How to organize your own write-in event for Script Frenzy or NaNoWriMo

240/365 National Novel Writing Month begins

What is a write-in? A proud tradition of both NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and Screnzy (Script Frenzy), write-ins are small gatherings of writers with the express purpose of getting as much written as possible. Such events usually have some kind of food and/or drink available and usually include inspirational challenges such as word sprints or wars, often for prizes. Their focus is not just fun but also productivity.

While most...

Script Frenzy 2011

All month long, I'll be participating in Script Frenzy, a writing challenge to write 100 pages in 30 days.

If you'll be joining me during this writing extravaganza, please consider taking a look at my Screnzy blog or my daily Script Frenzy tumblr. If you just are curious how far along I am, you can watch the little widget to the right of this post.

Expect a higher than usual number of script writing posts this month before we return to our regularly scheduled programming in...

Script Frenzy Advanced Page & Word Count Calculator Widget (now with charts!)

I know that some of you out there are as obsessive as me when it comes to trying to track your progress and work habits during Script Frenzy so I decided to share my personal calculator. It's simple but very powerful. (If you aren't sure why you should be taking such an in depth look into your daily writing habit over the course of Screnzy, I invite you to read this article.)

This calculator will work in Open Office, Microsoft Excel or Google Docs, depending on what you use...

My biggest fear about working from home

One of the greatest comics of the modern era is The Oatmeal (who has a book out, you should hit that). I love most of his comics but one of my all time favorites is Why working from home is both awesome and horrible because of its relevance to my life. I think a lot of people think of working from home as some kind of paid vacation where you just sit around in your PJs watching TV, do no work at all, and money comes in from the money fairy. Trying to explain the bad parts of w...

Page-a-thon? Get pledges & sponsors for your Script Frenzy project!

Image by Getty Images via @daylifeWant to give yourself a little extra motivation to get that script done? Get a Screnzy sponsor!

Just like a walk-a-thon or other fund-raising project, you can get a sponsor for your script in progress, getting friends and family to pledge a donation to The Office of Light and Letters (which is the non-profit behind NaNoWriMo, Script Frenzy and the Young Writers Program) program if you complete the challenge. You can get sponsors as an individual or as a group.

I love this idea! ...

Script Frenzy Desktop Background Wallpaper Calendars (2011)

Last year, I received a request for Script Frenzy Desktop Wallpaper. Apparently these are very popular with NaNoWriMo participants but the people who usually make them in November don't make them for Screnzy so there was a need and I decided to be a sport and fill it. They are decorative calendars for the month of April with the expected page count for each day of Screnzy.

I've made up a few basic designs but if you'd prefer another color or background image, please just let...

Script Frenzy 2009: Liverpool Write-In, Day One

Man, just feed me some caffeine and point me at some HTML and boy howdee, things get done!

Anyway, if you've been reading this blog since last year, you'll remember when I launched an entirely separate blog just about Script Frenzy (the post was from March 16, 2010 but I deleted it to avoid confusion). Well, over the course of the year, I sort of realized that was stupid of me because then all the traffic and SEO and whatnot I was getting for those posts weren't doing me a...
