Clear Plastic Masks at Troubadour - February 7 and 8

CLEAR PLASTIC MASKS REVIEWED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES
DEBUT EP OUT NOW ON SERPENTS & SNAKES RECORDS/DINE ALONE RECORDS
TOUR DATES CONFIRMED WITH WHITE DENIM
MUSIC VIDEO PREMIERES
“…the band emanates a powerful brand of blues rock with psych inflections.”—The Deli
“Artist to Watch”—Rollo & Grady
’ Jon Pareles reviews the self-titled debut EP from emerging Nashville band Clear Plastic Masks(CPM) praising, “The churning, galvanic, righteously messy surge and crash of 1960s rock is their heritage, full of loose ends and live wires; they’ve got firm roots without settling down in the slightest.” Out now on Serpents & Snakes Records/Dine Alone Records (), the four-song EP features material that will be included in the band’s forthcoming full-length debut, which will be released early 2014. After wrapping up a series of shows with Alabama Shakes, the band will embark on a tour with White Denim in 2014. See below for complete details.
Already receiving critical acclaim, recently premiered the music video for the EP’s first single, “Baby Come On,” praising, “Documenting the events of one wild late night, the video blends these connected images of traveling, dancing, and spending time at the beach with the band’s modern and distinctly unique spin on the blues while covering everything in a gritty, emotional realism. But far from simply appropriating music that’s existed for a hundred years, they shift their influences and inspirations inward, twisting them until they’re only shadows of their former selves— all turned toward Clear Plastic Masks’ inimitable rock aesthetic.” The video can be viewed/embedded . Additionally, calls the song, “So Real,” a “scorching garage rock with nothing to hide: just pummeling percussion, desperate yowls that recall Jack White before he became Jack White, and a whole lot of scrappy guitar fuzz that should please Black Lips worshipers,” while the describes it as, “a scuzzy, reckless, blooze-bolstered rock ‘n' roll number.” Moreover, an All Saints-directed video of the band performing at this past year’s SXSW can be viewed .
Formed in 2011 in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, CPM relocated to Nashville in 2012 where they recorded their debut album at The Bomb Shelter. The 4-piece band is made up of Eddy DuQuesne (bass/keys), Charlie Garmendia (drums), Andrew Katz (guitar/keys/vocal) and Matt Menold (guitar/keys). In addition to CPM, the band-members recently launched a side-project with Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard, entitled Thunderbitch.

Documentary Available European Dateline 11/12/13
(December 2013) – To say things have changed in the way artists can reach their fans since Julian Lennon released his debut album Valotte in 1984, would be a massive understatement. No internet, iTunes, YouTube or social media, back then it was ‘get it on the radio’ and ‘get me on TV,’ which Julian did, resulting in two US No.1 Mainstream Rock hits along with Top 10 hits around the world. Fast forward to today with advancements in modern technology, Julian, like many artists, found a new way to deliver his art to fans in the form of a ground-breaking App delivering his latest work in an audio, film and visual interactive format. Please visit for more information.
The Julian Lennon App, released today, priced at $11.99 on , is available in all formats – Apple, , Windows, Kindle Fire, bringing the user’s experience to a new level directly connecting Julian with his fans. Displaying everything in rich high quality video, the App’s centerpiece is, Through The Picture Window, a frank, funny, lush and stylish feature-length documentary giving insight into what drives Julian as an artist and shines a spotlight on what it’s really like being Julian Lennon.
Filmed by award winning film-maker Dick Carruthers (Oasis, Led Zeppelin, The Killers, Aerosmith), Through The Picture Window is a feature length, in-depth look at the story behind his first studio album in more than fifteen years, Everything Changes, examining the history, influences and the creative process itself. For a sneak peek at the documentary, click the following link: The lush and stylized film is packed full of fascinating imagery and exclusive interview footage featuring the likes of Bono, Steven Tyler, and of course, Julian himself. The interactive viewing mode of the documentary with animated butterflies tempts the user to explore the songs, videos and other content.
His latest album Everything Changes is another collection of powerful and sophisticated adult pop, which includesSomeday; the superb collaboration with Steven Tyler, who comments“you can't hide from a good song… it just blew me away.”
Through The Picture Window showcases and examines Julian's work and relationships: what motivates and informs them; and in so doing frames a revealing portrait of Julian Lennon the Artist: the inside truth about his music, his philanthropy, and his new-found love of photography.
'He's an easy hang isn't he?... when he's not hitting you over the head with a whiskey bottle' - Bono'I had a lot of fun writing with him and I like tapping into genius like that because it does nothing but set me on fire' - Steven Tyler
'I've always felt I have written songs that have that hope for the future' - Julian Lennon

CAT ART SHOW LOS ANGELES Featuring 50 Artists

"Orange Cat" By Nicholas ChistiakovCAT ART SHOW LOS ANGELES
Los Angeles's First Cat Themed Art Show Featuring Works By Over 50 Artists Including Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Ray Caesar, Marc Dennis, Charlotte Dumas, Martin Eder, Tracey Emin, FAILE, Shepard Fairey, Christian Furr, Justin Mortimer, and more.
Opening Reception on Saturday, January 25th, 2014 6205 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles CA 90068
Los Angeles, CA (December 11th, 2013) -- On Saturday, January 25th, 2014, CAT ART SHOW LOS ANGELES will debut with over 50 globally recognized artists, including Tracey Emin, Shepard Fairey, Jonathan Yeo and Ray Caesar.
CAT ART SHOW LOS ANGELES is both a meditation and a celebration of the feline form. This exhibition goes beyond heralding felines as domesticated companion, and instead explores their role as muse and inspiration. Aloof one moment and adoring the next, their behavior alone is a constant source of artistic fodder destined for reinterpretation. Then there is their adroit physicality; be it lounging languorously across our still unread newspaper, or their instinctive predatory sensibilities.
Cats have been part of our lexicon (not to mention our home life) for thousands of years. The Egyptians frequently aligned them with the gods, like Bastet, the goddess of warfare. Later, great artists like Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and Pablo Picasso all created masterpieces centered around cats, sometimes showcasing them as companion, sometimes around something much deeper symbolically.
Unified in subject matter, this group exhibition features the interpretations of cats by artists Alan Aldridge, Anita Kunz, Antony Micallef, Bovey Lee, Brandon Boyd, Britt Ehringer, Buff Monster, Christian Guémy(C215),Charlotte Dumas, Christian Furr, Clayton Brothers, Dana Veraldi, Daniel Maidman, Diane Hoeptner, FAILE, Fedele Spadafora, Frank Stefanko, Gary Baseman, Guy Denning, Heather Mattoon, HUSH, Ingrid Allen, Jamie Fales, Jenny Parks, Jonathan Gent, Jonathan Yeo, Joshua Petker, JOW, Justin Bower, Justin Mortimer, Katherine Streeter, Kathleen Melian, Ken Solomon, Kevin Earl Taylor, Kimberly Brooks, Langley Fox, Larissa Bates, Lisa Borgnes Giramonti, Liz Markus, Luke Chueh, Ly Quan, Marc Dennis, Marion Peck, Martin Eder, Mattia Biagi, Melinda Lerner, Mercedes Helnwein, Misako Inaoka, Michael Wolf, Natalia Fabia, Nicholas Chistiakov, Nicholas Bowers, Noel Fielding, Paul Sahre, Rachel Schlueter, Ray Caesar, Rebecca Urias, Rob Reger, Robert Standish, Ryan Metke, Sage Vaughn, Scott Stulen, Steve Schapiro, Tim Biskup, Tracey Emin, Vera Iliatova.
Many of the artists, like Jonathan Gent, Justin Mortimer and HUSH, have never created a cat-themed work of art. Further, a number of the artists involved have readily admitted they are 'dog' people, and even allergic to cats, yet they cannot negate the fact that the feline form is a beautiful one that deserves to be heralded artistically. All in all, the art featured in CAT ART SHOW LOS ANGELES is a contemporary examination of the psychology, inspiration, and physical impact of cats in our lives.
CAT ART SHOW LOS ANGELES will be the largest exhibition of cat inspired artwork for sale ever exhibited. Partners include 101/exhibit, PicMonkey, Perrier, and The Walker Arts Center's Internet Cat Video Festival, who will provide the video portion of the exhibition, showcasing cat video vignettes from this year's fest as well as teasing what's in store for 2014. All artwork will be for sale, and a portion of the net proceeds will go to the Stray Cat Alliance of Los Angeles.
CAT ART SHOW LOS ANGELES is the inaugural show by journalist Susan Michals, who has written for many publications including The Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, Huffington Post andGalleristNY. Her producer and co-curator is Daniel Salin, who produced Banksy's 2006 Barely Legalshow in Los Angeles, as well as numerous shows with globally recognized artists like VHILS, JR, Antony Micallef, FAILE, and Mr. Brainwash.

HTRK unveil new album 'Psychic 9-5 Club'

HTRK return with 'Psychic 9-5 Club', Share first singleHTRK "Give it Up"
[ | ]
Release date: April 1, 2014Psychic 9-5 Club marks the beginning of a new chapter for HTRK. It's an album that looks back on a time of sadness and struggle, and within that struggle they find hope and humour and love. It's Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang's first album recorded entirely as a duo—former band member Sean Stewart died halfway through the recording of their last LP, 2011's Work (Work Work).
Though the record is instantly recognisable as HTRK—Standish's vocal delivery remains central to the band's sound, while the productions are typically lean and dubby—they've found ample room for exploration within this framework. Gone are the reverb-soaked guitar explorations of 2009's Marry Me Tonight and the fuzzy growls that ran through Work (Work Work). They've been replaced with something tender, velvety and polished. This is HTRK, but the flesh has been stripped from their sound, throwing the focus on naked arrangements and minimalist sound design. The album was recorded at Blazer Sound Studios in New Mexico with Excepter's Nathan Corbin, who had previously directed the video clip for Work (Work Work) cut "Bendin." Inviting a third party into their world was no easy decision, but in Corbin they found a kindred spirit. The LP was then refined and reworked in Australia at the turn of 2013, before the finishing touches were applied in New York during the summer.
Of all the themes that run through Psychic 9-5 Club, love is the most central. The word is laced throughout the album in lyrics and titles—love as a distraction, loving yourself, loving others. Standish's lyrics explore the complexities of sexuality and the body's reaction to personal loss, though there's room for wry humour—a constant through much of the best experimental Australian music of the past few decades.Standish explores her vocal range fully—her husky spoken-word drawl remains, but we also hear her laugh and sing. Equally, Yang's exploratory production techniques—particularly his well-documented love of dub—are given room to shine. They dip headlong into some of the things that make humans tick—love, loss and desire—with the kind of integrity that has marked the band out from day one. Psychic 9-5 Club is truly an album for the body and for the soul.

The Mast Debuts New Track "Raining Down"
THE MAST RELEASES NEW TRACK "RAINING DOWN"AVAILABLE FOR POSTING NOW
NEW ALBUM PLEASURE ISLAND OUT JANUARY 28, 2014

"The Mast is a modern day Renaissance couple...they play futuristic-electro pop inspired by early IDM and experimental beat music - James Blake on mescaline" - Village Voice
"With an ominous synthesized growl curling like dry ice underneath,'UpUpUp' casts a beguiling spell" - Pitchfork
The Mast is pleased to release their new track "Raining Down" as a preview of their upcoming album Pleasure Island , out January 28th, 2014 on Channel A Records. The second track on the album, "Raining Down" combines Haleh Gafori's sultry distorted vocals with Matt Kilmer's euphoric, Eastern-inspired production, with subtle nods to their varied influences such as Massive Attack,Bonobo, and Mount Kimbie. Like much of The Mast's catalog, the track seamlessly stitches a vast array of musical strains, from tribal music to old-school trance to hip-hop, into their own singular sound. "Raining Down" is now available for streaming and embed HERE.
Recently, the band debuted their video for "So Right," which quickly garnered praise from USA Today , The Huffington Post , Death + Taxes, Impose and more. The clip premiered via Interview Magazine , who called it "irresistibly adorable...a party worthy of Baby Ibiza, against the sonic backdrop of galactic, swirling synths and Gafori's sweet vocals." The video was produced entirely by the band, with singer Haleh directing and editing and beatsmith/percussionist Matt filming. The concept of the video came from watching Haleh's 22-month-old nephew pretend to DJ as the duo were visiting while working on Pleasure Island.
Eschewing the traditional instrumentation used on their debut Wild Poppies, Haleh and Matt created the blueprints for Pleasure Island on planes and between gigs and recordings sessions for various projects in their hometown of Brooklyn and overseas. Over the past year, while composing music and recording for Louis CK's show Louie on FX and working with artists as diverse as Reggie Watts and new music cello pioneer Maya Beiser, Matt always had his laptop in tow and was consistently sending tracks to Haleh. Between directing or editing music videos and darting off to cities as far as Assisi, Italy to recite her poetry, Haleh would write lyrics, record melodies, tweak arrangements, and send the tracks back to Matt. Through this volleying of ideas, Pleasure Island was born.
This process resulted in an inviting, lush collection of songs that soaks the mind in a bath of endorphins while propelling the body to dance. Opening track "Luxor" highlights Matt's infatuation with early UK drum 'n bass released on the Metalheadz imprint, detectable in the skittering beats under Haleh's winding vocal lines and velvety chants. On "So Right," a minimalist verse featuring a bell-like synth slowly builds, eventually bursting into a chorus that could easily be at home in a Deadmau5 or Hardwell set. "Cliff" follows with a wide-open booming 808 beat that drops into a crushing double-time chorus as Haleh's vocals soar.
The dance floor banger "Breathless We Go" follows, leading us into the mysterious cave of "Voices" which like many of the songs on the album features found sounds, in this case the swoosh of windsurfing as well as percussion samples Matt collected during his years of traveling. Continuing in this vein, the impressive beast of a song "Nuclear Dragon" features an African balafon deftly played by Matt and "Lean Into It" opens with a sample of Pygmy water drumming from the Congo.
In their live shows, where they have performed alongside Blonde Redhead, Reggie Watts, Teebs,Susanne Sundfør & more, Matt and Haleh incorporate live electronics, percussion, and vocal improvisation, preserving the spontaneity they cultivated as instrumentalists. Speaking on their live show, Haleh said "We know we've succeeded when our audience is sweating by the end of the show. When we see them jumping and moving, we know they've had a good time."

"With a voice that's an instrument all its own, Gautreau paints a serene picture of daydreaming through an overwhelmingly emotional and honest melting pot of guitar, piano and heart... creating an atmospheric and mystic experience that is both genuine and mesmerizing." - Magnet
"Lush, intricate, and sonically fascinating" - Consequence of Sound
Listen: "Haters" via CMJ or SoundCloud
CMJ has premiered "Haters" from the new Crushed Stars album, Farewell Young Lovers out January 21 on Simulacra Records. CMJ described the track by saying, "It's a fuzzy sleepwalking gem that'll bring to mind drops of dew on blades of grass and other similarly clichéd romantic moments, but it effortlessly avoids any sonic cliché." Farewell Young Lovers was recorded with Grammy winning producer Stuart Sikes (White Stripes, Modest Mouse, Cat Power) and once again most of the instruments were handled by Todd Gautreau who is joined by drummer Jeff Ryan (War on Drugs, Baptist Generals). Crushed Stars beautiful form of quiet indie pop features hints of Red House Painters, The Clientele, Lambchop and Low with previous efforts have receiving glowing reviews from prominent outlets such as Under The Radar, Pitchfork, Stereogum and many others.
Tracks on Farewell Young Lovers range from the effervescent opener "Flowerbomb" to the moody instrumental centerpiece "Poppies" to the Jesus and Mary Chain meets Stax "Haters" alongside several tracks of the dreamy psychedelia the band is known for. Other surprises include a guest theremin player on "Fly" and the first crushed stars guitar solo on "Supernova" with a second one superimposed for good measure.
Drummer Jeff Ryan says, "It seems there's a new sense of energy woven into these new tracks, there are more textures and electronics expanding the musical landscape. The straightforward harder songs like "Flowerbomb" and "Haters" show a musical side that hasn't been seen before from us, even though there's still a common thread between these songs and the others on the album."

"...a shape-shifting mess of psych-garage slime." -- SPIN
"It's got a fascinating kind of shimmering psychedelic aura, but if you strip away all the guitar fuzz and backwards echo, you'd still have a taut, catchy song that a much less trippy power-pop band could have a field day with." --Esquire

Typhoon Announces Nationwide US Tour
TYPHOON CONFIRMS NATIONWIDE TOUR DATES IN SUPPORT OF ACCLAIMED NEW ALBUM WHITE LIGHTERMTVU PREMIERES NEW VIDEO FOR "YOUNG FATHERS"APPEARANCES ON NPR'S "TINY DESK" AND "WORLD CAFÉ"
Typhoon will spend much of early 2014 on the road in support of their critically-acclaimed new album White Lighter , following up on their sold out Fall tour across North America. Kicking things off in January with a handful of dates around the Pacific Northwest, the 11-piece band (featuring strings, horns and two drummers - in addition to the more typical rock lineup) will spend the ensuing months headlining a nationwide tour that spans both coasts, with a stop along the way at SXSW. The band will showcase their "mercurial ability to range moments from quiet, introspective folk/pop songs into an all-out aural assault with distorted guitars, pounding drums, and powerful howls" at New York's Webster Hall, Los Angeles' El Rey Theatre, Washington DC's 9:30 Club and Chicago's Metro, among others.
MtvU recently premiered the new video for acclaimed single "Young Fathers," declaring "'Young Fathers' takes us on a woodsy guest complete with a spirit animal guide." Similarly, SPIN asserts the song is "a mind-boggling chunk of orchestral pop...this latest epic dives into the group's enormous range."
