How is Your Margin?
Marketplace mission begins with margin. Unfortunately, margin has become a casualty in our hyper-linked, hyper-distracted world. For some reason, we think we need to be as busy as possible to feel productive, or in some cases, to meet our need for affirmation. However, living at this pace comes at a steep cost.
It All Starts with Margin
Most of us want to feel like our lives make a difference, but our schedules are so packed that we eventually find ourselves simply trying to keep our heads above water.
Knowing We Don’t Know – Proverbs 14:12
Have you ever considered the power that comes from knowing that you don’t know?
There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way to death. Proverbs 14:12 CSB
When we trust the Bible, and consider it to be the word of God, then we come face-to-face with statements like today’s passage. And we realize we aren’t as strong or smart or powerful as we think we are.

Outside the Camp – Hebrews 13:12-13
How different must we be to trust and follow Jesus?
Jesus was humiliated and killed. He was ridiculed. He allowed himself to be beaten and killed by the very people he was saving. Are we willing to endure the same kind of hostility? Are we even called to endure disgrace like that?
He gave us grace, but he suffered disgrace. Interesting thought. What are we willing to endure because we follow him?

Working With God – 1 Corinthians 3:9
What does it mean to work with God?
For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. 1 Corinthians 3:9 NASB
God is doing the work. We labor with him. but the work, the schedule, the timing, the results are all up to Him.
This passage is often interpreted to be pointed at pastors building churches, but this applies to our lives as well. The “ministry” part of our life is what lives on forever.

Waiting on God – Ecclesiastes 3:1
How are you at waiting?
There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1
I don’t wait well. Often, I think God makes me wait to teach me something, but I’ve failed the waiting class so much, that I really believe he’s given up on me. But the other thing I need to remember is that things take time. This passage in Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 helps drive this point home.
Do you face a circumstance where God seems to be much more patient than you?

Trust God Under Pressure – Proverbs 29:25
Are you in a work situation that you dread?
The fear of mankind is a snare, but the one who trusts in the Lord is protected. Proverbs 29:25 CSB
Do you ever dread workplace pressure? I remember having to make presentations before bosses or being chewed out by irate customers. I was fired twice. I would get into these situations where I dreaded what would happen next.
I didn’t often call it fear, but that’s what it was.

Serving the Least of These – At Work!
Matthew chapter 25:31-46 recounts one of the last parables Jesus taught before his death and resurrection. In it, he gives insight into how we will be judged when he returns. Verses 35-36 spell out the categories that the righteous King judged by:
'For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' (ESV)
Practical needs such as hunger, thirst, feeling alone, being in need of provision, suffering physically, and being in captivity are all necessities that anyone is capable of responding to.

Power From Weakness – 2 Corinthians 12:9
Do you focus on your strengths? Let’s contrast a modern view of strengths with the Apostle Paul’s perspective.
Jesus told Paul that his power was completed, perfected in weakness. That means that our job isn’t to be the coolest, or the smartest or to win. Our job is to look weak, to look silly, to follow Jesus no matter what. Jesus’ power is made complete by becoming visible, doing the work of Christ without any strength that came through human hands.

Our Desires Limit Us – 2 Corinthians 6:12
What do you desire? How do your desires create limits?
“We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections.” The word translated affections comes from a reference to the stomach or gut.
Paul may be speaking about how the Corinthians were drawn to others more than Paul. He was, after all giving them some difficult news.
