Steam . . . what?

Steam . . . what?
Steampunk is a sub-genre of sci-fi and fantasy born in the eighties from its close cousin cyberpunk. It’s also called Victorian sci-fi because it’s usually set in the Victorian Era and contains anachronist technology (rigorously steam-powered) and alternate history.It's a mesh-up of genres where you can have ladies in bustles travelling on carriages, men in frock coats, but also aliens, zombies, and Highlanders (it’s always good to have a Highlander in a book if you ask me.) If you’ve seen films like Sherlock Holmes-A Game of Shadows by Guy Ritchie, The Mortal Engines or Hugo, you might have an idea of what steampunk is.  Although steam cars, steamships, and automatons already existed in the nineteenth century, these machines are made more powerful in a steampunk story. 

Difference engines , a.k.a. Lovelace machines (precursor of computers) existed as well, created by Lady Lovelace who’s considered a pioneer in computer engineering. Some steampunk books aren’t set in the Victoria Era though. Books by Italian author Stefano Benni and the Unnatural History Series by J. Green are set in modern times where oil-fuelled technology is swapped with steam-powered gadgets. As an author, I fell in love with the genre because it’s always a bit funny, has many sci-fi elements, and lots of action. It also opens a whole world of possibilities, changing history and creating new settings.  For example, my New Camelot steampunk series is set in Arthurian Britannia, five hundred years after King Arthur’s death, and has clockwork knights and mechanical horses. Then I thought, why not setting a steampunk novel here in Auckland? This is how my Auckland Steampunk Series was born. Setting the story in Auckland gave me the opportunity to add a bit of Maori culture and introducing Maori mythology as well.While not wildly popular, steampunk has earned a good chunk of the book market even in the romance genre. Steampunk romance by author Bec McMaster is conquering the romance/sci-fi market.Hope I’ve convinced you to try a steampunk novel. You won’t be disappointed.Thank you for reading.
