Currently reading – Romance in Marseille, by Claude McKay. Born in 1889, McKay was a Jamaican writer and poet, and a leading figure in the Harlem Renaissance. This novel, recently reissued, was one of the first overtly queer works in the African-American tradition. McKay died in 1948.

Currently reading – Shahr-E-Jaanaan: City of the Beloved, by Adeeba Shahid Talukder. Talukder is a young Pakistani-American poet, and in this book she uses Persian and Urdu mythology to examine her own grief.

Currently reading – Letters to a Young Novelist, by Mario Vargas Llosa. Born in 1936, Llosa is a Peruvian writer and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. He is also known for once sucker-punching fellow Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Currently reading – Welcome to Hard Times, by E.L. Doctorow. Born in 1931, Doctorow was a writer known for his historical fiction, and this is a Western novel. He died in 2015.

Currently reading – Native Guard by Natasha Trethewey. Born in 1966, Trethewey is an American poet and was America’s Poet Laureate in 2012 and again in 2013. This book won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
