Currently reading – Against Interpretation by Susan Sontag, one of the most important intellectuals of the second half of the 20th century. This was her first book of essays, published in 1966, and it has been in print ever since.

Currently reading – “Rusty Brown” by Chris Ware. Ware is an AMAZING graphic novelist. Last time I read his work was almost twenty years ago when I lived in San Francisco and plowed through his “Jimmy Corrigan.”

Currently reading – “Gorilla, My Love” by Toni Cade Bambara. Born in Harlem in 1939, Bambara was an author and activist. She died in 1995.

Currently reading – “Myth and Meaning” by Claude Levi-Strauss. Levi-Strauss (1908-2009) was Belgian born and the most important anthropologist of the 20th century. He argued that there were no structural differences between the so-called “savage” mind and the “civilized” mind. This book is about the centrality of myth in culture.

Currently reading – “The Refugees” by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Nguyen is a Vietnamese-American writer who came to the United States in 1975 as a refugee. This is a collection of short stories.

Currently reading – “Mumbo Jumbo” by Ishmael Reed. Reed is an American novelist, poet, and essayist born in 1938. This novel is a satirical vision of black and white relations in the 1920s.

Currently reading – “Mrs. Spring Fragrance” by Sui Sin Far. “Sui Sin Far” was the pen name of Edith Maude Eaton, born in 1865, the daughter of an English ship merchant and a Chinese mother who had once been a slave before being rescued by missionaries. Eaton wrote about Chinese-American immigrants when anti-Chinese sentiment was very high.

Currently reading – “Lighthead” by Terrance Hayes. Hayes is an American poet born in 1971, and this book won the National Book Award for Poetry in 2010.
