Receive the Word Implanted – James 1:21

Receive the Word Implanted – James 1:21

How much does the Word of God invade your mind and your life?

James tells us to receive the word implanted in us. How do we do that? Well, it begins with turning away from filthiness and evil or wickedness. These things are evil, dark, negative. It seems like more and more of our world is getting dark and selfish.

Then he says, “in humility receive the word implanted.” Humility is required.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14 (NIV)

Crafted With the Utmost Care

Although in this Psalm David is praising the Lord for how he himself was made, it holds true that God made everyone with the same care, precision, and love.

No Possibility of Profit – James 1:27

No Possibility of Profit – James 1:27

Right after James talks about people who hear the word but don’t do what Jesus said, he goes into a conversation about religion. James won’t allow the reader to separate living like we believe Jesus from the call to obey him. Our life must prove what we claim to believe.

The word translated “religion” is used in these 2 verses, 26 and 27 and one other place. It means external observances of ritualistic practices.

Avoid Trouble and Gossip – Proverbs 16:28

Avoid Trouble and Gossip – Proverbs 16:28

What are you for? And what are you against?

The NASB says a perverse man spreads strife. Other translations call this person dishonest, contrary. The Message calls this person a troublemaker. “Troublemakers start fights; gossips break up friendships.

At work, would you be called a troublemaker? Are you contrary? I think of a perverse person as someone who is against things. As Christ-followers, I hope we’re known for being for people.

Planning And Wisdom – Proverbs 16:25

Planning And Wisdom – Proverbs 16:25

Are you a planner?

Do you figure out where you’re going in advance? I’m a planner. I want to always have an idea of what to do next. Or, if I don’t have an idea, then the next action is to make a plan. When I have a plan, I’m not stuck. I can move forward.

There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way to death.

Trust Beats Pride Every Day – Proverbs 16:20

Trust Beats Pride Every Day – Proverbs 16:20

How can we beat the pride in our lives? So I’ve spent some time the past couple of days dealing with pride, first in Micah 6:8 and then in Proverbs 16. But the answer to my pride problem is right here in verse 20.

When we trust in the Lord, the world fits. We take our place in it and we do what he would have us do. It boils down to trusting ourselves or trusting God.

Pride Before Destruction – Proverbs 16:18

Pride Before Destruction – Proverbs 16:18

What are you proud of? How careful should we be when it comes to pride?

I’ve been a Christ-follower for over 30 years, and I still struggle with pride every day. My worst days are the days when I don’t struggle. I just go with the flow. My own pride and arrogance are very intrenched in who I am.

And even though God made me, I’m commanded and warned all throughout scripture to avoid pride.

Favor and Influence in the Marketplace

Favor and Influence in the Marketplace

Have you ever heard the saying “favor isn’t fair?”

Followers of Christ live with unmerited (and if we’re honest, sometimes undeserving) favor. And it’s not because we’re more intelligent or better than anyone else; it is simply because God is a good Father, and he takes care of those who love and trust him.

Our God-given favor often highlights the gifts God has given to us and places us in the presence of people who have the ability to change our lives.

Walk Humbly – Micah 6:8

Walk Humbly – Micah 6:8

What does God ask of his followers?

Do justice: Do you ever notice how the argument about what’s right or not only exists at the fringes? Often, we argue about how Government should behave or how others should behave. Could it be that “do justice” simply means to do what we know to be right? What’s best for others? Often we have a pretty good and common idea. Would you say you “do justice?”

Love kindness (or mercy): Do you lean toward the things that are kind?
