Waiting in line to see Santa. They’re starting to question the logic of a dude flying around the entire Earth in one night, so this’ll probably be the last year.

Tumblr CEO David Karp is leaving the company after more than 10 years

Tumblr CEO David Karp is leaving the company after more than 10 years:

This news hit me a little hard. I mean he’s just some young white billionaire CEO, why should it matter?

It matters because he’s our young white billionaire CEO… That doesn’t sound right. Let me try again.

David Karp and developer Marco Arment made Tumblr. They made a microblogging platform that catered to creative people and fans of creativity. And even when Yahoo! came in waving a tons and tons of money around, they kept it simple, they kept it personal, they kept it weird.

I’ve said before that I consider you folks a huge part of my parenting journey. That happened because of the environment Karp championed here. Any and every interest, fandom, and obsession has a home and a community on Tumblr. When I found myself at home with two baby boys and no clue what I was doing, Tumblr led me to you. Yes, you.

I’ve had a handful of social media jobs and the thing that got me hired every time was the fact that I speak Tumblr. That’s because, no matter what sub-community you’re a part of, the language of Tumblr is specific. In that way, on Tumblr we’re all free to be whatever we want, but we’re all Tumblr nerds. It was beautifully inclusive and exclusive at the same time. Try doing that without pulling a hammy, Twitter.

And I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the fact that Tumblr’s fostering of creativity from all types led to success beyond the reblog. The list of people who were able to parlay Tumblr content into other forms of media is nearly endless.

And yes, I’m on that list. When I started my Tumblr to chronicle my victories and shortcomings as a father, I was a struggling freelance writer. Now, thanks in a large part to Tumblr, I’m a bestselling author. Of multiple books. It’s fucking nuts. Look, here’s proof!…

I never met Karp, but I did meet (both in person and online) a handful of Tumblr staffers. They’re all pretty rad and I’m still e-friends with a few. Whenever I had a tech issue or a request, I always felt like the staff gave a shit. I’m not sure how much of that personal approach was a credit to Karp, but it was his house, his rules.

I don’t know what will become of Tumblr after Karp’s departure. I hope it will continue to evolve at its own pace. I hope it will stay weird. But no matter what happens, David Karp created a platform that unquestionably changed my life and the lives of others for the better.

So thanks, David. I feel like the most appropriate way to show my appreciation for your creation is with a gif from one of the fandoms…

(I also find it appropriate that while searching for a gif to end this post I was inundated with porn. Oh, Tumblr.)

I am thankful for…

My wife: She is my biggest advocate, my strongest supporter, and my best friend.

My kids: They teach me as much as (if not more than) I teach them.

You guys: The tumblr parenting community has been my go-to group for any and all questions and concerns, even the ones that have nothing to do with parenting.

Carbs: Just because.

Bourbon: Because kids.

Happy Thanksgiving, you weirdos.
