What Makes a Good Friend?

I was actually on social media earlier when a post came across my feed where one person was accusing another person of not being a good friend because that person wasn’t constantly over at the other person’s house, or constantly calling the other person.

Needy much?

I have a theory about this and perhaps I’m a giant asshole for saying this, but just because you’re needy and your friend isn’t, doesn’t mean they’re not a good friend. As a matter-of-fact, from my perspective, the needier the ot...

When Everyone Knows You

I woke up to yet another email this morning where a stranger was warning me about another stranger claiming to know me. Apparently, this other person was telling everyone who would listen that they knew my publicist, that I had stolen my experiences from other people, that she knew me really well and knew I was a fraud. I politely thanked the stranger for the heads up and went on my merry way. I’m starting to feel like if I had a five dollar bill for every person who claimed to know me “reall...

February’s #DoMagick Challenge – Focus Meditation!

As I mention in this months newsletter – the start of a new year is the perfect time to recommit to having a daily practice, whatever that practice may be. Meditation is one of the more beneficial daily practices because it helps in every aspect of a person’s life – from increasing focus, to decreasing stress. For magicians, meditation is a foundational skill we all need. So if you haven’t started a daily meditation practice, why not?

So here’s the deal — in February, I’m going to mix up my m...

2019 Affirmations – Goals

I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions. As a matter of fact, the last resolution I ever made (many years ago) was to never make another New Year’s Resolution, and it was the only resolution I’ve ever been able to keep.

Resolutions tend to set some folks up for failure, and admittedly, I’m one of those people.

Instead, I set goals and I make affirmations.

2019 is going to be my year of JOY.

Somewhere along the way, in the past few years, I became perpetually busy and forgot to enjoy myself along th...

Thirty Day Talisman Challenge – Overall Thoughts #DoMagick

So the thirty day talisman challenge actually taught me a lot. First, it taught me to trust my inner creator. It taught me to express my inner child. It reminded me to find joy in stolen moments. It reminded me to find pleasure in the act of creating. It forced me to take some time for myself each day. It was also a reminder of how much I enjoy playing with paint, watercolor, colored pencils, markers, pens, etc… I have decided to continue on by making sure I give myself at least one creative...

Day Thirty: Talismans – Protection #DoMagick

The Goddess Bastet and I go way back. Ever since we moved into this house over 18 years ago, I have called on Bastet to protect our home, and our cats, and she has been diligent. I find comfort, great comfort, with cats. It’s probably because I’m a cat person. I also think of things like Fun, and Relaxation when I think of cats.

Today’s meditation and subsequent talisman thus turned into a bizarre (but fun) sketch of Bastet. This talisman brings me great comfort and joy just looking at it. It...

Day Twenty-Nine: Talismans – Freedom #DoMagick

I titled today’s talisman Freedom because I was talking to a friend earlier today about her birds. I’m not a huge bird fan, and have an aversion to flying things in small spaces. So, as we were chatting I found myself doodling this and I asked myself – what does this mean to me?

The answer came quickly and clearly. I view birds with fear, respect, and when I look at them – I see freedom. In this case – freedom from creative fears.

This talisman is a nudge toward releasing creative fear and e...

Day Twenty-Eight: Talismans – More Keywords #DoMagick

I have been contemplating my keywords a lot now that the new year approaches. So today since I was feeling a bit worn down from a cold courtesy my co-workers, I decided to draw a couple of my keywords on what are supposed to be, sword blades. HAHA

Regardless, it turned out looking pretty cool and I’m pleased with this talisman. I am going to leave this one on my altar, while day before yesterday’s talisman is going to hang on my desk as a constant reminder.

Thoughts give power to manifestati...

Day Twenty-Seven: Talismans – Energy #DoMagick

Taking action is a huge part of creative recovery. You can’t just sit around ruminating about being creative, you actually have to find ways to allow your creativity to flourish.

For some reason the stereotypical lightening shape screams energy/action to me. While I drew these lines I focused on my intentions and the actions I was going to take toward those intentions moving forward. The act of drawing it out, even in simple lines, was enough to send this one out into the universe. I felt rea...
