Kelly Sue DeConnick Was Once on A Men in Comics Panel!
Kelly Sue DeConnick is a force to be reckoned with, plain and simple. Portland-based with her husband, Matt Fraction, their two children, DeConnick is a writer and creator of all things awesome, including Bitch Planet, which she helms with artist/creator Valentine De Landro, and Pretty Deadly, with art by fellow creator Emma Rios.
Self-proclaimed “feminist,” DeConnick has issued the following advice to women entering the industry: “Be terrifying.”
While Kelly Sue now works in independent comics, she has a notable track record with Marvel titles like Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel, as well as DC titles, including Supergirl. DeConnick has also served as an editor of several Manga titles making their way into the States.
A few weeks back we sat down with DeConnick to discuss how she got her start in comics, her approach to writing, and her collaboration with her co-creators — but we also ended up talking about children’s birthday parties because OF COURSE WE DID.
(From here on out, we may refer to her as “Kelly Sue DeConnick – Writer, Editor, Events Clown”)
We love sitting down with incredible creators and we hope you love the conversations they let us put on the Internet! Enjoy this chat, and give a huge thanks to Kelly Sue for being so cool to hang with us!

Dinner Party to premiere at Sundance Film Festival
A few week’s back we gave you your first look at our new virtual reality project DINNER PARTY. Today we’re excited to announce that DINNER PARTY will have it’s official premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival! DINNER PARTY is a VR experience we’ve created with RYOT Films, Telexist VR, Circle of Confusion, and Thunder Studios and supported by Technicolor and the Sundance Institute. Written by Charlotte Stoudt (Homeland, Open Secret) and Laura Wexler (Fire in a Canebrake: The Last Mass Lynching in America) and directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Bashir’s Dream, La Granja), DINNER PARTY is the story of the first widely publicized report of an alien abduction in America.
We’re super proud of the team and we can’t wait for you all to get a look. Below is the official press release:
VIRTUAL REALITY THRILLER ‘DINNER PARTY’ FROM SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT, RYOT, AND TELEXIST TO PREMIERE AT SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL
Los Angeles, CA (December 6, 2017) – Earlier today Sundance Institute announced that Dinner Party, a virtual reality thriller based on the first reported UFO abduction in the US, will premiere and screen at New Frontier at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Dinner Party is the pilot episode for The Incident, an anthology series offering viewers an immersive experience of true life paranormal events produced by Skybound Entertainment, RYOT, and Telexist, created and written by Charlotte Stoudt (Homeland) and Laura Wexler (Fire in a Canebrake: The Last Mass Lynching in America), and directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Bashir’s Dream, La Granja).
Set in 1961, Dinner Party tells the story of Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial couple who sought hypnosis to recover memories of inexplicable experience. When the Hills listen to their recorded hypnosis at a dinner party, what they hear changes their lives forever. The immersive episode stars Malcolm Barrett (Preacher, Timeless) as Barney Hill and Sarah Sokolovic (Big Little Lies, Homeland) as Betty Hill.
“It is a tremendous honor to premiere Dinner Party at the Sundance Film Festival,” said Charlotte Stoudt and Laura Wexler in a joint statement. “We’re grateful to Skybound, RYOT, and Telexist for helping us create the story of Betty and Barney’s abduction in virtual reality, allowing viewers to experience their thrilling, terrifying encounter in an unforgettably immersive way.”
Dinner Party was developed at the Sundance Institute’s New Frontier Lab and supported by a residency at Technicolor Experience Center, the Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund in Film and Media at Johns Hopkins University, and a grant for immersive art projects from Engadget as part of their first annual Alternate Realities Experience. Additional production partners for the pilot episode include Circle of Confusion and Thunder Studios.

From Architect to Artist: Emma Ríos’ Rise in Comics
If you can make it through this interview with Image Comics’ Emma Ríos without either falling in love with the craft of, like, creating comics and art or falling in love with her, then you’re stronger than us!
Emma Ríos is a comic artist and writer hailing from Spain, and that’s JUST the tip of the iceberg.
You may know Ríos’ work as the artist and co-creator of Pretty Deadly, with Kelly Sue DeConnick, or as the writer and co-creator of Mirror, with Hwei Lim, but she wasn’t always an independent comic wonder. Ríos has done work for Boom Comics AND Marvel, before returning to independent work in 2013. Through Image, she has also published her own book, I.D., on which she serves as the sole writer and artist.
Tune in to this episode of the Skybound Insider to hear about Ríos’ past as an architect, her stint as a professional fencer, and her childhood loving comic books! Ríos’ route to comics wasn’t as clear cut as some, but she’s proven herself in every aspect of the medium and is truly a dynamic creator and voice.
Sit back and GET HYPED for our discussion with Emma Ríos – we can’t wait for you to hear what she has to say!

Skybound to Adapt Hit Game SUMMONERS WAR!
Hey all! Last night, our new partners at Com2us, creators of SUMMONERS WAR, announced that we’ll be working together to expand the world of Summoners War into comics, animation, and more! We’ve been talking with Com2us for a while, and every department at Skybound is beyond excited at the potential of Summoners War and how we can explore that universe. We’re staying tight lipped for now, but we’ll have more information on our upcoming projects soon! Full press release is below, give it a read for even more information.
Com2us Partners With Creators of The Walking Dead to Bring Summoners War to Comic Books and Animation
LOS ANGELES – Nov. 25, 2017 – Com2us announced today it has partnered with us to expand its flagship RPG, Summoners War, into an entertainment franchise across various mediums, including comics, animated series and beyond. This announcement was made via video moments before the final series of matches at the Summoners War World Arena Championship at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
The Walking Dead creator, Robert Kirkman, along with Skybound co-founder and CEO, David Alpert, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars/The Angry Birds Movie producer/CEO of Skybound North, Catherine Winder, will oversee the development of the Summoners War universe outside of the gaming space as executive producers.
This collaboration comes on the heels of Com2us’ expanded push into additional entertainment media verticals. Working closely with Com2us, Skybound promises to deliver not only a deep and engaging origin story, but content in various formats that will be the perfect companion piece to the game.
“The Summoners War team has created an incredibly compelling and fantastical world ripe with engaging characters and storytelling opportunities. We are excited and proud to partner with them to expand this rich universe, loved by so many from around the world for audiences across all cultures and ages, into multiple forms of content filled with the adventure and wonder of the game,” said Robert Kirkman, Catherine Winder and David Alpert in a joint statement.
Summoners War is a mobile turn-based strategy game that allows players to assume the role of a summoner, utilizing over 1000 monsters to fight in turn-based battles. Since its launch in 2014, the game has amassed more than 80 million downloads worldwide and generated over one billion dollars in revenue to date, defying industry means by continuing to grow in popularity worldwide. To sustain the game’s growth, Com2us will also launch more events to further engage its community of loyal fans and online influencers as well as the game’s IP.
“To say we are honored to work with such a prolific and acclaimed creator as Robert, Catherine and the entire Skybound team, is an understatement,” said Casey Lee, CEO of Com2us USA, Inc. “Robert has proven that he is a master of blending human drama and fantasy, while Catherine has been a veteran adaptor of major franchises into other mediums. There is no doubt in our minds that we are working with the best creators possible for building the Summoners War universe. We know how passionate and committed our fans are and our partnership with Skybound will not only allow for a deeper and more engaging Summoners War experience but also strengthen the IP’s brand equity.”
Com2us’ decision to partner with a multi-platform company that specializes in large, multi-tiered worlds in all forms of content was another key factor.
