Warhaus - We Fucked A Flame Into Being

Warhaus  - We F***ed A Flame Into BeingOut September 2, 2016 via Play It Again Sam / [PIAS]
LISTEN & SHARE: Warhaus  - "I'm Not Him" Warhaus is the artistic alter ego and solo recording project of Maarten Devoldere -- who (along with Jinte Deprez) fronts the urbanely soulful Belgian rock band Balthazar. Warhaus’ debut album We Fucked A Flame Into Being will be released on September 2nd, while the second single, "I'm Not Him," debuts June 23rd via Blackbook.

The title of Warhaus’ new album, We Fucked A Flame Into Being (a direct quote from Lady Chatterley's Lover by DH Lawrence), was "too good to pass on!” declares Devoldere. It is indeed a fitting title for an album where every song celebrates the inscrutability of encounters and pays tribute to the decadence and intensity that life can offer.

Although Maarten Devoldere has up until now kept his Warhaus persona well under the radar, the rare glimpses offered up to this point have conjured up a darkly esoteric lyrical universe, fueled by desire and love, haunted by a hunger for the fleeting, yearning to express the unsayable; We Fucked A Flame Into Being probes such depths savagely.

Illusion and disillusion may subtly interchange, but it is the lie that Warhaus most honors, sowing seeds of despair in an unstable world: "You want magic, count me in / You want Jesus, well I'm not him / You're an angel or a whore / Tell me who you're working for / Loving you isn't easy you know / But it's a motherfucker not to do so…" (“I'm Not Him”)

“I love contradictions,” asserts Devoldere. “They are musically very appealing to me: raw vs. fundamentally passionate, brutal vs. romantic, art vs. Kitsch, archaic vs. modern". The French sixties, a touch of exoticism, a careless apathy: Leonard Cohen and Serge Gainsbourg are never far away, as We Fucked A Flame Into Being cleverly coalesces fifty years of music history.

“I'm at the end of my twenties now. With this record I close an important period," avers Devoldere. “It’s an ode to love, to its excesses and elusiveness. Though love songs are a form of advertising: you portray a woman and the listener should fall in love with her too.”

Allah-Las in LA @ The Regent Theater on October 8; new album “Calico Review” out September 9 on Mexican Summer

ALLAH-LAS’ CALICO REVIEW OUT SEPTEMBER 9 ON MEXICAN SUMMER
DEBUT VIDEO FOR SINGLE “FAMOUS PHONE FIGURE”
NORTH AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN TOUR DATES CONFIRMED
[image error]Photo credit: Laura-Lynn Petrick   “The vintage sounds of Allah-Las combine the harmonies and hooks of the British
Invasion with the atmosphere of a West Coast psychedelic band.”—NPR’s “World Café
“They consistently deliver impressive performances; their harmonies, guitars,
and percussion are all point-perfect.”—Pitchfork
“Cramming as much guts and passion as possible into three and a half minutes or
less - while burning it’s own path, with brooding, lonesome songs, tightly restrained
surf inflected musings on girls and freedom”— The New Yorker
“Los Angeles garage-rock gurus Allah-Las tap into an alternate reality where the world
is but a California dream. Their crunchy, loose-groovin’ tunes evoke desert trips, motorcycle rides, surf safaris, and casual come-ons dished out by coiffed strangers.”—SPIN
Los Angeles-based Allah-Las will release their highly anticipated new album Calico Review  on September 9 via Mexican Summer. The album is now available for pre-order here: http://smarturl.it/CalicoxWebstore. Additionally, the band is debuting the video for their first single from the record “Famous Phone Figure,” directed by Robbie Simon.  View and share HERE. Using string instruments and an underlining of a three-note drumming theme, the song revolves around a character sketch of an unknowable woman.
The album was recorded in Los Angeles’ historic Valentine Recording Studio, which had lain dormant since 1979. The studio’s reopening in July 2015 allowed the band to use historic recording equipment including a 1964 Universal Audio 610 soundboard, the same board on which The Beach Boys recorded Pet Sounds. ForCalico Review, Allah-Las experiment with new instrumentation adding viola, harpsichord, Mellotron and theremin to their sound. The twelve tracks on Calico Review demonstrate how the group has pivoted from focusing on specific influences to crafting songs that reflect their own feelings of freedom, grit and melancholy. The result showcases their evolution as songwriters and arrangers.
Allah-Las is composed of Pedrum Siadatian (vocals/lead guitar), Miles Michaud(vocals/rhythm guitar), Matthew Correia (vocals/drum), and Spencer Dunham(vocals/bass). The band was formed in 2008 while three of the members were working at the legendary Amoeba Music record store. “We were all music fans before we were musicians,” says Correia. “We’ve spent a lot of time listening to music, and understanding what works for us and what doesn’t.” Their 2011 self-titled debut was nominated for independent album of the year by the A2IM Libbys. Of the debut, Pitchfork said, “it sounds like an effortlessly wistful batch of starry-eyed, minor-key beauties that gently ruminate on the usual young-guy subjects: sex, freedom, the ways the former can interfere with the latter and vice versa.”
In 2014, their sophomore LP  Worship The Sun  received critical acclaim from The Los Angeles Times who said the album “…lets the band’s trippy vintage rock absorb all sorts of new Southern California influences. Latin drumming, L.A.’s midcentury avant-garde beach culture and Laurel Canyon harmonies.” LA Weeklyhas noted, “their sound is steeped in the pop sensibilities of The Zombies and The Kinks, laced with Northern Soul, lo-fi funk and the ever-enduring influence of Arthur Lee and Love.”
The band has toured extensively with sold out tours and high profile festival dates throughout North, Central, and South America, Europe, South Africa, Russia, Mexico and Israel. For the upcoming North American dates will have the group, TOPS, supporting in September and October. See below for full tour dates.

Sara Watkins' new LP, 'Young In All The Wrong Ways,' Streaming Now at NPR First Listen

SARA WATKINS ANTICIPATED SOLO ALBUM, YOUNG IN ALL THE WRONG WAYS PREMIERING IN FULL VIA NPR FIRST LISTEN  BROOKLYN SHOW TOMORROW NIGHT FOLLOWED BYHOLLYWOOD BOWL, EXTENSIVE TOURING NOMINATED FOR INSTRUMENTALIST OF THE YEAR BY AMERICANA MUSIC ASSOCIATION

LOS ANGELES, CA, June 27, 2016 - Ahead of its release this Friday, July 1 onNew West Records, Sara Watkins much anticipated new solo album,  Young in All The Wrong Ways , is premiering in full all week long at  NPR First Listen . "By now, Watkins has been in the spotlight for half her life. Never before has she made her voice heard quite this clearly," they exclaimed. "The title track opens the album and sets the tone. Watkins momentarily loses herself in lulling wistfulness, only to lurch into a rebuke of naïveté, bearing down on her scorn for once-automatic acquiescence over spiky eruptions of electric guitar and a tumultuous drum groove. 'I'm going out to see about my own frontier,' she insists twice in a row, sounding determinedly detached. Watkins isn't acting out belated rebellion so much as disrupting comfortable certainty and fleshing out an adult, feminine vantage point - one that chooses which attachments to cultivate." Listen here:  http://www.npr.org/2016/06/23/482326186/first-listen-sara-watkins-young-in-all-the-wrong-ways
Watkins, who is currently nominated for Instrumentalist of the Year by theAmericana Music Association for their upcoming awards show, recently shared the beautifully shot video for the powerful title track via Wall Street Journal Speakeasy, the cinematic clip directed by Emilie Sabath, was shot in the desert and mountains of Southern California and mirrors the intense, personal nature of the lyrics. As the WSJ expressed, the "musician surrounded herself with yucca plants, tall mountains, and a quaint cabin outside of Palmdale, Calif. But it's her intense gaze into the camera that takes center stage." Watch the video below:
Sara Watkins - Sara Watkins - "Young In All The Wrong Ways" (Official Video)Following two riveting performances at Bonnaroo and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, this past weekend Watkins performed at the Kennedy Center inWashington, D.C. with I'm With Her, her trio with Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan, for the American Acoustic series curated by Chris Thile.Tomorrow, June 28, Watkins will perform at Rough Trade in Brooklyn before heading home to Los Angeles to take part in Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" farewell show at the Hollywood Bowl followed by a hometown record release show Thursday, July 7 at Largo at the Coronet. An expansive tour that will take her from coast to coast will take place in the fall. See dates below with more to come.
Young In All The Wrong Ways sees the acclaimed songwriter and multi-instrumentalist boldly stepping back in to the role of frontwoman following the collaborative groups of Watkins Family Hour and the Platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning Nickel Creek, which she first formed with her brother Sean Watkins and Chris Thile when she was just eight years old. Easily her most cohesive and fully realized album of her solo career, it is also her most introspective, personal and revealing; she wrote or co-wrote each of the 10 songs - a first for her. Writing and recording these ten intensely soul-baring songs was a means for her to process and mark the last couple years, which have been transformative. These songs contain some of the heaviest moments of her career, with eruptions of thrumming B3 organ and jagged electric guitar. But it's also quiet, vulnerable, tenderhearted.  The album was produced in Los Angeles by Gabe Witcher who put together a stellar band that included two of his fellow Punch Brothers, guitarist Chris Eldridge and bass player Paul Kowert, and musicians Jon Brion and Jay Bellerose. Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan, Watkins' bandmates in I'm With Her, provide harmonies on the title track while Jim James of My Morning Jacket guests on "One Last Time."  SARA WATKINS ON TOURJune 28 - Brooklyn, NY @ Rough TradeJuly 1 - Los Angeles, CA @ Hollywood Bowl - "A Prairie Home Companion"July 7 - Los Angeles, CA @ Largo at the CoronetJuly 13 - Vail, CO @ Vail Summer Bluegrass SeriesJuly 14 - Boulder, CO @ eTown HallJuly 16 - Oak Hill, NY @ Grey Fox Bluegrass FestivalAugust 13 - Alta, WY @ Targhee Bluegrass FestivalSeptember 3 - Pagosa Springs, CO @ Four Corners Folk FestivalSeptember 9 - Pasadena, CA @ Levitt Pavilion @ Memorial ParkSeptember 10 - Santa Barbara, CA @ Lobero TheatreSeptember 14 - San Francisco, CA @ The ChapelSeptember 16 - Portland, OR @ Aladdin TheatreSeptember 17 - Seattle, WA @ The TractorSeptember 20 - Minneapolis, MN @ Dakota Jazz ClubSeptember 21 - Chicago, IL @ Old Town School Of Folk MusicSeptember 24 - Atlanta, GA @ City WinerySeptember 25 - Asheville, NC @ The Grey EagleSeptember 27 - Annapolis, MD @ Rams Head On StageSeptember 28 - Philadelphia, PA @ World Cafe LiveSeptember 20 - Pawling, NY @ Daryl's HouseOctober 1 - Allston, MA @ Brighton Music HallOctober 2 - Portland, ME @ One Longfellow SquareOctober 3 - Northampton, MA @ Iron Horse Music HallOctober 5 - New York, NY @ Bowery BallroomOctober 6 - Washington, DC @ The HamiltonOctober 7 - Roseland, VA @ The FestyOctober 9 - Peninsula, OH @ The G.A.R. HOOPS Announce Debut EP + Share "Cool 2" via Gorilla vs. Bear

HOOPS ANNOUNCE DEBUT EP +SHARE FIRST SINGLE "COOL 2" VIA GORILLA VS. BEARHoops EP out August 26th via Fat Possum(Credit: Daniel Topete)Early praise for Hoops: "undeniably infectious and charming tapes" - Gorilla vs. Bear      '...an aural capsule of summer; it's built on speedy, luminous guitar work and some murky melodies - the latter a little bit reminiscent of Real Estate's groggy earliest output." - The FADER          "There is a romanticism in every song that harvests elements of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Mac DeMarco, and Real Estate with pitched guitars and earnest feel." - My Old Kentucky Blog            "Striking a blend of beautiful, dreamy tones, Hoops inhabit a space between DIIV's guitar weaving, Ariel Pink's surf-pop weirdness and Real Estate's earlier works - all combined, they build towards a canvas of glorious propulsive swells of sun-soaked sonics." - The Line of Best Fit          "The music - a shimmering and playful mix incorporating the best bits of acts like Felt and Ariel Pink - instantly stood out to me, sounding about as lo-fi as you can get but mightily ambitious, and with super strong melodies all over the place...The best thing about it is how it all builds, with those lilting, gorgeous melodies piled high..." - NME   Bloomington, Indiana four-piece Hoops recently signed to Fat Possum, and today they announce the release of their debut EP. The self-titled EP - which Hoops self-recorded, produced and mixed - will be out on August 26th. PRESS HERE to listen to the opening track and first single "Cool 2" - an infectious tune packed with lo-fi vocals and jangly guitars, clocking in at under 2 minutes - now viaGorilla vs. Bear. "Cool 2" will be available as an instant grat with all pre-orders starting tomorrow.PRESS HERE to pre-order on CD or vinyl (including limited edition coke clear vinyl) now, and HERE to pre-order digitally tomorrow.
Hoops just wrapped a support tour with Whitney, and are hitting the road again starting today for a string of shows which includes opening for Porches at a Pitchfork Festival Aftershow in Chicago next month. See below to find a show near you and PRESS HERE to purchase tickets.
What began as frontman Drew Auscherman's solo ambient project, Hoops ultimately became a quartet in 2014. Named for hoop houses in the greenhouses which Auscherman used to work in high school, Hoops draw on influences from Prefab Sprout and The Clientele, and recall the idea of breezy afternoons and sticky summer nights in both name and sound. The fuzzy, summer-ready Hoops EP follows the band's first releases, Tapes #1-3, which earned Hoops early praise from The FADER, Gorilla vs. Bear, NME, My Old Kentucky Blog, Gold Flake Paint, and more.
Hoops is: Drew Auscherman (vox, guitar), Kevin Krauter (vox, bass), Keagan Beresford (vox, keys, guitar), and James Harris (drums)

MODDI Uncovers Kate Bush's 'Army Dreamers'

MODDI UNCOVERS KATE BUSH’S ‘ARMY DREAMERS’
TAKEN FROM ‘UNSONGS’ LP – OUT SEPT 16 – 12 BANNED SONGS FROM 12 COUNTRIES

“Unsongs, a brave and bold album where he covers Pussy Riot, Billie Holiday
and executed Chilean folk singer Victor Jara... Moddi repairs a broken link
between art and politics, refusing to allow those in power to threaten or
control what is allowed to be expressed in song.”
– The Line Of Best Fit

“Informed by a political entanglement of his own, Norwegian artist Moddi is releasing
a concept album of songs that have fallen foul of the censor.” – Q Magazine

“What causes a song to be banned? Norwegian musician Pål Moddi Knutsen
decided to find out… 12 banned songs, one album.” – BBC World Service

“Pure protest poetry” – BBC Radio 6 Music, Cerys Matthews Recommends

“Truly stunning” – Nothing But Hope and Passion

“What a waste of Army Dreamers” – it’s an anti-war sentiment that was openly echoed through BBC playlists before its systematic suppression more than 10 years after release. Penned by Kate Bush in 1980, the Top 20 single was blacklisted during the Gulf War in 1991 – joining a list of 67 songs simultaneously banned from BBC airplay, including The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, ABBA and Queen.

It’s the latest track reworked by Norwegian singer/songwriter Moddi, from forthcoming album  ‘Unsongs’  – released Friday, September 16 via Propeller Recordings. The album aims to uncover a collection of 12 songs that have, at one stage or another, been banned or suppressed, with the attempts to silence them as mild as an airplay ban (in the case of ‘Army Dreamers’) and as brutal as a murder. >> Stream/embed Moddi’s take on ‘Army Dreamers’ below...

“Army Dreamers became one of Kate Bush’s most popular songs and was widely played on radio and TV until the First Gulf War in 1991, when it suddenly disappeared from all BBC playlists” Moddi explains. Despite online records and a full list published by New Statesman and Society, in conjunction with Channel 4 [1991], “the BBC has had an absolute no-comment policy on this issue,” he says. “It has been impossible for me to verify that it has even been removed from radio airplay.”
