Melissa grew up a nomad, following her family all over the United States, and ended up living in the shadow of the Wasatch Mountains with her husband, four kids, and three very needy cats. Her love of reading was always a constant during those uncertain years, and her love of writing grew out of that. She wrote reviews and critical essays for many years before turning to fiction, and was surprised at how much she liked it. She loves the fantasy genre and how it stretches the imagination.

My 2019 Reading Favorites

I read 79 books in 2019, which is lower than last year. Considering that I read a lot of my own books (either in editing or in preparing to write something new in a series) that number is actually more like 67. In looking at my spreadsheet where I track my reading, I see long weeks where I didn’t read anything at all. That’s the tradeoff for me as a writer–either I’m reading or I’m writing, but I’

"A classic.

In some ways completely relevant, in others a bit dated. I *am* reading this as an adult, so a kid's mileage may vary.

Still absolutely worth the read. "

The Hunger Games was never this cringey was it? I remember The Hunger Games being kind of badass. Have I become a snob, or is this actually as lame as I think it is?"

Arcane Pathfinder by Mashton XX
Still staring at the dead woman, Sam tried to feel…something, anything. But try as she might, she couldn’t feel remorse for Banta. “What have I become?” She asked herself, “Am I so callous now the violent death of a sapient life form right in front of my eyes doesn’t even register with my emotions?” She knew Banta intended to kill her and probably her friends too, maybe not initially, but judging from the look of pure hatred on her face moments ago, it was apparent she decided to murder them at some point. Sam truly hoped it was that knowledge that was keeping her from feeling empathy for the ...more

My daughter came home from her college library with this. She'd never read anything by Stephen King before, and she said she idly started it while waiting for us to pick her up, and it hooked her. So when she finished, I thought I'd give it a try.

This was... okay, I guess? It's different, because it's set in ancient Egypt in an actual historical period, not alt-history or historical fantasy. But the mystery is only so-so, and I didn't lik

“it’s because you’re a different person, every time you re-read a book, and you learn things your earlier self wouldn’t have noticed or wouldn’t have cared about. Or sometimes it’s just because the story is an old favorite, and it’s a comforting reminder of good things.”
Melissa McShane, Servant of the Crown

“It gives me pleasure to walk through a room full of books and know that one of them might be the next story I fall in love with.”
Melissa McShane, Servant of the Crown

“My people believe bathing weakens you,” Gerrard said. “But my people are well known to be uncivilized.” “Your people don’t believe in drinking coffee. That’s a fair definition of uncivilized.”
Melissa McShane, Emissary

Topics Mentioning This Author

“It struck me as pretty ridiculous to be called Mr. Darcy and to stand on your own looking snooty at a party. It's like being called Heathcliff and insisting on spending the entire evening in the garden, shouting "Cathy" and banging your head against a tree.”
Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones’s Diary

“Strength is the capacity to break a Hershey bar into four pieces with your bare hands - and then eat just one of the pieces.”
Judith Viorst, Love and Guilt and the Meaning of Life, Etc.

“It is useless for the sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism, while the wolf remains of a different opinion.”
William Ralph Inge

“The truth is that the world is full of dragons, and none of us are as powerful or cool as we’d like to be. And that sucks. But when you’re confronted with that fact, you can either crawl into a hole and quit, or you can get out there, take off your shoes, and Bilbo it up.”
Patrick Rothfuss

“I meant," said Ipslore bitterly, "what is there in this world that truly makes living worthwhile?"
Death thought about it.
CATS, he said eventually. CATS ARE NICE.”
Terry Pratchett, Sourcery
