Currently reading – A Book of Common Prayer, by Joan Didion. Born in 1934, Didion has been a reporter, novelist, and memoirist. She is best known for her memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking, about the deaths of her husband and daughter. This is a novel.

Currently reading – Coyote, by Colin Winnette. Winnette is an American writer and the author of six books of fiction. I got this book free when I submitted to a short fiction contest, so I figured I’d read it.

Currently reading – Red at the Bone, by Jacqueline Woodson. Woodson is an African-American writer born in 1963. She mostly writes children’s books and YA fiction, but this is an adult novel.

Currently reading – Omeros by Derek Walcott. Born in 1930, Sir Derek Alton Walcott was a Saint Lucian poet and playwright. He won the Nobel Prize in 1992 and died in 2017. This book is an 8,000 line epic poem mixing a critique of colonialism with classical myth.

Currently reading – Quarrel & Quandary, by Cynthia Ozick. Ozick is a novelist, short story writer, and essayist born in 1928. This book of essays is most famous for her piece criticizing the commodification of Anne Frank.

Currently reading – The Actual, by Saul Bellow. Bellow was a Canadian-American writer born in 1915 and awarded the Nobel Prize in 1976. He died in 2005. This slim novella is about a late life romance.

Currently reading – There There, by Tommy Orange. Orange is a Native-American writer born in 1982. This novel is about various Native-American characters on their way to a Pow-Wow in Oakland, CA. It was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2019.

Currently reading – The Garden Party and Other Stories by Katherine Mansfield. Mansfield was born in New Zealand in 1888, but moved to England at age nineteen. A bit of a rival to Virginia Woolf, who envied her, Mansfield died of tuberculosis in 1917 at age thirty-four.
