Odds and Ends

I haven't done a random post like this in ages. I've been all professional and organized with blog posts that have topics and everything. I'm so fancy! ;-) Anyway, here's some random things that don't deserve their own blog posts…

I've been undecided on all the Muppet Movie trailers (see Green with Envy, The Fuzzy Pack and Being Green). I have to confess to laughing like mad at the "Kermit the F…rog" delivery of the VO guy in Green with Envy and I love the end of Being Green...

The Love of Three Oranges excerpts: Comedic scenes for drama or speech competitions, classrooms & forensics

Orange fruit and cross section

Image via Wikipedia

You want to perform Three Oranges in some kind of shortened setting, maybe a drama competition, classroom scene practice or 1-Act or scene festival. But where to begin?

Let's talk scenes. You could really use any single scene you wanted for drama class scene practice or competition but I'm going to take a moment to highlight the ones I think would work best.

Large Cast Scenes

Act 1, Scene 3. The Ball Scene. This is usually my #1 top recommendation for...

The Love of Three Oranges excerpts: Competition & classroom friendly comedic monologues

I should have done a post on this ages ago because it's long been a FAQ. You want to perform Three Oranges in some kind of shortened setting, maybe a drama competition, classroom scene practice or some kind of 1-Act or scene festival. But where to begin? To keep this post from getting insanely long, I'm going to split this into two posts. Up in this post? Monologues!

Ah, monologues. The staple of auditions, drama classes and drama competitions everywhere! (Obviously, we're...

Attention span of a gnat

Husband is peacefully watching TV. I burst into the room.

Me: For years I've been saying that I have the attention span of a gnat to mean I have no focus but it just occurred to me that that makes no sense. Gnats have laser focus! They decide that they want to get into your eye and they just full on commit to that for the rest of the day.

Husband stares at me like he doesn't know who I even am for several long seconds. I nod to him and leave the room. We never speak of this...

I don't even really like this song that much but I may have written my entire book around it…

The Love of Three Oranges: the fairy tale that became a commedia dell arte scenario that became a play

For some reason, people always try to say that my play is based on the Sergei Prokofiev's opera, The Love for Three Oranges (1919). It isn't. Both my Three Oranges and his are based on the same source material: Carlo Gozzi's The Love of Three Oranges.

For the record, I have never even seen the Prokofiev opera. Every few months I feel guilty about this and try to listen to The March from The Love for Three Oranges and only to immediately forget what it sounds like again.

But I w...

*Waves white flag* OK, May, you win.

This was me this month:

Metaphorically speaking of course.

Let's get this over with: I didn't meet my goal of 76k for May. My secondary goal of 100k? Yeah, that wasn't happening either.

In the end, I did manage to churn out over 50k words for the month which is still pretty decent all things considered. I also passed last year's original goal for the year a few days ago and it's only March which feels great from a big picture standpoint.

Could I have hit it? Totally. Even with...
