Joan as Police Woman "The Classic"
JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN DETAILS RELEASE OF NEW ALBUM
WATCH "THE CLASSIC" NOW

WATCH:
The Classic , the much anticipated new album from the supremely talented JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN, will be released March 11th, 2014 on Play It Again Sam. "I'm in the best place I've ever been in my life," declares Joan Wasser, and she's just recorded the album that proves it. The Classic, the fourth album of originals by the uniquely charismatic artist known as Joan As Police Woman, builds on the creative impetus and success of its 2011 predecessor The Deep Field. As ever Joan strives to create music rooted in an intimate, elemental and uplifting brand of soul combined with her own unique serene, torch-singing temperament, this time with a more liberated feel than ever before.
The title track is the first song to be released from the new album and it includes a street-corner doo-wop bass vocal from fellow singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur and a human beat-box backing from none other than US comedian extraordinaire , which gives the track's classic 1950's/60's vibe a more contemporary slant. It is accompanied by a life-affirming video featuring some of the albums main contributors and was shot in the streets of New York last month.

Dais announces David First "Electronic Works 1976–1977" LP
DAIS RECORDS ANNOUNCES
DAVID FIRST
ELECTRONIC WORKS 1976-1977
OUT JANUARY 21ST
PRE-ORDERS UP
When people associate composer David First with his musical resume, anyone goes straight to his late 70′s avant punk band, The Notekillers and their influential 1980 single "The Zipper". Prior to his time in the basements of Philadelphia, he had already played in Cecil Taylor’s ensemble and after the Notekillers broke up he moved to New York City in the early 80′s, taking root in the downtown NYC avant garde scene. It was there that First honed his craft for experimental composition and ambient drone which still continues to the present day.
Though this narrative made sense, there was a piece missing in the puzzle of First’s musical background. In 1976, two years after playing with Taylor and the year before starting the Notekillers, he enrolled in a class in electronic music at Princeton in the department headed at the time by legendary electronic composer Milton Babbitt.
During his time at Princeton, First was introduced to the classical electronic music studio there, a lonely outpost of the famed Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center which housed one of the very first Buchla 100 series systems acquired by Vladimir Ussachevsky & Otto Luening.
Unfortunately, due to the introduction of digital technology within the music world, this system was left to languish in the studio unattended and nearly forgotten. First fell in love with this equipment and seized the opportunity to compose using the Buchla 100 synthesizer, at first experimenting only with electronic synthesis but later adding in his signature guitar stylings to make these compositions unique to the academic output typical of university music.
Thankfully, these compositions were recorded by First at Princeton on various reel to reel tapes and stored away for over 35 years. It wasn’t until the summer of 2012, when David First and Ryan Martin (of Dais Records) decided to revisit and transfer these reels to compile an album presented here as a selection of genuine, uninhibited exploration into modular electronic synthesis. Limited to an edition of 500 copies with liner notes by David First.

FREESTYLE: The Art of Rhyme DVD
FREESTYLE: The Art of Rhyme
10th Anniversary Special Limited Editionon DVD January 14th
The world of improvisational rap is explosively explored in this look at the best MC's to ever bless the mic...
Explosively documenting the story of a group of underground hip-hop MCs & DJs from the early 1980's to the present day,
FREESTYLE: The Art of Rhyme
is a film that explores the world of improvisational rap - the rarely recorded art form of rhyming spontaneously; off the top of the head. Made over the course of more than seven years, by a co-operative of filmmakers, b-boys, DJs, and MCs know as The Center for Hip-Hop Education,
FREESTYLE
takes the viewer on a journey through the previously unexamined dimensions of hip-hop as a spiritual and community based art form.
FREESTYLE: The Art of Rhyme features appearances by: Supernatural, Mos Def, Black Thought & ?uestlove of the Roots, Freestyle Fellowship, Lord Finesse, Cut Chemist, Craig G, Juice, Boots of the Coup, Medusa, Planet Asia, Sway, Crazy Legs, Jurassic-5, Wordsworth, Bobitto Garcia, and The Last Poets. The film offers a context in which to view living art as a social critique in story and rhyme that is designed to bring about a cathartic transformation of frustration into beauty. Following some of the best MCs ever to bless the mic, the film features legendary battles including those of the film's hero; Supernatural pitted against his arch nemesis Craig G providing the through line for the story. As these artists improvise poetry out of a mix of language, politics and culture that make up their lives, we discover revolutionary worlds where the English language is subverted and re-appropriated as a tool of economic and social empowerment.
FREESTYLE is critically acclaimed and the first of its kind in many respects. It is the first film to explore the social and cultural background that led to the current development of the street poet, or MC. It provides an inside look into the framework of hip-hop culture, its rules, taboos and social impact. It gives a voice to popular Black/urban culture, which is known to be a profound influence on youth culture globally. FREESTYLE is also the first independent film to counter false notions of hip-hop's erroneous negative and overly aggressive image, therefore providing a unique look at a growing influence in modern American and world culture.
FREESTYLE: The Art of Rhyme is directed by Kevin Fitzgerald, founder of Hip Hop for Health and a young and talented filmmaker on the rise. Holding great educational value for hip-hop enthusiasts as well as for those misinformed about hip-hop culture due to its intimate and honest portrayal of hard working independent artists, the film focuses on a group of intelligent, ambitious, and talented young men in pursuit of a dream, deconstructing the 'thug life' image that is often associated with the music.

THE BLACK ANGELS ANNOUNCE WINTER TOUR WITH ROKY ERICKSON
THE BLACK ANGELS ANNOUNCE WINTER TOUR WITH ROKY ERICKSONIN SUPPORT OF LATEST ALBUM INDIGO MEADOW
Blue Horizon is excited to announce that The Black Angels will head out on a winter tour in support of their latest record, Indigo Meadow. The tour begins on January 31st at Granada in Lawrence, KS and wraps up on March 1st at the Granada Theater in Dallas, TX. Throughout most of the dates, the Austin-based quintet will be joined by psychedelic rock legend Roky Erickson. Full tour dates are below. Recently, the band appeared on PBS's renowned Austin City Limits, performing songs from Indigo Meadow. Additionally, the album has already been included on early best of 2013 lists such as Rough Trade and Waterloo Records. Upon Indigo Meadow's release, iTunes selected the album as an Editors' Choice. The Associated Press said, "Imagine tossing bands from the pantheon of American psychedelia like The Electric Prunes, Count Five, 13th Floor Elevators and The Seeds into your blender, adding a splash of Sabbath and a dollop of early Soundgarden or Mudhoney, and you've got Austin's The Black Angels. On Indigo Meadow, these Texans keep this elixir swirling. Their fourth album is modern psychedelia, true to the earlier form, with all the weird, hypnotic, fuzzy guitar sounds and dirgelike keyboards, only really well produced." Relix hailed, "Hyperinventive when it counts, the Angels aren't just mimicking a late '60s garage sound - they're bending, stretching and molding it in their own image." The Black Angels' (Christian Bland - guitar, drone machine/organ; Alex Maas - vocals, bass, organ, drone machine; Stephanie Bailey - drums, percussion; Kyle Hunt - keyboards, percussion, bass, guitar; Jake Garcia - guitar, bass) most revelatory collection thus far, Indigo Meadow marks the Austin, Texas-based band's fourth full-length release, following 2010's acclaimed Phosphene Dream. Once again The Black Angels prove themselves the undisputed avatars of contemporary psychedelic rock, simultaneously exalting the genre's kaleidoscopic past as they thrust it ever further into the future. Davidge announces debut artist album and premieres title track, plus accompanying video trailer
Album: ‘Slo Light’Released: 2nd March 2014Label: 7Hz Recordings
‘Slo Light’ - the debut album by Davidge featuring Sandie Shaw, Cate Le Bon, Karima Francis, Stephonik Youth and more
‘Slo Light’ builds upon Neil Davidge’s seminal work as co-writer and producer of Massive Attack, score composer of Halo 4, plus his collaborations with David Bowie, Snoop Dog, Damon Albarn, Primal Scream and Mos Def.

7Hz Recordings / Shamrock Solutions Ltd. is proud to announce the stunning debut album byDavidge, AKA award-winning producer / musician Neil Davidge, renowned previously for his production, co-writing and sonic-sculpting of music for Massive Attack, David Bowie, Snoop Dog, Damon Albarn, Primal Scream, Elizabeth Fraser and Mos Def.
The album’s title-track ‘Slo Light’ launches the epic journey and clearly demonstrates Neil’s stamp on latter Massive Attack albums.
The video trailer was directed and shot by Gustavo Andrade for China Dolls Films and was co-directed and starred-in by singer and collaborator, Stephonik Youth (whose band Living Days are signed to Dave Sitek’s label Federal Prism).
An album deeply-schooled in Bristol beats, electronica, soundtracks, orchestral music and more, the‘Slo Light’ album creates a fantasy world in which tension, darkness and beauty find the perfect equilibrium. The record is sky-high on production value with an unparalleled clarity and sonic depth typical of Davidge’s unique style and sound.
Neil Davidge is a record producer, songwriter, film score composer, musician and occasional backing vocalist. Working in close collaboration with Massive’s Robert Del Naja (3D), he had a key hand in shaping the sound of the band’s third album, 1998’s Q Award-winning ‘Mezzanine’. As with ‘Mezzanine’, Massive Attack’s fourth album ‘100th Window’ was largely piloted by Davidge and Robert Del Naja. ‘Heligoland’ - the fifth studio album by Massive Attack, was co-produced by Davidge and 3D, with additional production by Tim Goldsworthy. Davidge co-wrote 8 tracks (and produced/mixed the airplay hit ‘Paradise Circus’) as well as playing keyboards, bass and guitar.
In 2004 he took the lead as score composer with Del Naja on the Luc Besson movie ‘Danny the Dog’, later renamed ‘Unleashed’ in the USA. This was followed by Davidge’s solo score for the Paul McGuigan directed ‘Push’, plus scores for ‘Bullet Boy’, ‘Battle In Seattle’ and ‘Trouble The Water’,which received an Oscar nomination for its score and won ‘Best Documentary’ at the ‘08 Sundance Film Festival.
Working with Snoop Dogg on the end title track, Neil scored the music for ‘In Prison My Whole Life’. He also provided additional music to the Warner Brothers blockbuster ‘Clash of the Titans’.
2012 saw the release of the Halo 4 OST, which Davidge composed, arranged and produced. The critically-acclaimed soundtrack went on to set the official record as the highest-charting video game soundtrack ever, having reached #50 in the Billboard Chart, #10 in the Independent Album Billboard chart and #3 the National Soundtrack Chart.
Following years of industry respect and renown, ‘Slo Light’ is primed to be the record that brings Davidge to the ears and minds of discerning music lovers, as a figure of talent and vision, who’ll appeal to fans of sound-exploring producer/artists like Brian Eno, Trent Reznor, Moby and William Orbit.
Designed by Stephen Kitchen, the ‘Slo Light’ album inner sleeves features geometric shapes that are individual aesthetic interpretations of each track, and the cover art is a phosphorescent design of a similar nature. The album will be released in the following formats:

The Triumphs and Tragedy of Gene Clark
http://foursunsproductions.com/Home/“How could a record this good, this gorgeous, this inspired exist for almost 20 years without you even having heard of it?”— Melody Maker (1995)“I really consider [No Other] a great album myself, I'm very proud of it. But I was very disappointed and let down after its release that it didn't go any further than it did—and I don't even know all the reasons.”—Gene ClarkGene Clark was a founding member of The Byrds, one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. After leaving The Byrds, he released numerous solo albums throughout the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, before his death in 1991. Though we generally love all of his music, we are most infatuated with his 1974 record, No Other. It feels like a special moment in Gene Clark's songwriting. At first, the overdone, studio nature of the album feels overbearing: the electric violin, the female chorus, the bass riffs, the layered guitar sequences. However, with more listens, Gene Clark's very unique lyrics, voice and spirit become the central focus. It's one of those records where each time you listen, you love a different song the most. Every song is nuanced and amazing in its own way.
When No Other was released in September of 1974, it received a lot of bad reviews, most criticizing its studio excess. There was also a general lack of support from the label as they saw the record as not having any “hits.” Ultimately, the album came to be seen as a critical and commercial failure. Therefore, a lot of people of its generation don't really know the record. Throughout the years since, many have dug the record up and fallen in love with it. We are certainly two of those people and we hope that the tour we are organizing to play the record live will spread awareness of the album even more. The show will consist of the entire record played, note for note, from start to finish. Gene Clark's lead parts will be sung by four singers that we admire very much: Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, Iain Matthews of Plainsong/Fairport Convention, and Hamilton Leithauser of The Walkmen. To be able to play each part on the album, we are assembling a ten-person band and chorus comprised of musicians we know in Baltimore, including members of Lower Dens, Wye Oak, Celebration, and Mt. Royal. We feel incredibly excited and lucky to be working with such a stellar group of singers, friends and musicians (listed below), without whose help, this complicated and unconventional tour would never be possible.A special edit of Four Sons Productions’ new documentary, The Byrd Who Flew Alone, focussing on No Other, will precede these performances, providing more insight into the story of the making of No Other.DJ BLT, aka Brad Truax (Soldiers of Fortune, Black Mountain, Spiritualized), will open the night with a set of No Other-related ‘70s music. Thanks for reading,

Filter Premieres Forest Fire's "Passengers" Video
Filter Premieres Forest Fire's "Passengers" Video New Album Screens Out Now On FatCat
"Forest Fire recall the coterie of bands who either worked with Dave Fridmann or took cues from his production tactics in the late 1990s and early '00s-- groups that created studio-intensive, computerized folk that interacted with electronics while still being wary of their effect on human nature." - Pitchfork "The upcoming LP Screens has been recorded with an outside engineer in a studio for the first time, making their washed-out sound more focused than ever before." - The Line Of Best Fit
"Expanding and refining on the best parts of Staring at the X
these songs have one foot in classic New York indie and the other in the synth-driven pop of the 2010s." - Allmusic Watch: "Passengers" via Filter or YouTube
Filter has premiered Forest Fire's new track "Passengers" from the band's new album Screens out now on FatCat. The video was The video was shot & directed by the Forest Fire's bassist/multi instrumentalist Galen Bremer. Forest Fire's Mark Thresher told Filter, "We received a bizarre invitation to the studio of Dutch painter Maurice Thomassen. On a deadline to film a music video, we brought a camera & this is the result." Forest Fire will be playing the Brooklyn Night Bazaar on December 6. The show is presented by FatCat, Insound and Kanine Records. More info can be found here. New York City's Forest Fire, led by vocalist/songwriter Mark Thresher, return this fall with Screens. With their third full-length, Forest Fire - now the quartet of Thresher, Natalie Stormann, Galen Bremer, and Robert Pounding - have found it.
"It" has been hinted at in previous releases - e.g. the howling languor of "Slow Motion", from the band's debut Survival (named one of Rough Trade Shops' top album of the year for 2010), or vitreous mid-tempo dejection ballad "The News" from 2011's FatCat issued Staring at the X ("You won't get far," Thresher sang, "with that look in your eyes") - but Screens is pure lightning.
After some lineup adjustments that left the band leaner and more centered, Forest Fire partnered with engineer Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, Dirty Beaches) possibilities they'd before only touched on, and to enable their new songs to breathe and stretch out.
That stretching out is quite literal in the case of album centerpiece "Annie," an eleven- minute track that is wide but not sprawling, buoyed by motorik lope and ornate synths, that the band acknowledges owes a debt to the late '70s output of not only Kraftwerk but Yoko Ono, Joy Division, Laurie Anderson, and their ilk; Sandy Skoglund's iconic 1977 photograph Pink Sink is the cover.
From its darker, sparser, sonic landscapes, obsession with analog instrumentation, and movement-focused, heavily metaphorical lyrics, Screens finds Forest Fire hewing to this mood. But for all the record's gratitude to the past, its aesthetic is just as much forward-looking, able to embrace the sunrise hooks of anthemic album opener "Waiting in the Night" and the Suicide-spooky synth-drone of "Cold Kind" as easily as "Alone with the Wires"'s jangly stride and Leonard Cohen-frosted vocal delivery.

Bibio Announces 'The Green EP' Out January 28, 2014

THE GREEN EP
JANUARY 28, 2014

Stream “Dye The Water Green” Here: https://soundcloud.com/bibio/dye-the-water-green/s-i5i8Q
Bibio, December 2013:"I wanted to do a follow up EP with ‘Dye The Water Green’ as it is my favourite track off Silver Wilkinson and I also have a lot of music in my archives that would complement the track well.
‘Dinghy’ is an old track I recorded with Richard Roberts (now one half of Letherette) around 2006. We used to work in an old Victorian pub back in those times, and it was a regular thing that we'd stay behind for a lock-in after hours. It became the norm that we'd take in our guitars before starting work in the evening and then jam together after we kicked all the customers out. Around that time we recorded a lot of stuff together, some in the pub, some in the garden, some by a stream in the woods, some at home. A lot of it was done in a super lo-fi fashion with very old cassette recorders and cheap mics. This track was recorded in one take, straight to cassette. It was a time where we played together so much that our sense of rhythm was totally locked, in this track we seemed to respond to each other's timing really naturally. I've always loved this track, it brings back strong memories and is a real daydream track for me. This EP seemed like the perfect home for it as it ties in so well with the murky vignetted sound of ‘Dye The Water Green.’
‘The Spinney View of Hinkley Point.’ is the first track I've released with live drums, as opposed to sampled and chopped on an MPC. I recorded the drums, guitar and bass parts in my friend's shed in rural Somerset (the same shed where the live trio session videos were filmed).
‘Carbon Wulf’ is of course a reprise of the album track 'Wulf'. This was just a straight, one-take improvisation on baritone guitar and a reverb pedal. I crushed the hell out of it with an analogue limiter which gave it this uneven fire-damaged sound.
The other tracks were written some years ago, I rediscovered them while going through my archives and, again, heard them with fresh ears. I decided to revamp them, re-recording the vocal parts and adding more instruments."
