Thank Gods for the Interwebs

I remember being back in college. Research papers were always a pain. Research meant long hours sitting the library sifting through the card catalog and pulling books from shelves. It meant hours reading and taking notes. Nowadays the Internet has made research simple. One only has to go as far as her computer to find the information she seeks. With a little bit of typing and a simple click people literally have a plethora of information at their fingertips.

The Internet not only saves time bu...

Found Files

Every so often I open my word processor, or a draft in my email program, and jot down the never ending (sometimes random) torrent of words that cascade out of my brain. It clears out the clutter. Every so often I run across these files months, sometimes even years, later only to discover what I’ve written is either fitting or profound in some way.

Here is one of those “found files” from August of last year with what appears to be a poem. I found it rather fitting for this gray, rainy day.

Excuses for Not Blogging

It’s already the 11th of September. This time of year always brings back memories of those we lost this day twelve years ago. It’s also that time of year I begin to look back on the first part of the year, and forward to the remainder of the year.

This looking back/looking forward bit made me realize I haven’t posted to the blog in about fifteen days. It also made me realize just how much I have to get done before the end of the year.

So now for an autumn 2013 project update:

Rising Darkness: Lo...

Cultivating Motivation

So when I began writing this post I actually felt rather unmotivated to write about motivation. Motivation can be a fickle thing. Because, you see, when it occurred to me that I wasn’t motivated to write about motivation, I found it so amusing that it motivated me to write about motivation. That’s how motivation sometimes works.

At first I began writing about what motivates me to write and then I decided that was a rather boring topic. I’d rather talk about characters and what motivates a good...

Excerpt: Rising Darkness

rising darknessPlease note the following PG13 excerpt is unedited. Rising Darkness is Coming Soon! (Autumn 2013)

I grabbed a flashlight, clicked it on, and started toward the door, looking for any sign of electricity. A switch; an overhead light. There was nothing. “Let’s go folks. No time like the present.”

I saw the four of them, from the corner of my eye, exchange glances. Gabe still stood behind the camera.

He grabbed his handheld video recorder and joined us. “I’ll record it!”

I laughed. “From the rear?”

“L...

A Rising Damp – Now Available

arisingdampA Rising Damp (A Paranormal Horror Short) by Audrey Brice.

Evelyn Winters enjoyed spending the summers at her grandmother’s cabin. There was always something interesting to do whether tending the garden, or exploring the surrounding swampy forest of the Smoky Mountains. She never cared to learn the witching ways of her grandmother – until the devil showed up. When Eldon Jenkins is found dead, torn limb from limb by a wild beast, and the devil comes creeping around the cabin, grandma keeps it a...

Make No Mistake

It seems that small, start-up traditional publishers have a lot of misconceptions about independent authors and the publishing industry in general. It’s as if they’re stuck in the pre-2008 publishing era and don’t realize just how much the publishing industry has changed in the past few years, or how the playing field has leveled. In the past two months I’ve had no less than TWO small start-up publishers (occult publishers specifically) insult me with some of the following while trying to get...

Find the Right Community

online communityOnline writing communities can be vast oceans difficult to navigate if you’re new to the scene. The wrong community can cause aspiring writers to give up, while the right community can help nurture a writer’s creativity, or boost them toward publication.

The first question you want to ask yourself is, “What are my long term goals?”

If you love writing fan fiction, or you’re writing for fun, you likely aren’t going to thrive, or find a friendly audience, in a writing community of authors seeking...
