How NOT to Promote Your Novel

A Brief Guide for Newly Published Authors

Do not SPAM your twitter feed or social network with links to your book once an hour on the hour for weeks or even months. That’s SPAM, not marketing. That doesn’t mean an occasional book pimp is a bad thing. Do engage in author events, talk to your potential readers about normal day-to-day stuff, and act like a human with interests, a life, etc. Do not post ridiculous statements like, “The greatest American novel EVER!” or “Your world will change if...

The Art of Focus

For years now I’ve had people in awe of my writing output. Some people have asked, “How do you keep it all straight?”

I’m never sure how to answer this. The reality is thatworking on 2-4 projects at atime with more on the back burner is never easy. If I told you I navigated my chaotic writer brain flawlessly all the time, I’d be lying. Some days it comes easyand I can focus on one or two things. Other days it’s a real struggle and I find myself jumping aimlessly from one project to the next.

New DB Publishing Guidelines

Updated DB Publishing Guidelines

(They were needed sooner rather than later.)

Due to the high volume of unprofessional first time authors, we now only accept agented manuscripts or manuscripts from established authors. Manuscripts should be edited for grammar and spelling errors BEFORE submission. A poorly written MS is grounds for rejection no matter how brilliant the subject matter.

Before submitting a MS to DB Publishing, please make sure you agree to the following:

1. You are willing to s...

The Danbury Ghost

The House 3Now Available! When Carrie Martinson, known for flipping houses in six months or less, buys her next project in Danbury Crossing, Connecticut, she had no idea the house was haunted. Nor did she realize that this time, her six month deadline didn’t leave her enough time to run from her past. Reclaiming Joy #amwriting #success

I’ve always loved writing. Writing is my meditation. My escape. It’s my happy place – my joy. Then it became my job and I loved it even more.

But there was a brief time period after Switched came out (autumn of 2012), where, with success, came pressure. For me, that pressure started sucking the joy out of writing and I had to go forward and find a way to reclaim the joy that success had taken from me.

Don’t misunderstand. I’m not suggesting in any way that success in a job you love will render...

The Alternative to Capitalism is Still Work #reality

Work or die.

I was reading an article about Millennials today that blames capitalism for how a lot of modern kids don’t want to work. The article went on to say that a lot of these young people aren’t lazy – they simply dream of a world that isn’t so fixated on capitalism because they don’t think they should have to work 10 hours a day at a job they hate in order to make someone else rich. They should be able to follow their bliss and change the world! Like feeding the homeless. (Apparently t...

The Problem With Magick

Some of the biggest problems magicians have with making magick manifest to their will, include the following:

1. Unrealistic Expectations – they expect it should work like Harry Potter. Say an incantation and *poof* instant results. They don’t stop to look at each situation as something unique thatmay require more work. Sometimes – yes, the quick incantation will work, but only if all the opposition has been dealt with first.

2. The unwillingness to accept the things they cannot change. Very...

Magickal vs. Spiritual Practice: The Art of Balancing Theosophy, Thaumaturgy, and Theurgy

Since I’ve already talked about why I don’t blog a lot about magick, but probably should, it seemed natural for me to choose this topic for my first post of 2016. This post (or thinly veiled rant if you prefer, possibly narcissistic), of course, was inspired by a conversation I had with a new practitioner of Daemonolatry who was only interested in the spiritual.

magic-bookI want to say up front that it’s okay for one to have JUST a spiritual practice. However, I have to admit that my identity as a magi...

Review: #Microsoft #Surface Book

It’s really no secret that I like reviewing the technology that I use just to give folks an unbiased look at what a real working creative professional thinks of everything from phones to tablets to computers. So before I review this laptop, I have to give you a little backstory.

A few years back I bought a Surface RT. LOVED it. I still love it. It fits in my big purse and it’s a fantastic alternative to lugging around a laptop bag. I use it to workwhen on vacation and Icarry itto conferences...
