Currently reading – Ornamental, by Juan Cárdenas, translated by Lizzie Davis. Born in 1978, Cárdenas is a Colombian art critic, curator, and author. This slim novel is about a drug trial for a recreational substance that only affects women.

Currently reading – Not a Novel: A Memoir in Pieces, by Jenny Erpenbeck. Born in 1967, Erpenbeck is a prizewinning German writer and opera director. This book is sort of a mix between autofiction and personal essays.

Currently reading – The Tragedy of King Christophe, a play by Aimé Césaire. Césaire was a French Afro-Caribbean author and activist from Martinique. This play dramatizes the life of Henri Christophe, an African slave who rose to the rank of general in the Haitian revolution only to become an oppressor himself.

Currently reading – Silas Marner, by George Eliot. “George Eliot” was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, one of England’s greatest authors, born in 1819. Most famous for her giant novel Middlemarch, Eliot’s work is known for its realism and psychological complexity. She died in 1880.

Currently reading – The Wedding of Zein, by Tayeb Salih. Born in 1929, Salih was one of Sudan’s greatest authors. This book contains a few of his short stories. I’ve read one of his novels, and he is a great writer. Salih died in 2009.

Currently reading – Apples from the Desert, by Savyon Liebrecht. Liebrecht is an Israeli author born in Germany to Polish Holocaust survivors in 1948. This is a book of her short stories.

Currently reading – Civilization and Its Discontents, by Sigmund Freud. Born in Austria in 1856, Freud was the father of psychoanalysis, among other things. He’s a mixed bag, and was a misogynist, but he does have his insights. I’ve had this book for a while, so I figured I’d read it.

Currently reading – Frankenstein in Baghdad, by Ahmed Saadawi. Born in 1973, Saadawi is an Iraqi novelist, poet, and documentary filmmaker. This surreal novel is about a scavenger in Baghdad who constructs a monster out of the body parts left from bombings.

Currently reading – A Ghost in the Throat, by Doireann Ní Ghríofa. Born in 1981, Ní Ghríofa is an Irish poet and writer. This book is made up of poetry (in English, but side by side with Irish versions), essays, and personal observations.
