How To Find Freelance Work
Hi Dan! This post is written for you :-)
One of the things people ask me a lot is how you find clients when you're a freelancer. Like everything else in life, my approach is simultaneously overthought and ass backwards, but it's worked for ten years or so. YMMV and all that. But this is how I do it:
One: Know what kind of work you're looking for. And by know, I mean know intimately as possible. Not all writing work is created equal. Have in your mind the type of assignments you (a) really like...

BLERGH
Well, I've written two articles. Some days the words flow like water, and other days they are like pulling teeth. I was lamenting the pulling teeth nature of the day to Tim when Nadia got home and revealed that her tooth actually fell out today. So if there had to be difficult teeth pulling involved, I'm glad it was me and not her.
On the other hand, I found a nifty bone of some sort when I was out looking for meteors. Now it's going to rain and I'm going to investigate the culinary possibi...

Tuesday Morning
My brain is all over the place this morning, and one of the things I'm thinking about is identifying the differentiators that make one business more successful than another. I'm particularly thinking about this as it applies to the creative professional, with an eye to considering how engaged one needs to be with the (for lack of a better term) 'mainstream culture' in order to make it. More important than that, I think, is an understanding of your intimately local market and their perception ...

Quick Fly By Posting
To say, you should read Mike Rowe's testimony before Congress. Pretty neat stuff and thought provoking.

Monday Morning
I am officially old. I know this because seeing a publisher use the number 3 instead of the letter E when writing the word 'sexy' has done no more than provoke a "Meh, I know who not to send my stuff to...". When being a cynical curmudgeon requires just too much effort and offers too little reward, you know you're old. Or it's Monday.
Definitely one of those two.
In good news, the dog isn't actually paralyzed. I thought he was, as he lay there this morning, three legs straight up and the fourt...

Another Cooking Post
Yup, imaginary cooking is a good way to pass the time when you can not sleep. This morning, I bring you my meditations on how to make the perfect carrot soup.
Carrot soup is one of those things I really like conceptually: when they sit down for supper in Redwall Abbey, they eat carrot soup. But the reality is that many carrot soups I have had in reality have really rather sucked, largely because they were made by distressingly financially secure old hippie ladies who'd ditched their husband...

Odd
How the sensation of reading a fairly good piece of copywriting you've written is not at all unlike reading a fairly good piece of pornography you've written. I am deeply tempted to go write political theory now and see if the same result occurs.

A Cooking Post
Last night I could not sleep very well. I tried, but spent a good many hours lying there, waiting for the night to claim me. It was in vain. So instead, I spent the time cooking in my head. Imaginary meals are much easier on the budget than the real thing *grin*
Last night's recipe was les lapins despondent; rabbits who have abandoned hope.
Use a stone mortar. Crush together Kosher salt, black peppercorns, three or four juniper berries, some red pepper flakes that have pleased you and are free...
