Book Baner EP 60: Kelly Florence Interview

Hello My Happy People,Today I get to chat with author, academic, podcaster, and theater savant, Kelly Florence. We got to chatting so fast in this interview we forgot to give her an introduction during the interview so I had to add it all in at the beginning.

Kelly is quite the well-rounded individual. She teaches communication at Lake Superior College in Minnesota and hosts the Be a Better Communicator podcast. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in theatre and a master's degree in communication. She is active in theater and has worked on productions including Carrie The Musical and Treasure Island.

Kelly, along with her writing partner Meg Hafdahl, has co-authored five of the eighteen books currently in publication in The Science of Series . The pair will be publishing a sixth book, ,The Science of Agatha Christie, very soon. They also co-host the Horror Rewind podcast which was called "the best horror podcast out there" by Film Daddy.

Friday Funnies: Stress!!!

Hello My happy People,

While I know stress is not "funny" it is a good topic to have for Friday Funnies. We all have stress to varying degrees every day of our lives, even when we are not conscious of it. Even good things can cause stress in the body and tax our systems in ways we do not even realize are happening. Which is just even more reason to seek out great (or even so-so) "funnies" on a regular basis to help relieve even that unconscious stress (a great reason to subscribe to my blogs)!

Q: Why do you go to the house of mirrors when you are feeling stressed? A: I just find it a really great place to reflect.

Q: What is the easiest way for a stressed astronaut to unwind and decompress? A: He just needs to open the outside airlock. He'll decompress instantly.

Q: What stresses out coral get?

A: Current events!

Q: What did your doctor say when you told her you were stressed because of your chronic constipation? A: She prescribed me a relaxative.

Q: Why didn't the rancher stress over his cows having really short legs? A: There was no need to worry, the steaks were low.

Q: Why was the computer stressed when it got home from work? A: Because it had a hard drive.

Q: Didn't you use to rub your hair together when you were stressed?

A: Yes, but I started dreading the consequences.

Q: What did one tectonic plate say to the other tectonic plate?

A: I've been so stressed lately I've started having tremors and it's all your fault!

And last but not least ...

Q: Were you stressed out when your phone's battery died?

A: Yes, but then I realized all I needed was an outlet.

Manic Monday: Doin' the Work!

Hello My Happy People,

We had a good weekend here, I hope yours was great! Today I felt a bit like I was back in Kansas. I got up, the sun was actually shining, then a storm rolled in. We had some rain/snow mix falling for a bit. Then the sun came back out, but it was still crazy cold outside. Then a bit of a wind storm kicked up and finally a few sprinkles fell and the day was over. The only thing I was missing was a tornado siren and I would have felt right at home!

Friday Funnies: Married!

Hello My Happy People,

We are so busy here with family stuff today that I am wrote this on Tuesday because I have no idea when we will be home. P.R. and I have been doing all those things you are supposed to do as you get older to prepare to keep getting even older. I went first, because I am the one who is most likely to have trouble with these sorts of things, but now that I have finished all my appointments, it's P.R.'s turn.

It's nice to have someone to help you go through all of these kinds of things. For so many years, I was the only one planning for my future and it's nice to have someone to share that all with. However ... marriage is not all roses and chocolates no matter how much you love each other. That is because marriage takes two people and no matter what, if two people spend enough time together eventually they will get on each other's nerves about something.

Most times, it's small things that build up and just finally drive you crazy. The real trick is being able to remind yourself what things actually matter and what does not in the grand scheme of things. It also helps to have a partner who likes to play video games like Call of Duty or Fortnite. This way when you are driving each other nuts, you can just go in the game and kill off each other's characters and let off some steam. It is surprisingly cathartic!

It also helps to have a good sense of humor about it all and to help with that, here are some jokes about marriage.

A. When a newly married man looks happy, we know why. When a 30-year married man looks happy, we wonder why.

A. They're really hard to get started, often emit horrible odors, and your have to direct them everywhere you want them to go.

Q. Wife, "The new neighbor always kisses his wife as he leaves for work. Why don't you do that?"

A. Husband, "That seems a bit much, I haven't even met the woman!"

Q. Why do you keep reading our marriage license?

A. I'm looking for an expiration date.

Q. Do you feel like you married Mrs. Right?

A. Yes, but at the time I didn't know her first name was "Always".

Q. Why the Queen of hearts agree to marry the King of hearts?

A. She felt they were perfectly suited for each other.

Q. Did you see where two antennas fell in love and got married?

A. I heard about that. Apparently the ceremony was boring, but the reception was excellent.

Q. Does your husband ever cook for you?

A: He does, In fact he cooks for me like I’m a goddess. He places burnt offerings before me every night.

A. Even the cake was in tiers.

Hello My Happy People,

In today's episode, I get to chat with Dr. David J Gibson. He is a professor of botany at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and holds a PhD in Plant Biology and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB).

David has spent years doing field research in botany and has written a number of articles and books, mostly focusing grasslands and ecology. However, his most recent work focuses on the forensic study of plants as a means to murder and an aid in investigating crimes in fiction and actual criminal cases.

I got to talk to David about his new book, ,Planting Clues: How Plants Solve Crimes, which is available now at booksellers. He is an incredible wealth of knowledge about forensic botany and where to find a decent pint in Illinois.

Friday Funnies: Tech Support & Tears!

Hello My Happy People,

This will be a very short blog today. I am so far behind. I have been having some fantastic interviews this week for my Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt podcast and I have more next week. I have updated my graphics for the podcast as well and have seen engagement going up daily and so of COURSE this is the time that my all professional email accounts would choose to go haywire.

It took 4 connections with various tech support entities, a lot of work from my IT architect husband (THANK YOU SWEETIE!), and a guess on my part for the right code I had to plug in to reconnect my domain MX file. No sooner had I hit save when an email came through again. You cannot imagine the level of frustration I have had the these last two weeks trying to fix this issue. Somehow my website was getting tagged as spam by Google. **sigh** Technology can be great and it can be SO frustrating!

Anyway, I don't know about you but I could use a few laughs so let's get to the jokes!!

Book Banter EP 57: Lance SA Nielsen part 2 of 2

Hello My Happy People!

In today's episode, I finish my chat with my good friend, Lance Steen Anthony Nielsen. Between the common jokes, we attempt to focus today's chat more on Lance's screenplays and theater work.

A bit about Lance, he was born in South Africa and adopted at a young age by an English mother and Danish father. Raised in Kingston-upon-Thames in the United Kingdom, it was here, according to his website, "... he spent much of his time engaged in designing fictional worlds for role-playing games, rolling dice, renting videos, going to the cinema and forgetting to tell his mother what time he would be home when he went out. While under the influence of many pints JRR Tolkien, he made his first attempts at writing a book series, The Prophecy of the Witch-King."

Since then, Lance has written many amazing works for stage, screen, and print. He chats about them all with Dianne in episodes 56 & 57, be sure to catch them both.
