Don't let rejection break your heart. Find your writing family.

Above all, write what you truly want to, and only if you find joy and satisfaction in the process.

I'm currently reading The Obelisk Gate (The Broken Earth Book 2) by N.K. Jemisin, which is fantastic. The last book in the trilogy will be out in August, so I'm looking forward to that.

For lighter fare, I'm going middle-grade this summer, with the 5-book series "The Chronicles of Prydain", and a retelling of the Persian epic poem "The Shahnameh". Something to share with the kids!

I'm also reading this fat, heavy, illustrated book called "Medieval Warfare" as well as "The Art of War" by the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu. Why, you may ask? Research purposes, I answer. To write effectively about battles, one must read about how they were fought. (less)

More books by Rati Mehrotra…

No year for me is complete without an enjoyable look back at my favorite reads. I just checked goodreads, and apparently I have read 71 books out of my modest goal of 40 for the year. Not bad for a busy year in which I launched my debut novel and edited a much-longer sequel, heh. I liked most of the books I read, so picking the top ten is a deeply difficult task. I decided: no more than one per...

“The only binds are those that you lay on yourself, or those that you allow to be laid on you.”
Rati Mehrotra, Markswoman

“To b evil is to suffer and there is joy in releasing others from suffering.”
Rati Mehrotra, Markswoman

“Kali the demon-slayer danced across the walls, holding aloft the sword of knowledge to cut the bonds of ignorance and destroy her enemy, falsehood. Kali, whose name literally meant “the dark one,” had been worshipped by millions before the Great War, Shirin Mam had told them. She was the oldest in the pantheon of deities that once flourished in Asiana. She was there at the beginning of things, and would be there when everything ended.”
