-esque selections including: Il Diavolo (Soppresatta Calabrese, Nduja Crema, Peperonata, Mozzarella), Don Angelo (Prosciutto, Burrata, Parmigiano, Tomato, Balsamic, Arugula), and Gabagool (Capicola, Mortadella, Fresh Mozzarella, Giardiniera, Tomato, Arugula).

CLOSED

On Friday, By The Way Cafe shared that doors are closing August 31. The all-day spot has held it down in The Annex (400 Bloor St. W.) for over four decades.

Courage Cookies’ pop-up at Stackt Market (28 Bathurst St.) has come to an end. Luckily, you can still get over 30 varieties of their sweet stuff at their bake shop and cafe on Dundas West (1561 Dundas St. W.) and numerous retailers across the city.

Lemon Lily Organic Tea debuted a retail outpost in Riverside (747 Queen St. E.) last year. The brick-and-mortar side of things is coming to an close September 7.

Scarlett launched at the corner of Queen and Portland (571 Queen St. W.) days before the pandemic shutdown in 2020 and just got its liquor licence back before switching to another concept - Details above. The venue started as a resto-bar, and for a time, welcomed “exotic” dancers.

Bad news: Sorry I’ve Got Plants OG spot on Roncy (476 Roncesvalles Ave.) is done, but their vegan fare is on offer downtown. Pop up top for details. As for SIGP’s former stomping grounds? It’s about to become home to something pretty sweet: Steven Tran Chocolates.

The facade of Japanese eatery Sushi & Bento (187 Dundas St. W.) is boarded up.

This week’s arrivals lean towards the super casual. Translation: No need to swap outfits (read: slides/stretchy pants can stay put) or dole out serious cash for food and drinks (b/c budgets). And as per usual these days, the food recalls continue to pile up.

THE TIP OFF - EDITION 18

🎧 Listen to THE TIP OFF, a supplement to my OPEN/CLOSED featuring breaking exclusives, sneak peeks, hot tips + the week’s top stories and events like you’ve never seen - or heard - before in 3 minutes or less on TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST. Available on YouTube, Apple, Spotify and other platforms.

THE TIP OFF - EDITION 18

THE TIP OFF this week confirms the frenzied activity of arrivals and closures is far from over - including in some of the city’s buzziest neighbourhoods.

THIS JUST IN:

Leslieville has been welcoming bars and restos left and right lately. Recent additions include Bar Mini, La Bamboche, Masa Deli - and soon, The Castle and Ramona’s Kitchen, to name just a few. A single block across from Jimmie Simpson Park in particular will soon be lined with a bevy of food and drink spots side-by-side, both old and new: The Castle, Hooked, La Bamboche, The Roy Public House, Juzz Sushi, EAT BKK Thai Kitchen, All Way Convenience (which now features hot fare including rice dishes, samosas, and other grab ’n go eats), and soon, Bar Bokeh joins the mix, landing where bike shop Warren Cycle Works operated back in the day (890 Queen St. W.).

Harbord Village, home to many new ventures including Kokoro Japanese Sushi House, Maven, Musoshin Ramen, and any minute now, Bar Eugenie - is adding a Mexican joint to the roster. Alebrije is moving into Her Father's Cider Bar + Kitchen’s former stomping grounds (119 Harbord St.). Doors are slated to open this year. (Link to TTO 11)

Calling all seafood lovers. Seafood and oyster bar Seahorse is taking over where Tuck Shop Co. formerly stood in Summerhill, (1226 Yonge St.) with chef Federico Garcia, formerly of Quetzal, whipping up a storm of good grub.

If you’re a cocktail enthusiast, you’ll want to be in on Lonely Diner Cocktail Bar, coming “soon” to College and Bathurst. Make sure to follow here for details.

Pfft. A short week doesn’t mean a thing these days, especially when it comes to arrivals. And closures - including temporary ones -are always in the mix. See for yourself.

NO ONE COVERS THE CITY LIKE THIS.

Psst. Want the inside track on what’s happening? Here’s the very latest:

OPEN

After a stretch of soft opening, tonight marks grand opening of Antylia in Bloorcourt (1059 Bloor St. W.). Behind the new project: Chefs Ashley McKay and Aldo Camarena. Find out more about their exciting new venture in Episode 1 of my new TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST. TR Pro Tip: I recommend watching it on YouTube. Prefer audio only? Listen on Spotify, Apple and other platforms where you get your podcasts. Bonus: Read the 2021 interview in my acclaimed chef series, At The Pass.

Saturday marks the grand opening of cupcake-centric Baked By Bean (1238 Queen St. E.). The Leslieville biz moves into what was home to another bakery, It’s the Icing on the Cake, until recently.

Brandor Coffee does everything from coffee to fragrances with a deft eye for design and branding. Find their aesthetic spot downtown at King and University (100 University Ave., Suite 106). Swoon.

Forever Young just touched down at Yonge and Steeles (6600 Yonge St.) with an “all-ages indoor paradise for food, play and unforgettable parties.”

Arabic/European coffee shop Hailed Coffee expands with another site downtown, this time at Dundas and Bay (112 Elizabeth St., Unit 2). Grand opening is Saturday. TR Trivia: The addy was formerly home to foodie fave, Snapture This.

ISO Chongqing noodles? Look no further than North York’s new Modu Three Brothers (4860 Yonge St.). TR Fun Fact: There’s also a MTB in Scarborough (Skycity Shopping Centre, 3260 Midland Ave., Unit F101-102).

Popular patisserie and boulangerie Nord Lyon expanded toThe Well last summer and landed at Queen and John mere weeks ago (complete with AYCE French buffet, fyi) and now brings its “taste of France” to Union Station (65 Front St. W., Lower Level). Doors opened Tuesday.

Oakberry, which coincidentally also boasts a location at Union Station, is serving up its signature açai smoothies and bowls in FiDi at Bay Adelaide Centre (333 Bay St., Unit F2, PATH Level).

The slogan of Baldwin Village’s new Omai Rice Bar (21 Baldwin St.)? “Rice is life.” Think rice bowls: Miso Glazed Salmon, Korean BBQ Beef, Crispy Pork Belly, and the like from the fine folks of neighbouring Japanese eatery Omai (3 Baldwin St.) and one half of popular Takja BBQ House (962 College St.). Did you know? The addy was formerly home to Sambuca Grill and until lately, Arctic Bites.

Psst. After a slight delay, reservations for modern Indian restaurant, Oro Luxury Dining (501 College St.) are now open. I was first to report restaurateur/chef Hemant Bhagwani’s latest project back in April on my new podcast, then on Insta.

PWD* (788 King St. W.) reopened after a brief temporary closure (Of course I cover those as well. See: Here, here and here, to name a few.) *Pizza Wine Disco for the olds.

Rumi has been in the works in Leaside for so long, many posited it may never happen. Psst. Doors at Rumi Steakhouse (1597 Bayview Ave.) are now open. In addition to a selection of à la carte steaks ($42-$108), discover a range of starters, Neapolitan pizzas, pastas, mains, sides and desserts.

The Annex’s new cafe and dessert destination Simit-Chi (501 Bloor St. W.) features freshly baked goods - think bagels, baklava, cookies, and other pastries - and states “No U.S. products used in our recipes.”

A Persian restaurant has replaced a longstanding food hall in Leaside. Introducing Vozara Food Factory (858 Eglinton Ave. E.), where Conspiracy Pizza and numerous other vendors held court over the years.

Zero Gravity (988 St. Clair Ave. W.) is more than a convenience store. It’s also a gelateria and dry cleaner, making it an ultimate one-stop shop.

p.s. While I don’t normally cover the opening of chain eateries such as Swiss Chalet , as it has taken over where The Palace (722 Pape Ave.) stood for decades before shuttering for good during the pandemic , it is worth noting, as this phenomenon of large corporations taking over spaces that would normally by occupied by small business owners is on the rise.

CLOSED

Thai rolled Ice cream joint Arctic Bites (21 Baldwin St.) set down roots in Baldwin Village in 2016. To discover who’s taken over the space, pop up top.

Italian and Mediterranean restaurant Hungry Jack’s Grill (820 St. Clair Ave. W.) has closed for now, with a new location is in the works. Stay tuned.

Vietnamese bakery La La Bakeshop wrapped up service at Oceans Fresh Food Markets Mississauga shop (4557 Hurontario St.) on Monday. The Vietnamese bakery joined the supermarket in 2023. Other LLB’s in Toronto and GTA remain in operation.

The beginning of the end of Offworld/The Grizzly Bar (739 Queen St. W.) kicks off Wednesday.

Filipino eatery known for its Kamayan feast, Tinuno, has temporary closed the downtown location (31 Howard St.). The one in North York’s Little Manila (3520 Bathurst St.) is in full effect.

NEWS

Alcohol tax cuts in Ontario are now in effect. Here’s the lowdown.

Live music and entertainment venue the El Mocambo boasts new ownership.

THE TIP OFF - EDITION 17

🎧 Listen to THE TIP OFF, a supplement to my OPEN/CLOSED featuring breaking exclusives, sneak peeks, hot tips + the week’s top stories and events like you’ve never seen - or heard - before in 3 minutes or less on TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST. Available on YouTube, Apple, Spotify and other platforms.

THE TIP OFF - EDITION 17

THE TIP OFF this week confirms the frenzied activity of arrivals and closures is far from over - including in some of the city’s buzziest neighbourhoods.

THIS JUST IN:

East side’s The Carbon Bar is a getting a counterpart right downtown. Get ready for The Carbon Snack Bar 460 about to set up shop at the corner of King and Spadina (460 King St. W.), where Quantum Coffee called home until 2020. TR Trivia: QC returned to the area via The Well (482 Front St. W.) last March.

Warmer temps are finally on the approach, which means prime ice cream weather has arrived. However, you’ll have to cross S’cream Ice Cream + Coffee off your list. Touching down in Yorkville (126 Cumberland St.) at the onset of the pandemic, the coffee and confection shop offered more than just cones - booze floats were just a fraction of their popular lineup and in 2021, added a password protected speakeasy upstairs.

La Mooriyya Markette’s motto? “Explore the world, one shelf at a time” The very recent addition to Kensington Market took over a sprawling grocery space (210 Augusta Ave.),at the corner of Augusta and Baldwin last fall, featuring a variety of vendors and retailers. In fact, Marry Me Mochi, the ever-expanding chain of Japanese mochi donut shops, opened an Insta-ready outpost out front. While La Mooriyya has closed, the pretty in pink doughnut destination is open for business.

Lobby has a long history in the 6ix. Do you remember standing in line to get in back in the day? At Avenue Road and Bloor (192 Bloor St. W.) no less? The nightclub kicked off in September 2003, just in time for TIFF. Thanks in part to its proximity to Yorkville, it drew a steady crowd for some time before doors closed in 2010. Nine years later, it touched down on Queen West (1032 Queen St. W.) and last year added Hamilton to the roster (151 James St. S.). Here’s the thing. The Queen West outpost? Temporarily closed. And you’ll never believe what’s next. It’s about to land right back at Avenue Road and Bloor. At its original address. You can’t make this stuff up. Note: Queen West is slated to reopensoon” with “a new, sexier experience — all with the atmosphere you still love.”

Think a reprieve from the rush of fine dining ventures has arrived? Think again. Psst. Oro Luxury Dining is scheduled to debut in Little Italy on May 20 with a swanky interior and vibe, in the long-standing, recently shuttered location of La Carnita (501 College St.). Note: As of April 14 opening is now May 21. Subject to change.

THE TIP OFF - EDITION 16

🎧 Listen to THE TIP OFF, a supplement to my OPEN/CLOSED featuring breaking exclusives, sneak peeks, hot tips + the week’s top stories and events like you’ve never seen - or heard - before in 3 minutes or less on TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST

THE TIP OFF - EDITION 16

THE TIP OFF this week is bursting with big changes, fine dining, Michelin, and intrigue. You know, the usual.

THIS JUST IN:

Little Italy has seen an influx of activity lately, few if any, Italian joints. Will that trend continue with the arrival of N.L. Ginzburgs (548 College St.)? Stay tuned.

Speaking of Little Italy, By Aanch came on the scene in 2023.  A “theatrical interpretation of modern day Indian fare”, and “sassy little sister” to chef Kumar’s Michelin Recommended Aanch Restaurant has closed. The original on Wellington (259 Wellington St. W.) remains open.

The movement in Yorkville these days is off the charts, including temporary closures. Paros (119 Yorkville Ave.), a relatively new addition, was lauded by the glitterati when it opened  the end of September 2023.  The Greek restaurant and bar is closed for now, slated to reopen “soon.”

Yonge and Wellesley, known for its mostly casual offerings, is getting a serious upgrade with a fine dining Japanese restaurant. Sushi Kiwami has dropped at Yonge and Gloucester (599 Yonge St.) with omakase lunch or dinner coming in at a cool $299 per person.

With so much breaking news and arrivals and closures happening at breakneck speed, numerous establishments comings and goings have slipped under the radar. Take The Shore Club for example from The Tip Off Edition 13. The steakhouse known for its surf and turf closed months ago however eluded most of the public and press up until my report last month. Add another steakhouse to the list: The Executive Hotel Cosmopolitan Toronto’s sole restaurant and bar. Wildfire Steakhouse & Wine Bar wrapped up service on the premises (8 Colborne St.) last summer**, which at first glance, may appear as just another closure, however is notable as the hotel is part of the Michelin Guide. For a brief rundown on Michelin Hotels see below.* No wonder it went under the radar until now - At the time of recording, the restaurant has the hotel’s address and contact info on its website and Michelin includes the restaurant as part of the hotel in its listing online. As for the hotel? The (restaurant) space is currently under renovation, said to be welcoming a new dining destination this year.

*In September 2023, the Michelin Guide revealed the first Michelin Keys for Canada. “Like the Michelin Stars for restaurants, the Michelin Keys are our most outstanding hotels,” with three distinctions - One, Two, and Three Keys. While the ‘key’ concept may be a new addition, it’s a little known fact that Michelin gave out accolades to 20 Toronto hotels in 2022.

**The steakhouse is currently operating at its location in Oshawa.

OPEN/CLOSED: TORONTO/GTA Restaurant News April 3-9, 2025

The OPEN/CLOSED is THE most comprehensive resource of the latest restaurant openings – virtual, brick-and-mortar, pop-ups, allll the things - and food/drink news in the city. No one does it bigger or better. Watch for the drop every Thursday. #iykyk

🕘 12 min read

Ice storm then patio weather? It’s wild out there. Welcome to spring in the 6ix. And that goes for the comings and goings as well. You’’ll notice less arrivals than usual logged below - that’s all thanks to the influx of closures and breaking news.

And I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Chains are not impervious to closures. Case in point: Popeyes at one of the busiest corners downtown, Queen and Spadina (400 Queen St. W.), is just one example of many.

OPEN

Standard Time (165 Geary Ave., 2nd Floor Unit A), one of the city’s top spots for food, music, dancing, discourse and shopping for vinyl, is about to add ‘bar’ to its repertoire beginning April 3. No doubt the Geary Hub Bar Standard going to be one of THE places to be. See you there. Psst. I gave you the head’s up on my podcast last month. Hear for yourself on The Tip Off - Edition 14 on my new TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST available on on YouTube, Spotify, Apple and other platforms where you get your podcasts. TR Pro Tip: Watch/Listen to Episode One of the podcast for my onsite interview with two talented Toronto chefs who participated in Standard Time’s epic ‘Plates’ series.

Rosedale’s Coco Market just added to the fam. Find their second health and wellness shop Uptown (2549 Yonge St.) stocked with plenty of snacks, pantry items and home goods.

Calling all dessert lovers: Choco Choo arrives at the edge of Cabbagetown (249 Gerrard St. E.) with sweet treats galore. Think ice cream, cake, and brownies, and the like.

Nashmi joins The Food Alley (615 Queen St. W.), the outdoor food court that debuted on Queen between Bathurst and Portland last year. On the menu: Halal Jordanian food. Grand opening is Saturday.

Nepal India Curry House brings Nepalese and Indian dishes together under one roof in Roncy Village (167 Roncesvalles Ave.), including rich curries, pillowy naan, momos and other comfort fare.

Scarlett at Queen and Portland (571 Queen St. W.) has reopened after a liquor licence suspension launched on March 26.

As I reported last month, St. Lawrence Market’s first Saturday Farmers’ Market in the long-awaited North Building (92 Front St. E.) is happening this weekend.

TOOR Hotel (203 Jarvis St.), part of JdV by Hyatt, debuted today just north of Moss Park Armoury. The “upscale” hotel was created by Canadian hotelier Sukhdev Toor and according to a release, “represents the values Canadians are known for globally – hospitality and approachability.” The 33-storey property boasts 232 guest rooms and suites, 181 premium residential rental units, 1,500 sq. ft. fitness centre and yoga studio, valet parking, and other amenities. On-site dining destination Muse Bistro + Bar offers French-inspired dishes for breakfast and dinner.

24 7Even (385 Queen St. W.) isn’t just any ‘round the clock convenience store. In addition to gum, pop, chips and other on-the-go items, there’s “live ramen” (self-serve station), beef patties, and steamed dumplings. TR Blast From the Past: Hand’s up if you remember when this addy was Barney's Open Kitchen.

CLOSED

Another Yorkville resto has shuttered, but not for long. After more than 17 years in the neighbourhood in two locations (17A Yorkville Ave., 90 Avenue Rd.) Blu Ristorante has upped sticks. The fine dining Italian eatery is setting up shop in the Entertainment/Theatre District. Doors are slated to open across from Roy Thomson Hall in early June (214 King St. W.). If you listened to The Tip Off Edition 15, you’d already know. p.s. It’s moving into Signature Fine Dining Restaurant’s recently vacated space, what was years ago, an Il Fornello.

The Food Alley on Queen near Bathurst (615 Queen St. W.) is a recent addition, however one of its vendors, Burning Pizza, is currently closed for renovations.

Chelowich Kabab moved into Roncy Village (167 Roncesvalles Ave.) in 2023.

Chez Paul Crêperie set up shop on Queen West (833 Queen St. W.) a few years back too.

BREAKING NEWS: A restaurant with Michelin ties and a ton of buzz has come and gone in a flash. I Am Doner, the U.K. chain of “award-winning crafted kebabs and bowls” made its debut in the North American market here in the 6ix a few months ago. Founder chef Paul Baron nabbed headlines both here in the Great White North and abroad,  with the first site at Queen and Spadina (433 Queen St W.) pushed to the front of the news cycle - the term “Michelin-trained” chef was everywhere - however if you read my OPEN/CLOSED, you know the market is crowded with places vying for your attention and hard-earned dollars, awards or not. The last post on social was March 11, but the location has already shuttered and is up for lease. A kiosk in the Yonge & Sheppard Centre (4841 Yonge St.) and a Pickering location were also originally scheduled to open. As per the website, North York is “coming soon.” Note: The Yonge & Sheppard Centre spot (4841 Yonge St.) opened three months ago. Listen to this and other exclusive intel in The Tip Off Edition 15.

imperfect Fresh Eats has unveiled locations all across the city and GTA over the years. The one at Queen and Spadina (477 Queen St. W.)? Concluded. Comin’ in hot? Verso Sandwich Co.

It if feels like International Food Garden just opened at Queen and Bathurst (657 Queen St. W.), it did.

While One Pound’s digs north of Davisville (1960 Yonge St., 2nd Fl.) are wrapping up on Saturday, another location is in the works. Watch this space.

The movement in Yorkville these days is off the charts, including temporary closures. Paros (119 Yorkville Ave.), a relatively new addition, was lauded by the glitterati when it opened  the end of September 2023. The Greek restaurant and bar is closed for now, slated to reopen “soon.”

Slayer Burger’s Midtown home comes to an end on March 30. To get in on the hard rock inspired fare, head to locations in East York (1400 O’Connor Dr.) and near Queen and Broadview across from The Opera House (739 Queen St. E.).

St. Lo (26 Market St.) arrived in the St. Lawrence Market ‘hood in 2021. It’s coming to a close as of April 27.

THE TIP OFF - EDITION 15

This week’s 5 exclusive and breaking news stories include some big surprises.

THIS JUST IN:

A boutique hotel is about to launch directly across from Trinity Bellwoods Park, but you won’t have to be a tourist to reap the benefits. Coming soon: Plush Cafe & Bar (897 Queen St. W.), accompanied by selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Go ahead, call it a comeback. Squirly’s Bar & Grill (807 Queen St. W.), the Queen West watering hole est. in 1988, closed for what seemed for good back in November. Newsflash: The neighbourhood haunt is back in business with new ownership, interior, food and vibe.

Another Yorkville resto has shuttered, but not for long. After more than 17 years in the neighbourhood in two locations ( 17A Yorkville Ave., 90 Avenue Rd.) Blu Ristorante has upped sticks. The fine dining Italian eatery Is setting up shop in the Entertainment/Theatre District. Doors are slated to open across from Roy Thomson Hall in early June (214 King St. W.).

Also set to arrive in the Entertainment District, stay tuned for Blessing In Disguise Bistro & Bar, dropping shortly at the corner of John and Richmond (150 John St.).

BREAKING NEWS: A restaurant with Michelin ties and a ton of buzz has come and gone in a flash. I Am Doner, the U.K. chain of “award-winning crafted kebabs and bowls” made its debut in the North American market here in the 6ix a few months ago. Warning: This week’s arrivals, closures, and news may cause a wild ride of emotions. In other words: Buckle up.

OPEN

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit rolls into Markham again on April 1, this time at McCowan and Bur Oak (9570 McCowan Rd., Unit 3).

Harbourfront’s culinary offerings continue to evolve with the arrival of more fine dining. Grand opening for Dil Tak (8 York St., Unit 4) is happening tomorrow. TR Trivia: You might know owner/chef Mani Panwar from his other joint, Dil Se* on Roncy (335 Roncesvalles Ave.), and previously of Bombay Bhel Indian Restaurant & Bar. *Recommended by Michelin.

Maki is so 2014. These days, it’s all about hand rolls. For the latest temaki-focused destination, head to The Hand Roll Sushi Bar (717 Bay St., Unit D). Grand opening is Sunday. What to order: While hand rolls are front and centre, other selections include poke bowls, sushi tacos, and aburi oshizushi - aka torched pressed sushi.

ISO authentic Jamaican fare? TR Pro Tip: Look no further than Kelly’s Restaurant & Bar on St. Clair, west of Caledonia (1680 St. Clair Ave. W.).

Old-school Korean donkatsu is the name of the game at Yonge and Gerrard’s new Lucky Donkatsu (415 Yonge St., Unit 103).

Luma Coffee at the corner of Runnymede and Annette (516 Annette St.) features a wide array of beverages from Einspenners to Iced Hojicha Lattes, with sandwiches and baked goods also in effect.

Nord Lyon’s third outpost (665 Queen St. W.) lands at an iconic corner - Queen and John, where Starbucks stood for decades. TR Fun Facts: The french patisserie also boasts a location down the street at Queen and Bathurst, in addition to a new spot at The Well. And stay tuned - another is in the works at Union Station.

Susu Siam softly opened Friday in Scarborough at Midland and McNicoll (390 Silver Star Blvd., Unit 123-128). What to expect? Modern, “innovative” Thai fare, for starters.

Top Gun Burgers was supposed to be all done in Kensington (251 Augusta Ave.) as of a few weeks ago. At least that was the plan. Find the burger joint back in action down the block at Knockout Chicken (207 Augusta Ave., Unit 200), home of affordable chicken and comfort food combos.

Grand opening for “Toronto’s first luxurious spa with a non-alcoholic tea cocktail bar“ is happening now. Check out Yue Spa in Unionville (4261 Hwy 7 E, Unit A7-12).

Billiards are a hot commodity right now and getting hotter. Downtown’s 8Diamondz (31 St Joseph St.) offers darts, air hockey and full bar, in addition to plenty of pool tables.

CLOSED

Want the latest on acclaimed chef Antonio Park’s eponymous restaurant AP on the 51st floor of Bay & Bloor’s Manulife Centre (55 Bloor St. W.)? Listen to Edition 14 of THE TIP OFF on my new TORONTO RESTAURANTS | THE PODCAST, available on on YouTube, Spotify, Apple and other platforms where you get your podcasts.

After nine years, Leslieville’s Barrio Cerveceria (884 Queen St. E.) is wrapping things up this spring. Final service is April 1st. TR Insider: This follows my report last month that neighbouring resto Frankie’s closed. The establishment went on the publicly share the news this week.

As I reported last week, Toronto nightclub Bodega on King (510 King St. W., Lower Level) comes to an end on Saturday.

Family-owned specialty grocer and destination for Eastern European grub, Denninger’s is saying goodbye after over a decade in Oakville (2400 Lakeshore Rd. W.) on Saturday. Luckily, outposts remain in Burlington and Hamilton.

E-Street Deli (654 Queen St. W.), transformed from dessert destination chain Sweetie Pie last year. Despite the city’s spike in stuffed handhelds lately, the sub shop is no more. Numerous SP locations are still in operation throughout the city.

On Monday, Fattoush Sandwich Club (253 Gerrard St. E.) shared doors are closing March 30. Silver lining: They also included “Stay tuned on what’s next!” Watch this space.

On Tuesday, Momiji Kishi, co-founder of HotBlack Coffee, posted on social media the original location at Queen and McCaul (245 Queen St. W.) will conclude service Sunday, for now. The coffeeshop of nine years has, according to the post, “sort of been sailing blind-folded in the middle of the ocean, mainly because with legal issues,” following the sudden death of co-founder Jimson Bienenstock in 2022. The beloved cafe introduced other locations throughout the years including a Midtown pop-up, then more permanent digs a few doors over, Bloor West Village’s Halycon, and at Yonge and Charles inside The Andore House. TR Pro Tip: Make sure to follow here and socials (links below) for updates.

BREAKING NEWS: The King West closures have been relentless lately, both temporary (Buca, Vela around the corner) and for good - often within steps of one another (See: Casa Mezcal, Dasha, and District Eatery). The latest to conclude service: Kissa that launched at King & Portland (619 King St W.) Summer 2023. Fashioned after Japanese speakeasy-style haunts, it was part of a wave of listening bars across the city offering small plates, cocktails, karaoke, and a place for audiophiles to commune. Last month I reported that the restaurant and karaoke side of things had come to an end. At that time, the dance/nightclub portion was still operational. The venture has since switched to an event space. If this all sounds vaguely familiar, it’s strikingly similar to my recent breaking news about Dasha across the street, that also wound up the resto and karaoke part of the biz, moving to solely private events.
