Greg Rucka: Comic Writer, Novelist… Stuntman?!?

It’s not everyday you get to sit down with a living legend… and to be fair, you didn’t – but we did! And you get to watch! This week we’re bringing you a very special episode of the Skybound Insider featuring the man himself, Mr. Greg Rucka.

Rucka is both a comic book writer and novelist, known for his work on Action Comics, Batwoman, Detective Comics, and Lazarus. He is both a DC and Marvel comics alum, as well as doing work for Omni, and our very own Image. His latest release, The Old Guard, has been received with rave reviews and wrapped up it’s first arc in late 2017. His works have won a GLAAD media award, a Harvey award and three Eisner Awards.

Clearly, Greg Rucka is a force to be reckoned with.

In this interview Rucka not only walks us through how his career began (writing his Atticus Kodiak series) and advice for new writers, but his emotional state through the phases of his career. We’d like this to serve as a trigger warning for discussions of depression and suicidal thoughts. If you experience suicidal thoughts, we encourage you to phone the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255, reach out to loved ones, and seek professional guidance. You are not alone.

Thank you so much to Greg for sitting down with us and we hope you all enjoy the sage wisdom from a man with much to teach… seriously, so so much. Enjoy.

Do you agree? Are there some choice INVINCIBLE moments we missed? Tell us in the comments or go yell at us on the official Invincible twitter account: InvincibleHQ! Don’t forget: The End of All Things is dropping February 14th!

So many choice fights!

Battle Beast Vs Thragg.

The scene transitions in a few of the issues, where it's parts of the Thragg vs Battle Beast fight

— BB Knight (@PetShopCawer) January 30, 2018

Yeah, you can't beat how badass the Thragg/Battle Beast fight was

— Clayton G (@LCuCuy) January 31, 2018

invincibleconquest18

The Conquest fight and atom eve! Holy crap you guys threw me for a loop.

— A Week In Geekdom (@AWEEKINGEEKDOM) January 30, 2018

invvsscience

Invincible vs Science Dog was pretty great.

— Chris Piers (@chrispiers) January 31, 2018

The life and times of Armstrong Levy:

My favorite moment is the entire issue of #33. Angstrom Levy was such a great villain! The “fight” in this issue is so original and memorable! #Invincible15 pic.twitter.com/rkSH4iyhN5

— Devin Berry (@devinberry1997) January 31, 2018

How can we pick?! How about the events of Issues 108 & 109. A quest to follow one of the greatest villains, Angstrom Levy, into a new dimension. It’s filled with fan service. Conquest, Rudy, and a Baby Monster Girl as well as the brutal betrayal by Robot, leaving Mark stranded!

— The Invincible Podcast (@InvincibleCast) January 31, 2018

Robot’s Takeover:

invincible_121_cover_by_ryanottley-d8tlkc0

There are a lot of moments, but Robot's conquest of Earth was shocking. I don't think I've ever seen a book take a turn quite that fast and with a bodycount that high. pic.twitter.com/kHSqp4aIlY

— Andrew Stewart (@Avenging_Andrew) January 31, 2018

Re-re-re REBOOT:

The end of the Reboot arc was hands down the most gut-wrenching moment. It had me crying during lunch at school.

— Griff Massey (@griff_massey) January 30, 2018

The moment that hit me the hardest in Invincible was when Mark was sent back in time, & it wasn't clear if he'd ever get back. Having to relive everything & try to change everything, all while destroying the future that had been. @RobertKirkman @RyanOttley @Skybound pic.twitter.com/qwQd7G8Gqm

— Andi Tiscareno (@AndiT800) February 1, 2018

Quality time with Mark & Eve

mark-eve

The scenes from issue 54 with Mark and Eve on their super date and they think about their memories from their history together and tell each other I love you.

— Cory Puga (@corypuga) January 31, 2018

Issue 54 is a top 5 favorite of mine not only because of the future teases, but because it was my favorite representation of Mark and Eve’s relationship. So good!!

— The Invincible Podcast (@InvincibleCast) January 31, 2018

The source of all of Mark’s Daddy issues:

marknolan

End of the first arc, omni man leaves his son in a pool of blood. Got me hooked and changed my life forever. Best comic book of all time.

— Edziu (@KnowIEDG3) January 30, 2018

"You, Dad. I'd still have you."

— Robbie Z (@robbiez) January 31, 2018

Overwhelmingly, there was lots of love for Conquest

Comic book moment- Conquest fight, particularly Conquest’s monologue with the two page close up head shot. Non comic moment, the movie announcement and watching Game Over Gregory react live on Twitch was awesome! pic.twitter.com/A1ZuE4KZZ6

— Mike (@mikerb2223) February 1, 2018

I think it’s gotta be anything with Conquest for me I love that character design plus he’s such a badass villain.

— Channing weierman (@ChanningWiremen) January 31, 2018

This might be a little generic but the conquest stuff and the alternate dimension invincible stuff is SO GOOD #WEWANTCONQUESTBACK

— LAZY BUT STUDIOS (@Lazy_But_Studio) January 31, 2018

Gotta be the Conquest arc – specifically the killing of Eve. It was SO shocking and devastating and felt very final. That whole arc was the highlight of the series for me.

— Phillip Sevy @ECCC EE6 (@phillipsevy) January 30, 2018

I felt like Mark was such a badass in these panels. "That was just a warm up" gave me chills pic.twitter.com/CWf6njwecU

— Kozmik Kreator (@kozmos92) January 31, 2018

The arrival of Conquest signified a greater threat that Mark wasn’t quite ready for but pulled through anyway, incredible art and writing. The family being attacked in issues 131 and 132 was also breathtaking. pic.twitter.com/2EqvmTLoBh

— Ben nerdschatting (@ben_nerdchat) February 1, 2018

Are you doing an INVINCIBLE re-read before the end? Let us know if you stumble upon any other awesome moments we didn’t include!

Announcing the BIRTHRIGHT movie!

We’ve got some huge new for you folks today! Like, news of EPIC proportion. Skybound and Universal Pictures are officially adapting Joshua Williamson & Andrei Bressan’s hit comic series BIRTHRIGHT as a feature length film! You heard us right! BIRTHRIGHT MOVIE!!

BIRTHRIGHT the comic dropped in 2014 and has been a huge part of the Skybound comics world ever since. We’ve followed Mikey and the Rhodes family on epic quests and through insane backdrops that we can’t wait to see on screen. If you haven’t caught up on the series, now’s a great time.

We don’t have too many more details just yet about the BIRTHRIGHT movie, but check out the full press release below and let us know what you’re most excited about. Who would you cast as Mikey? What parts of Terrenos are you stoked to see on screen? It’s gonna be crazy folks and we can’t wait to take the ride with you.

SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT AND UNIVERSAL PICTURES ANNOUNCE THE FEATURE ADAPTATION OF SKYBOUND/IMAGE COMIC SERIES BIRTHRIGHT

CINCO PAUL and KEN DAURIO (DESPICABLE ME) ATTACHED TO ADAPT

birthright01

Skybound Entertainment and Universal Pictures announced today that they will be developing the Joshua Williamson and Andrei Bressan created comic series Birthright as a feature.

Birthright follows the story of the Rhodes family who suffer the unthinkable when their young son Mikey disappears. The story follows the family as they discover just what happened to Mikey.

Birthright has been a part of Skybound’s top-tier comic roster for almost three years now and we’re thrilled to expand upon its large, sweeping story. We’re so inspired by Cinco and Ken’s passion for Josh and Andrei’s brilliant comic, and couldn’t imagine better voices to bring heart and humor to this unique family adventure,” said Bryan Furst, Skybound co-president of film & TV.

“Birthright is a giant fantasy epic but at its core it’s a story about family, and I’m really excited that a creative team who values those same storytelling elements will be adapting Birthright,” said co-creator Joshua Williamson.

Williamson continued, “Andrei and I have put so much of ourselves into developing the Birthright comic and we know that Cinco, Ken and the entire Skybound team will do the same as they adapt it for the big screen. I’ve been a big fan of Universal ever since I was a kid, and I’ll lose it when I see the Universal logo in front of the Birthright movie!”

Birthright joins as the third feature attached to Skybound Entertainment’s first look deal with Universal. Previously announced projects include Robert Kirkman’s long-running comic series Invincible and the Skybound/Image comic series Kill the Minotaur. Skybound’s Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst are attached as producers as well as Jeb Brody (The Mummy, Fifty Shades of Grey).

Skybound Partners with Druid City Games for Guardian’s Call!

Skybound Entertainment is partnering with Druid City Games for a brand new card game! Guardian’s Call (which has already met its funding goal) is a bluffing and deduction card game created by James Hudson, and the second project from a partnership between Skybound and Druid City Games, following fable-based tabletop game The Grimm Forest. Both Guardian’s Call and The Grimm Forest are available for pre-order now!

In Guardian’s Call, each player is a member of the Guardian’s Council, but only the player who brings the most resources to the council will be chosen as the Guardian of the Realm. To gain resources, players offer one another aid by offering various weapons and shields, artifacts, and magical spells in the form of cards. Deceiving players is encouraged, and is an advantage as long as you can bluff without getting caught!

Check out additional information on the game and find the pre-order link HERE.

If you haven’t already, check out our other game partnership with Druid City Games, The Grimm Forest. The Grimm Forest is shipping soon so make sure to preorder your copy HERE.
