Tuesday Morning

My brain is bubbling with ideas this morning, largely focused on writing-as-a-business type things. A recent conversation with two dear friends put some things in perspective, and opportunities are beginning to present themselves to start some balls rolling. And that's the weird thing about writing-for-a-living; there are really a million ways to make your living writing, but it takes a while to figure out what way is right for YOU.

The writing and business advice books will tell you to ass...

Monday Morning

There's something balefully magnificent about the round of coughing given to Chez CB by this latest cold. We sound hollow and barking; foghorns punching through the night. Apparently it is going around, the joy of seasonal change. Come on spring! We want healthy warm sunshine!

The weekend evaporated somehow, and there's nothing for it but to grab Monday by the horns and start wrangling. I'm going to be the Annie Oakley of prose for hire, shooting things off my to-do list from across the dusty...

Friday Morning

I am of a significantly mixed mind when it comes to matters of magic. Perhaps I'm most comfortable thinking about magical things when magic is defined as that pre-science state where things happen without explanation. It's knowing the mechanics that makes a thing mundane: when you can't see how stuff works, it becomes magical.

You understand that this premise strips entirely away the pretense that magic is by default wonderous, amazing to all who see it. That's baloney. People are happily i...

Thursday Morning

It is exactly the type of gray, wet cold day that makes writing such an awesome occupation. If I had to go wrangle buffalo or schlep stone or some such thing, I would not be looking forward to my day. But I've Cherry Kool-Aid in abundance, some *really neat* work to do today, and a quiet house. Life is good.

When the snow falls just a little bit on muddy ground, it always reminds me of Pfeffernusse. The weather calls for a handful, and black coffee. I remember the last time I had any, years...

Wednesday Morning

The secret to having a blissfully happy life is to ignore 99% of what is going on. That's it. I've cracked the secret of all those hermits and gurus who sit on mountaintops. Serenity is 1000% easier when all you can see is blue skies and distant clouds.

Ignoring 99% of what going on, however, does tend to lead to the rest of your life going to absolute shit. I always wondered why gurus wore crappy clothes; the whole hermit loincloth thing defies reason. What the hell else are you going to...

Monday Morning

It was an exhausting weekend; so much pre-teen drama that I exhaust myself further by thinking about how in the world to convey the sheer angstitude of it all, so I won't.

If we're to believe the Baptists, and while I'm not sure about them en masse, I have no particular reason to believe the one who told me this next bit believed anything other than what they said, there's a form of Divine Grace known as Natural Revelation: when the world is arranged in such a perfect way, and you are dumb st...
